UV will sort out your green water so long as you have a filter to catch the algae as it co-agulates (sticks together) but if your problem is blanket weed you are going to need another type of control e.g "Blanket Answer".

Can't you clean it yourself. Just save some of the water and drain / syphon the rest out. Clean all the sludge out and re-fill finally adding the water you saved to condition it. Leave it a couple of days with the pump running for the the Chlorine / Chloromine to evaporate off before adding the fish back.

I cleaned out my pond myself 2 years ago as the liner needed changing. My son helped as it was quite a job (4ft deep, 10x8 ft size). We used the slugde from the bottom on the borders and the plants loved it - they came up a treat the following year!

I always pour the pond water, used to clean the filters out, into the water butt. It makes the water greeny-brown, but I am sure it makes the plants grow better.

I've got some oxygenating weed and pond weed (duck weed) in my pond which keeps it very clear - you are welcome to have some for your pond if you want. Only introduce duck weed though if you are sure you want it, because its very difficult to get rid of once introduced.

Barley staw is supposed to help clear your pond...

Supposed is the correct word.

For the low down on Barley Straw this is a good site to visit.

hbarley-straw. (http://www.simplegiftsfarm.com/barley-straw.html)

My own personal view is that it is a waste of time. I have never had any success with it,having tried all ways of using it including the liquid. And 5 1/2 pounds (dry weight) of the stuff fluffed and up put into sacks or net bags in a 10 x 11 pond is a lot of Barley Straw.

The thing is some ponds just dont need it, but finding the right balance of stocking, feeding, plants and lily coverage of surface area is a life long quest for some people. If you want clear water go the way of the Koi guys. Uv + Filtration = clear water (guaranteed) = a happy water gardener. :)

Save yourself time energy and money and fit a UV light to you pump.
And as I said above, "Blanket Answer" is expensive but clears blanketweed like lightning.

Ive got a very small pond with 4 goldfish in it, the pond does have a water feature pouring into it but I think I may need a filter thing to keep the water clean, Im new to all this so any advice will be well received.
Where can i get such a thing .... do they come in small size and how much will it cost me?

What you want is a pond filter with a uv light to keep your pond free of algae

oxygenating plants, such as duckweed, are what's required .. just make sure you remove some from the pond every summer. Its organic and very cheap.

Is it possible that you are getting an influx of nitrogen rich water from somewhere?

same here, though I've not managed to find the leak yet!. It went down by about 3ft and has stopped going down now so I'll give it a clean out when the weather is nice and find the leak. The poor Koi are down to 2 1/2ft to swim around in :(

ponds need at least25% cover with aquatic plants and a situation noy in direct sunlight its just to much nitrogen in your pond try not to overfeed your fish oh and you can buy a liquid concentrate to clear the water but it's quite pricey middletons at the bottom of the moor sell a barley straw roll wrapped in netting for about three pounds and it worked a treat in mine

I closed my pond early this year after 25 year never had a water change never really lost many fish and the water was crystal clear all due to having iris in the pond
As for barley yep its ok long as you put it in a mesh container dont let it rot down or that clogs pumps as well only cleans algi up though takes a week or so to show any improvments.

I have a small pond in my garden and its got the usual pump and filter and they work fine and have been doing for about five years now- but I was thinking of making a bigger filter for myself....

I have an old wheely bin and I was thinking of using that, just sealing the holes up where the axle went and painting it green and then making a hole for the inlet hose and then another for the outlet tube... It`ll be a long drop from there back into the pond but I reckon if I had enough of those sponge things inside for the bacteria then it`d work a treat... The water would be in there for longer and would come out cleaner and fresher and thats got to be better for the fish....

Does anyone know if this`ll work? Has anyone tried it? Would so much clean water going back into the pond cause new pond syndrome or something?

The ponds only small and the water in the bin would be able to half fill it if it was all poured in at once....

it will work what i would do is put different stuff in filter to help like sponge and then another filter medium brushs + bits of old flexi tubeing , ive built a vegie filter its realy working well ive had no problems with green water or blanket weed and keep water realy clear a few links to filters

I think the important thing is to place a divider in the bin. You dont want the water to just come in on one side and go in a straight line out of the other. It needs to come in travel down through the filter medium then up and out of the outlet. So divide the wheely bin in half with a gap at the bottom to allow the water to flow under and up. I would fit a drain tap in the bottom to get rid of the settled sediment every now and again.

As you will be increasing the volume of your pond, you are going to have to check that the flow rate of you pump is fast enough and powerful enough to lift the water without losing too much flow rate. A wheely bin is a tall object. Most filter systems are kept low with this in mind. Dont forget to add the volume of the filter to the volume of the water when dosing your pond with treatments.
