Last friday I was switched onto a high speed broadband account with Bulldog (took three months but got there in the end!! :-) ) all is well and I'm having great fun running around the internet at 500mph, I'm using firefox and thunderbird which are both great, I've sorted out my firewall and anti spyware stuff, I'm using a proxy server and feel fairly secure and happy within the confines of my PC world.

The only problem I'm having now is that I cant seem to update any of my existing software such as Windows Udate, Spybot, my games or my firewall. Also I cant log onto my music store via itunes or indeed use internet with Windows Media Player. Firefox is my default server although it look like at least some of these programme are trying to use IE, If anyone's got any clues to my problem I apprieciate the help.

Big thanks.

id recommend going proxyless and test that, or try disabling firewalls you may have enabled (for the time being!) just to test....

Big thanks. Yeh, I sence you're going to have fun with NAt and port forwarding... Or get rid of the Proxy and of your problems.

PS: Windows Media Player is for playing media, not to browse Tinternet ;)

He wants streaming video perhaps??

Sounds like a firewall issue... If you can browse the web then you're allowed to use either the application (firefox) or the port (80). I can't believe you have NAT that is blocking any specific useage, they usually allow any outbound connection, and port forwarding is for incoming stuff. My guess would be that you haven't "sorted out" your firewall as well as you think you have ;) Which firewall are you using?

Why are you using a proxy server?? It could conceivably be related to that, but for most people it's not worth using. It can certainly be disabled for testing, although if you must disable the firewall too, do it as quickly as you can, and make absolutely sure you're up to date with windows updates!

I tried disabling my firewall (Sygate) that didn't work, over the weekend I also tried using Bullguard and then Panda.

Rich951: I took a look at my fire wall setting and I cant see any obvious signs as to why I cant access Windows Updates or whay I cant go onto the itunes music store.

Tried disabling the proxy server, no luck.

Any other ideas??

It looks as though anything trying to use IE cannot do so. I've tried switching off Mozilla and having IE as my default browser. When I do this I cant access any web pages at all. I get the 'Page cannot be displayed' screen and at the top of the browser page it says 'Invalid Syntax error'.

When I switch back to Mozilla all works well again.

So it's a weird IE error... Have you done a recent spyware scan? Some of those can sometimes mess up IE. Failing that, try doing a repair/reinstall of IE perhaps.

I assume there's no weird IE settings like it's trying to dial up through a modem when you ask it to retrieve a web page?

How did you disable Sygate trentboy?
If you just turn it off in the user control panel it will still have part of the program running in the background. I had to remove it from the startup list in msconfig and re-boot.
Are you sure you have configured the firewall properly too?

I think I may have found the culprit, looks as though my computer is loaded with a worm called win32.Tibick.A my anti virus software didn't pick it up for some reason now I'm using 'ewido' hopefully it'll get rid of the worm and get my computer back to normal....hopefully
