The OP means DERREN Brown, on Channel Four. I can understand you being a bit lost though, as it has nothing to do with Sheffield.

Oh right...something on the goggle box then. Let me guess, viewers were supposed to be glued to their seat by magic and a load of people were so keen to believe that they decided not to stand up and then claimed to be immobilised.

Am I anywhere near the mark here?

if anyone has recoreded the show, upload it onto your pc and change the visual settings, colour, brightness, night vision etc to see if there was any text written between the twirling lines.

it was a great suggestion technique, one used a lot in guided meditations to get into a relaxed stated. He began the suggestion way before the film started, laying down feelings of being stuck and heavy and relaxed. The video was just to reaffirm to you that you were being put in that state, he had already begun the process before hand.

In order to succumb to the suggestion you had to be open to it in the first place and wanting it to work.

Did anyone else see the subliminal pictures during the entire show? I kept seeing flashes of pictures of a person in a seat. I recorded it onto dvd and played it back again and again, and they are definitely there. I didn't get stuck, even after replaying it whilst sat closer to the tv though...

Even though several times he says there are no hidden subliminal messages, they ARE there! If you've taped it, watch it again, and notice the flashes of images as I described. They don't even last a second, but I see them clear as day....

Yeh I saw these and just though "nice try!". I think this technique will only effect a minority of people. The show was called "how to control the nation", and I am aware of similar techniques being used by advertisers, but I suppose to many of us it's so blatant that our minds don't allow it to seep into our subconscious.

Unless of course, we were only expecting it because it's Derren Brown, and the context of the show was transparent enough for our minds to adjust accordingly...

The 'subliminal' images were a bit naff, surely you're not supposed to be able to see them? The ones of the person roped into a chair were a bit obvious, don't we think? Didn't work on me anyhow!

I wonder how many people will ring in to work tomorrowSaturday claiming to have missed the blue screen and still be stuck to their chair? :D :hihi:

So what were the random pictures of someone in a chair supposed to do?

It didn't work to me or my friend, and we watched it on sky plus 4 times after that.
Was sooo naff.

I think a lot of people watched the lottery show thinking he actually was going to predict them. When they realised they had been tricked, they were embarrassed. Some people got quite angry even on SF.

It's entertainment, showmanship, nothing more.

It said right at the beginning that there were going to be subliminal messages played in the programme.

At the end of the day, he has done what he has set out to do... got everyone talking about him - even people who would never normally watch his rubbish on tv have watched it.

PWA does really exist and can work but only if your genuinely open and suggestible an I think you've gotta be pretty open minded for any of this to work. The flurry of angry posters at the beginning maybe from those that convince themselves that they're open minded but when it comes to the truth, they actually not.

Is the idea that the people this worked on are supposed to be more susceptible to suggestion than those that it didn't effect?

It works in exactly the same way as a stage hypnotist when they have people running around acting like they're a cat or something.

People that wanted it to work made it work.

Also did anyone notice right before he showed the film how much he was trying to get you all to want to do it.

He kept on saying stuff like 'this will only work on the most intelligent and creative of you' and 'if you've got the talent, this will work' etc.

I was far too aware of all of this, scrutinised him far too much, it had no effect on me or any of the friends I was with.

Rather dissapointing actually, I was hoping it would work to restore my faith in my former hero, I still haven't forgiven him for that lottery nonsense. Having said that, I'm sure I'll still watch his next TV appearance, it's interesting none the less.

But I don't think those were sumbliminal messages, they were more likely a type of misdirection making people think that those images of the person in chair were somehow part of the technique, when perhaps they had nothing to do with the procedure at all.

Still If Derren managed to get people falsely believing that those images were part of the process then his job has been done.

Like I said im my post above, In my view those images weren't the subliminal messages.
I think most people, not just you noticed them, subliminal messages wouldn't be as obvious, but it's was part of the programme to make you believe those images had something to do with the experiment, when they were probably just put in as Derren Brown quirk to make you think you have spotted something.

Liked the giraffe trick and the homeless beggar scam was good as well. The stick to chair bit is a familiar hypnosis technique. Also done with eyes sticking closed by sufggestion alone. Workson some but not all. It's used as a "convincer".

It worked on me, I could not get up at all, kept saying to myself '3-2-1 Get up' but nothing happened.
I was getting wierd dull pain down my arms. After a minute I asked my wife to touch my arm and I immediately got up.
I never believed it would work but really enjoyed the experience :)
