It does matter (or should)...

Google flags one of the domains for net protector as a malware distributor: details (http://www.google.com/interstitial?url=http://www.netprotector.co.in/).

I'd (personally) have gone for one of the freeware AV packages over this one.

Avast free would certainly be preferable to 'Net Protector' - £3 a month is £36 a year for something you could get for free, and better.

Comodo do a free firewall and antivirus package (http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/free-internet-security.php)

Zonealarm do a basic firewall and a spyware blocker for free (http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/anti-virus-spyware-free-download.htm)

Alwil Avast has free antivirus with spyware protection (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)

AVG free antivirus & anti spyware (http://free.avg.com/)

MalwareBytes have a free malware scanner, the free version doesn't run in the background but it's very good at finding and removing the bad guys (http://www.malwarebytes.org/)

Lavasoft do a free version of their Ad-Aware antispyware package (http://www.lavasoft.com/)

SpyBot do a free antispyware tool with a passive protection feature, you can set it for auto updates and scans but I prefer doing this manually (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)

if you have a decent firewall an antivirus and an antispyware package you should be reasonably safe, however no combination of packages, even the paid for ones, can be guaranteed to keep the nasty stuff off your machine, but they will make it a lot harder for malware to get in

if you have a hard firewall in your router you may not need a soft firewall in your PC but it wouldn't hurt to have one

I would recommend you pick a firewall, an antivirus and an antispyware package from the above or from someone else's recommendation, I don't really mind, then as long as you keep them up to date you should be reasonably ok

I have Comodo AV & Firewall installed plus Superantispyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/) and run Spybot and Malwarebyes regularly with Ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) thrown in.

Hi Peeps,

A word of warning here [unfortunately I cannot quote esme as his/her link contains website urls and as this is my first post I will have to submit 4 more before I can quote other forum users who have urls in their posts! - the latest Spybot Search & Destroy Engine uses parts of Lavasofts AdAware and won't work while the latter is present on your PC - I found out this myself! I'm with gillybear but not on ccleaner as this also gets rid of stuff you might want to keep so be careful how you use it!

Best regards,
swarfendor43

Best regards,
swarfendor43I did say "pick a firewall, an antivirus and an antispyware package" from firewall, antivirus and antispyware i.e. pick one from each category AdAware and SpyBot are both antispyware so install one or the other but not both

my apologies if I didn't make that clear

if you have two antivirus or antispyware packages installed, then each may see parts of the other as being malware and attempt to fix it, this may break the package being fixed, case in point being AdAware and SpyBot

plus it's silly installing two firewalls as only the last one you install will work as the new firewall will turn any existing firewall off as it installs, so multiple firewalls just take up disk space

one exception to this rule, at least for the moment, MalwareBytes seems fairly tolerant of other packages, this may change one day, there again the free MalwareBytes scanner needs to be run manually

...I cannot quote esme as his/her...esme is short for esmerelda ;)

Hi esme,

I believe the only conflicting anti-spyware/malware programs are S&D and Ad-Aware as the former uses part of the latters engine. Most mags point out that you need more than one Anti-spyware program due to the nature of Malware - not the same for Anti-virus as you so rightly pointed out becuase Anti-virus programs are written using virus code so one will always try to eradicate the other.

Best regards,
