View Full Version : Travelmaster Daytripper to Doncaster

I bought a Travelmaster Daytripper (£6.60 one, so can use trains before 9:30) to use on Thursday, and while I know I can use it to get a train to Doncaster, are there any limits on which train?

Also, how do I use it on the trains? Do I get a ticket at the desk by showing the pass or do I board the train and show the pass to the ticket inspector?

Thanks!

I think (hence the think) it's the "local" trains (eg. not Virgin/East Midlands Train - cross country ones).

As far as im aware, the £5.50 ones (After 9.30) you can use on local trains and not the fast ones. So im presuming the one you have would be the same. You just show the ticket you get to the train conductor on the £5.50 one also, again im not sure if its the same as the one you have! :)

How do I know which are local or not?

Local used to be Northern Rail - but not sure who they are now. (Usually not the fast ones)!!

So, I can't use the cross country trains?

You never used to be able to. A bit like you can't use your TravelMaster on National Express, but you could on X78 First bus Sheffield - Doncaster.

What about Transpennine Express?

I don't use trains a lot, so I got the Travel Master because I thought it'd make things easier, now it seems to be limiting me!

Hmmm - not sure on that one! I think best thing you can do is ask at the ticket office which is the next train to Doncaster you can use your TravelMaster on!

I'll probably do that anyway, I like to be sure!

Thanks for your advice, everyone.

Yeah, ask at the desk. Thats what I do. The 'fast' trains are usually ones going to london etc the local one which serves doncaster is lincoln one. I use that one, I think it runs half hourly. :)

As long as I get there in good time, I'll be fine. It's for a job interview! Coming back, I'm not quite bothered how long it takes as long as I get home eventually. :hihi:

I'm wanting Frenchgate Interchange when I get there, as far as I'm aware, it's right next door, so it should be difficult to miss.

Yep it is. It used to be over the road, but they've built them both together now so that they integrate.

if the rules are the same for mobility passes then you can use them on all trains between here and donny

Just validate the ticket in advance of travel and can be used on ALL services to Doncaster.
its NOT valid on rail services operated by National Express East Coast.
A terms and conditions leaflet can be downloaded from the travel SY website.

The travel master ticket or any variation ie day tripper etc is valid on all schedulelded trains between any two points on south yorkshire

Therefore you can use your ticket on X Country etc , you may have problems with some gaurds on XC as they are not familiar witht the tickets, if I have a problem I usualy say "its a pte ticket " and they just accept it

So, I would imagine the only condition is I must get off the train before it leaves the South Yorkshire boundary?

Can I ask what 'pte' stands for?

See: http://www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/Tickets_Passes/ticket_types/travel_south_yorkshire_tickets.html.htm

TravelMaster passes are not valid on National Express East Coast trains as these stop at only one station within the South Yorkshire boundary.

All these company names are what's confusing me. Do Cross Country trains come under the National Express East Coast train company? :help:

No.

The National Express East Coast trains are the ones running from Doncaster to Newcastle/Scotland, northwards, and London, southwards. Since Doncaster is the only station within South Yorkshire at which they stop, there is no trip you could possibly make on them, on which the pass would be valid.

Any train that stops at Sheffield, and later stops at Doncaster, you're allowed on.

No if I remember correctly cross country are what used to be virgin and national express are what used to be GNER.

You can use a travelmaster on transpenine express. When I used to buy them I also used them on cross country with no problems.

For future use there is a national rail enquiries line on 08457 48 49 50, and there is the traveline run by Travel South Yorkshire on 01709 51 51 51.

Plus there are no NE-EC trains that use Sheffield anyway. So don't worry about restrictions. Just get on the first train from Sheffield to Doncaster that comes, and vice versa coming back.

The occasional problem on cross-country services (at least, we used to find this with our local tickets) is that, if the conductor that day happens to be from Glasgow, or London, he might never have seen one before and not have a clue what it is. The local train conductors are thoroughly familiar with local passes, so you never run into any problems with them.

Cross Country operate trains operate trains between the west country and the north east it was called virgin cross country . It is not connected with east coast.

Back to basics: if the train operates a service between two stations in south yorkshire then the ticket is valid - end of story

Guys, the DayTripper (5.50) does the same job as a DayRover(6.60) but a day rover lets you go on trams also. The DayTripper can be bought before 9.30 (I have had this out with the conductor numerous times and they will default to giving you a Rover even if you ask for a tripper... scandalous).

The main difference between a Travelmaster Day ticket @ £6.60 is that it allows travel on trains ALL DAY EVERY DAY plus buses and trams.
The daytripper DOES NOT ALLOW train travel before 0930 MONDAY to FRIDAY however bus and tram has no time restication.

I bought the daytripper for travel that day before half 9 and not for the first time so either more than one conductor is making mistakes or people are being ripped off.

Does anyone have the rules in writing?

This is what I was told, so I bought the £6.60 one.
