A 21-year-old Derbyshire man who has recently lost his sight was taken to hospital after being attacked.

The victim was knocked over and kicked on the canal towpath at Ironville, Derbyshire, on Saturday night.

His attackers ran off after throwing his white stick into the canal. Police said the man had only just gained the confidence to go out walking alone.

They said the man suffered "serious" injuries and was taken to Derbyshire Royal Infirmary

Let's hope they are caught and given lengthy sentences

Yeah , let's hope they catch the b******s.
A good sentence for them , if found guilty , would be dredging canals , with no privileges of any sort , for an indefinite period. Only when they'd been passed by a very strict parole board would they even be considered for release.
When I suggested something like this , some time ago , combined with hard-run Youth Labour Camps , it was howled down by a majority on S.F.
I don't for one minute think they'll suffer much at all , even if they're caught and put away-------visits , good food , gymnasiums , T.V. , music , use of telephone and a bit of gentle counselling-----better than most of them have got on the outside , I bet.

How about a temporary bonding agent in their eyes then off to Rampton Prison with a sock in their mouth for a weekend. Nobody will hear their screams!

Unfortunately, this isn't as rare as people think. :(

My Mom is partially sighted, and she has some friends with sight impairment that she has met through different college courses and groups designed for people with these kind of problems.

One woman my Mom knows was surrounded by scum who shouted in her face and jostled her about in a busy shopping area in broad daylight. She was very shaken, although they didn't physically harm her.

I'd love to find the evil people that do things like this; I'd give them a damn good kicking, and violence really isn't my style.

Just another case in an ever growing list of thuggery that simply is not being dealt with by the people who make the laws. If these nasty little thugs do get caught they will be portrayed as the victims of society and therefore almost blameless. I've noticed they're going to be showing a new series of 'Bad Lads Army' and think that rather than it just being a bit of entertaining TV footage they should open up a boot camp on some isolated island off the coast and start showing thugs that there are hard consequences to their actions.

Mr Strix suggests this one (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&ukwidth=289&ukheight=301&scale=%0D%0A2000000&lang=&overviewmap=GB_over&db=&g.x=14&g.y=98)
It's an island on our atlas, but I like the multimap version for them

Edit: I tried Googling it, and look what I found (http://www.therockalltimes.co.uk/)

There are indeed scumbags who stoop so low as to attack a blind man. They are the gentlemen of the press and parliamentary Labour party who dealt with Dave 'nanny state' Blunkett so roughly in the wake of his indiscretion with Kimberly 'if you're influential, I'm yours' Quinn. But then Davo has always been a bit of a bully, and one suspects that finally karma came knocking on his door.

Im not condoning the attack, but does it matter that they attacked a blind man? In my opinion its a ruthless attack no matter wether he was blind or not.

I believe that an attack is an attack, and shouldnt be done no matter what. All attacks are wrong and to me this is no worse than attacking a fully sighted person from behind and doing the exact same thing.

True, but you could argue its callous, in the same way if a able bodied person attacked an elderly disabled person.

It is particularly disgusting because he may have had little or no means of protecting himself.

This sort of thing has also been happening for years, as the following reports from BBC News Online show:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/2069735.stm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2793659.stm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2798133.stm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/3201152.stm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3338729.stm

Those are just some of the cases that have been covered by BBC News Online and I suspect that there will be a lot more similar cases that have been covered by local newspapers over the years.

Human cruelty is boundless, and never ceases to amaze. Back in the late seventies , a relative of mine made the local news by stopping and exposing a campaign of persecution perpetrated by teenagers against a blind Sheffielder. Amongst various petty torments, the pair had fixed up' trip wires' in his garden. They had taken fiendish note of his habit of standing outside to smell the aroma of flowers he would never see. The 'trip wires' [taut strings, meticulously placed] were planned so as to catch him when engaging in his mild, blameless pleasure.
