This isnt for me, my two are spayed thank goodness but a friends bitch had an accidental mating on Friday on the 18th day of her season, the dogs were tied for 20 mins . She has had conflicting opinions re the injection and doesnt know who to take advice from, two Vets have said different things . The trouble is that her bitch had a litter at her last season and so my friend is worried about the effects of two close litters . She is in turmoil, she knows its her fault but wants to do the right thing , has anyone here had the injection for their bitch and were they alright afterwards please ?

Both people I know who had this for their bitches still ended up with a litter of puppies, so I'd say that the 'success' rate for this injection is not that high!

Why not just get her spayed in a couple of weeks? The injection isn't fool proof and is expensive anyway. Done at the right time after mating it is quite effective though. Usually a bitch will only mate around the 10th - 11th day of season, which is " the time " to mate. How can she have been accidentally mated with for 20 mins? Getting her spayed would stop any more accidental matings, there's far too many unwanted animals as it is.

Hey , dont shoot the messenger, its not my dog !! As I said, my dogs are both spayed to prevent unwanted pups . I was purely posing the question for someone who doesnt have internet , I have no idea how the accidental mating took place, just wanted opinions on the injection and how effective it it so that I can pass comments on .

Sorry Cornishmaid I don't know about the injection as I never had to use it.
I just wanted to say though that accidents do sometimes happen to the best of us, and the dogs will have mated for 20 mins because once they tie you cannot split them without causing damage to one or both dogs, and it takes quite a long time for them to be able to break free of each other.

Not having a go, sorry if you felt that I was.. The injection is called missaliance? think that's how it's spelt. It is effective if done in time. What I was trying to say is that it is expensive and if they don't want her to have more pups then spaying is the only way. Sometimes people think that the op costs a lot of money, but if they have to have this injection on a couple of occasions they would have paid the cost of the spay.

Just spoken to my friend again and aparantly, she left her girl in the garden and went to answer the phone and when she came back out, next doors dog had jumped the fence and they were already tied . I do feel sorry for her because she had intended to spay after this season and it was just one of those accidents that happen , she says now that she was stupid to not think that a dog would jump over a four foot high fence !! Sorry ,I didnt mean to have a go berlingo, unwanted pups is a subject I feel everso strongly about and working for The Blue Cross, as I do , its a constant and very sad problem .

If she was going to spay after this season anyway then I think an abort spay may well meet the needs better than the injection. I know it's a bigger operation, but at least that way you're sure that you've not got puppies on the way and if the dog is going to have to go through the operation anyway then it's definitely worth considering.

Thank you, I`ll pass the comments on to her , I tend to agree that an abort spay would be the best path to take as she was going to spay anyway , thanks

I had a fabulas Airedale terrier have this injection after mismating and afterwards when mated she never got pregnant, I dont think its a good idea if its a valuable pedigree.

We had to have this injection once to one of our collies...(we were told she was spayed and 1 month later she was very obviously not) The injection did not work. We were not offered abortive spay as an option. We ended up with 2 still born puppies and one tiny deaf female. (now 9 years old)

On the other hand I know of people who have had their dog injected and it has worked sucessfully.

I did not know about the abortive spay but I think that this sounds the better option.

I had a collie injected some 10 years ago after my GSD broke a door down to get to her while we were out (he actually broke the bolt off the door) - we assumed he had got to her, but was never actually sure. She ended up with pyrometria and had to have an emergency spay, which almost cost her her life. The vet did say after all this that the injection could have brought this on! Check with the vet all side effects of the drug - I may have let her have the pups if I had known this - I nearly lost my dog!!

I've only ever heard bad things about the injection, including deformed puppies as a result
