View Full Version : Best PS2 racing game?
Fellow Sheffielders
I'm getting bored of GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas doesn't have a difficulty curve as much as a difficulty wall.
I fancy playing a driving simulator. What do you all recommend for the PS2?
For the record, I thought Gadget Racers was tough.
Gran Turismo 4 is highly rated, and it's on sale for just £20 at Argos.
I'm looking for something that has a wide range of vehicles, tracks and allows me to get behind the wheel of a sports car of my choosing and thrash it round a track without having to win dozens of competitions first.
Many thanks
JFKvsNixon 26-07-2005, 16:12 Hi there Abdul,
I would go for Gran Turismo 4, I love it. It is a massive and addictive game, for £20 you can't go wrong
Thanks for that.
Do I have to win loads of competitions in order to unlock a fast car, or can I choose which one I want to drive?
I have read that all the cars in the game look, sound and handle as they do in real life, so I'm really looking forward to thrashing a Ferrari 360 round the Nurburgring on the cheap
Ghosthunter 26-07-2005, 18:21 Going back to GTA:San Andreas.....
....has anyone got past the Supplies Lines mission......the one where your flying the radio controls plane?
I just cannot do it for the life of me!!!
If you want good racing games, bin the PS2 and get an Xbox and copies of Forza Motorsport and Project Gotham Racing 1 and 2.
They're all highly acclaimed Xbox exclusive race 'em ups, which you can't go wrong with.
Not to mention online racing with Forza and PGR 2 over Xbox Live, the best online gaming service EVER!
No thanks, Rich. I'd like to stick with my PS2.
Argos are also selling Burnout 3 Takedown and Need for Speed Underground 2 for £20 each.
What do you think of those?
Edit - not to be outdone, Toys R us are selling the following:
WRC 2 Extreme Platinum £10
World Rally Championship 04 £15
Driver 3 £20
Midnight Club II Platinum £20
though I'm not too keen on the rallying games...
Toca 2: Race Driver is only £10 from play.com and it is absolutley fantastic. Google for Toca 2 review if you don't believe me.
Burnout 3 is cool, Takedown is ok, but need for speed i think is pants...
Look for toca games... there cool...
the fun a 35 year old man can have while playing with his...:hihi: sons ps2. (who got what for xmas?):heyhey:
Thanks for your responses, guys and gals (well, guys only probably :D )
I'll take a look at the TOCA games.
In the meantime, I've purchased Gran Turismo 4 for £18 from play.com (Argos were selling it at £30 not £20 as I first thought. They put the GT4 box next to a Need for Speed label  )
Gran Tourismo is very good, but not very realistic, you can hit a wall at 150 mph and just bounce off.
Burnout is great fun too : http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/driving/burnout/index.html

True, but I'm buying it for the varied cars and tracks rather than how accurately it punishes my mistakes ;)

Yes, I played one of the Burnout series many months ago; I liked that the whole purpose of the game was to smash your opponents off the road - very therapeutic :D
I'll buy it when the price drops to a tenner
I recently bought Gran Tourismo 4, just for the Nurburgring old circuit. ( Indubitably the best thing Hitler ever dreamt up!)
I have managed 8 mins 23 seconds, almost one minute faster than I can do it in real life. Hopefully it will help when we return in September (that's my excuse anyway).
Depends what kind of racing game you want...
Personally I would recommend Burnout 3: Takedown as I went out and bought it after watching you lot play it in the office (you did really well I seem to remember Abdul!) and it's a class game... great fun ramming opponents into stuff and seeing them fly into the air in slow motion
GT4 is meant to be a really good racing game, but I've never really liked the GT series - not really my thing.
Should be fun on your new Ferrari steering wheel though. I used to have a wheel and pedels for my PS1 (for playing F1 games mostly) and it's great fun - although a little hard to get used to at first.
Oh, and Burnout 3: Takedown is now available from Play.com for £16.99
