Maroon Salloon style car at the bottom of cleveland street, has had all the petrol syphoned out of its tank (by the looks of things) , a little of the chassis is on the floor and the windows are smashed in

I have the number plate but I doubt posting it up here will solve much.

What should I do about this?

Dont really fancy having to put up with a smouldering mess in the next couple of days

If it's untaxed the council may be able to help:

Definitely use the link above first. We had twenty abandoned cars in Tinsley around the streets and they have all been cleared over two months. Well done Streetforce . Pass on any registration details and car tax details as they can find the owners.

If the car is taxed they say they cant touch it. If it is untaxed they will ask you to contact the DVLA directly via phone or by their website.

The Council will tell you if the vehicle has a SORN declaration and some of ours were still being driven about, but that has been stopped.

As part of the local Neighbourhood Watch we are going to go around every three months now to keep the streets clear.

You always get someone asking what you are doing so be prepared.:suspect:

Carl_Malibu - correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you the chap who seems to defend the actions of 'graffiti artists', the ones who have had a right good go not far from you, up on Commonside?

And you seem to be implying that you want this ugly wreck of a vehicle removed from near your home. Why? Is it unsightly? Does it make the place look a mess? Bring the tone of the area down a little?

Sigh indeed: Love the world we live in.

Are you sure it's a not a red scooby, that's been abandoned by the owner, who has gone on the run from their internet stalker, crunchie? :suspect:

Carl_Malibu asked what to do about an abandoned car. If folk want to take up the issue of graffiti - please look up the Great Sheffield Graffiti debate thread - and see my posting with an announcement of a recent council initiative.

Hence the opening line: Correct me if I'm wrong. (I did have another look at your comments prior to posting.)

Not to me there isn't. Pray, kindly explain. Your graffiti garbage on the walls of my business premises or a burnt out wreck sat outside?

Two complete messes with little to distinguish between them.

I'd prefer neither, in a decent world. Just as you'd not like my vomit on your shirt, I take offence at someone's 'art' (laugh my arse off) daubed all over my shop front.

i say again, there is a difference between a burnt out wreck and some paint, and i hope some people can see this to,a burnt out wreck is something purely done to **** people off, graffiti is done to try and brighten up a place.a burnt out wreck takes ages to clear up,paint takes abit of paint thinner and scrubbing

So at least you acknowledge that the grafitti is put there on the assumption that it's going to get cleaned away? Albeit at the expense, time and effort of the peron whose premises have been defaced. Very charitable.

Frankly, I get more f***ed off at the grafitti on my shop front than I would if someone had dumped a burnt-out shell of a car nearby.

Still, no doubt some tosser will be planning on the latter sooner or later.

I'm with you Ousetunes. It sickens me to see how much time (and presumably money) the council spends cleaning up after other people whether it's fly posters in subways, rubbish dropped on the streets, fly tipping or dumping cars. I am one of the law abiding citizens who try to make sure they tax and MOT their cars on time but I drive and walk past the same cars every day around sharrow and nether edge with no tax, flat tyres, smashed windows quite clearly not someone's daily transport. Take them and crush them! there's a shortage of parking near where I work, get rid of some of the dumped cars and make more space for the rest of us. And maybe a few ASBO's for the chavs and hoodies who stand next to a bin and still manage to drop their fag packets/McD wrappers on the floor.

The thing is THCAyle, all of these things (be it burnt out cars, graffiti, smashed windows, litter) influence the general perception of a place. Conciously or subconciously, we take in the details of our surroundings and it makes us feel good/bad, safe/unsafe etc.

I know what you're saying about a wrecked car being different to a bit of paint, but they both have the same effect on how people feel about a place and, leading on from this, how they actually treat a place - even if they don't know why.

Hypothetically, think how you would feel walking down a pretty, smart, tree-lined street. Think again how you would feel on a street with boarded up or barred windows, paint-daubed walls, abandoned vehicles, . Although there may be no difference in your chances of being mugged, I would have thought you'd feel a lot more comfortable doing the former?

I'm pretty sure there's been quite a bit of research done in this field that backs this up (will have to dig out some of my old Uni books - then again, perhaps not...... :o)
