We should just do what every other European country does and just ignore the ban!

I love his pictures, but maybe he should stick to painting them. I saw him being interviewed and repudiating the consequences of passive smoking, probably missing the point that aside from that, lots of people go out and dont want to be turned into other peoples ash trays!

why not have a smoke room like the pubs had in the past

The UK is not blessed with the weather our European counterparts. This is part of the problem.

I think the country should have been given the option to vote on the ban and then if the country wants it, the government has the right to impose it. If memory serves, the Labour manifesto for the last election made no mention of a smoking ban. Voters had no idea this was coming and where powerless to oppose it.

Just another way this government cares little for the electorate’s opinion.

I would be happy with just requiring "smoking allowed" establishments to display some kind of standardised notice at entry points, so people could simply choose for themselves whether they wanted to take the risk and patronise the business.

Bans in public buildings make sense, because we often don't have a choice but to enter.

I think they should bring it back, but I think the people (smokers in particular) of this country let us down. I got barred from a few pubs for lighting up, I never returned and a couple of them went bust. Sod them.

I also think irreversible damage has been done. Some people have a nice routine of alternating their houses as venues for parties. And the illegal drugs tend to be permitted. Why bother going back to the massively overpriced pub scene (smoking permitted) where you had to nip out for a joint, when you can do it at home for cheaper...

To be honest, Ive less of a problem with that, then at least people have the choice, if the pub can accommodate it, certainly better than having to stand on street corners puffing away and the non smokers dont have to endure the direct contact with smoke.

Ps, although it might still be hard on non smoking pub staff?

The anti-smoking brigade always knew that they were onto a winner....the smoking ban in pubs was their greatest coup and at the same time the biggest insult to their fellow compatriots.
If any one thinks that ASH will stop with this ban ...not a chance...and they will call for tobacco to be made illegal......
Someone has suggested that we ignore the ban like the rest of Europe....then do it....the coppers cannot be everywhere at once, and if you are unlucky to have your pub raided then you all club together and pay the landlords fine....after all how could one landlord evict 50 smokers...so no charges could be laid against him come to think.
Can you imagine the pressure on the Courts dealing with 300 people per day ..every day charged with smoking in the pubs...the judicial system would collapse.....

They have. It is called the outside shelter.

As an overrider ...we could have smoking and non-smoking pubs and restaurants.....the staff would then have a choice as to where they would like to work.....

One of the reasons cannabis is de facto legal.

omeone has suggested that we ignore the ban like the rest of Europe....then do it....the coppers cannot be everywhere at once, and if you are unlucky to have your pub raided then you all club together and pay the landlords fine.
And what happens when the landlord loses their licence/livelihood? Are you going to all club together to support them then?
...after all how could one landlord evict 50 smokers...so no charges could be laid against him come to think.
If you where a landlord and faced losing your livelihood because people wouldn't stop smoking in your pub you'd call the police to get rid of them just like anyone else in that situation.

Wasn't cannabis upgraded from Class C to B only recently?

The man's an idiot. We should extend the smoking ban not reverse it.

All the Great Men of recent history have been smokers-----Churchill, W.C. Fields, Stalin, Chairman Mao, Humphrey Bogart, Genghis Khan, Albert Modley, Mae West [ oops ! ], Oscar Wilde & Marlene Dietrich [ oops again ! ]......and many others......
Only that arch-villain, old Adolf, never allowed the fatal weed to be placed between his rosy lips. He didn 't like meat, alcohol or hunting either.....but he still handed in his dinner-plate at the age of 56. Such a wasted life ! Such missed opportunities !
So, let 's all light up with joy and glee ! Let 's all sing the ' Smokers' Anthem '

------If you 're feeling wan and sad,
Get a match & light a fag,
And if you don 't live to reach a ton,
At least, you 've had a bit of fun !

Pubs should drill loads of holes in the walls with little tubes in.! You light your fag, put it in the tube, post the tube through the hole until the cigs outside ,exhale through another tube straight outside, bingo problem solved!

Yes and it increased somewhat in price. It remains de facto legal and is still available at a school/pub/shopping precinct near you.

By the way ..............I am a non-smoker....but I believe in the choice of the individual.

As do I. As an individual with asthma, I choose to not smoke and not be around cigarette smoke. Since the smoking ban came in, my asthma has eased considerably. Had I realised the effect 1 or 2 nights a week was having on my chest I wouldn't have gone at all. So under the choice of the individual, I don't think smoking should be outlawed, but I do think the current ban is completely adequate.
