Does anyone know anything about bunkers located under the city or arround it? I've heard a few things about WW2 bunkers and modern nuclear bunkers but does any1 have any promissing evidence they are willing to share? Also, Are there any any small millitary installations anywhere near, either in use or abandonned? Anything that helps would be much appreciated.
Thanks

wasnt there supposed to be a huge nuclear bunker underneath the "eggbox" building... into which all the councillors would run in the event of a nuclear bomb..... (and be trapped under the rubble and die slowly - as shown in "Threads")
Hi
Don't know about Sheffield but if you're ever in Stockport do try and visit the World War II tunnels in the town centre. Well worth a visit if you're subterraneanly inclined.

If your refering to the one near Tankersley Manor it's not a bunker for general purpose use, although if there is a 3 minute warning I wouold assume that a few people will be knocking on the door. It actually belongs to HSBC and is a file archieve.
And the legendary Grenoside Ammo bunker is another urban myth and is just an old abandoned tip. Do you really think that in this day and age we would have live ammo left 'dumped' in a major city?
Ark, do you know something that i dont? i dont fancy dieing yet so please let me know if you have any inside information,my nan has still got her anderson shelter!!

This might be of interest, not many local sites though.
There was a tunnell from Fitzallen sq to the power generating plant at Kelham Island. Is this the bunker ?

I used to go to Firth Park School and at their Brushes site (now Longley Park sixth form college) on Barnsley rd there used to be old bunkers underneath there! The caretaker took us under when we should have been in Maths lol

If you walk the path around Beauchief Hall there's an old Observer Corps bunker, roughly West of the Hall, dating back to the days when observation bunkers were scattered around the place during the cold war.
Shame we put such a lot of effort into it back then - the Russians were never actually able to launch more than a handful of their total missile arsenal due to serviceability problems and bad designs.
Made for an interesting era though, and the threat of buckets of sunshine probably prevented a third world war that would have kicked off without the deterrent.
There are some huge bunker complexes scattered mainly down the East coast where we used to have our air defence radar stations, positioned there for obvious reasons, but nothing major that I know of in the Sheffield area, because we never had major military installations.
Some of the bunkers in other areas have now been sold off to mushroom growers! More will come up, mainly in the South, as the post-cold war era doesn’t require us to have deep bunkers (al Qa’ida doesn’t have a ballistic missile or strategic bombing capability just yet!) and they’re very expensive to run and maintain compared to traditional buildings. The underground facilities at Permanent Joint Headquarters at Northwood might remain but the main bunker at RAF Strike Command at High Wycombe is likely to be mothballed.
