View Full Version : Awesome mod!
Do you have Win98se or WinME and wanna run "XP" only programs??
Try this > http://sourceforge.net/projects/kernelex

Must be installed on Win98/WinME (Dunno if anything else will work but this looks awesome!!) and you must have Microsoft Layer for Unicode (MSLU)
Basically this adds a COMPATIBILITY MODE... (http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/2127/sheet.png)
Known problems:
Despite changing Windows version in compatibility tab some programs complain about wrong system version. Example: Adobe Flash Player 10
Solution
Create "xp.reg" file in notepad with following contents
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"CurrentVersion"="5.1"
Double click on "xp.reg" file.
Install the program.
Create "unxp.reg" file in notepad with following contents
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"CurrentVersion"=-
Double click on "unxp.reg" file.
I wonder what the driver support is like, if you install drivers using this? will they hold the compatability (like 98 drivers on XP) and work...
Some testing required methinks ;)

When you install it, does it laugh at the poor user and redirect them to a store site where they can buy Windows 7?
I honestly can't see why people still stick with a 12 year old system. XP is now perfectly stable and even Vista isn't that bad. The only problem I have with v64 is compatability with some PC Postscript fonts - and they're all available as opentype now anyway.
Friends don't let friends use Windows ME.
98 ran out of support with Microsoft a while ago, not sure they even do security updates any more?
Friends don't let friends use Windows ME.An auld, auld one but still as good, must confess I had a chuckle :hihi:

We all disagree. After 6 six years without a reinstall, I formatted my Me machine. got it all new with classic games on it running like XP and Vista cannot do.
In fact with this mod there could well be no need to hate Vista and 7 any more hurrah.
waddler8 04-09-2009, 22:23 98 ran out of support with Microsoft a while ago, not sure they even do security updates any more?Extended support including security updates for Win98 an ME ended over three years ago.

I can't see why people want to use Windows 7, or Vista, or Macs but they do.Yeah really....
Over bloated pieces of crap!! (And macs arent much better)
Why do people always gotta have "The latest and greatest"?? (The latest isnt always the best (Usually isnt))
The older OSs are MUCH BETTER (With 98se being one of the BEST 'windows' releases ever)
The older os's are just that, old, they cannot and will not support new hardware and as such if you upgrade (and you will eventually) you will have to get used to a new os, that's just progress, I can't understand why people ate so afraid of progress and change.

Can't you protect your computer yourself? Don't you have older hardware? Not so long ago the only reason you'd pester me was to beg for sticks of DDR1 RAM. What you building, a computer for the appreciation society of 1.2GHz processors?
I agree with dude, 98 (SE) is a far better OS than Whistler, Longhorn or Blackcomb with their bloated interface and impractical features.
The support for newer hardware, the need for the latest gadgets has got nothing to do with some people's need for older OS. There's a little more to it than "I'm a tool and I download Windows sidebar gadgets". Nostalgia, the want for support of older games, the interface, the functioning is why a substantial of the web browsing to this day is done by 98 and Me users. That misguided tool, the BBC's technology reporter, carries on about that despite complaining about going to Norfolk on weekends and not being able to update his Facebook status: what a sad person.
mr chris 05-09-2009, 08:30 Windows 98 and ME account for an almost forgettable proportion of current users. (0.13% according to this site (http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php)). And while that's subjective, it's a fairly accurate indicator.
In fact, looking at the stars for a client's site - which deals very much with both the public sector and private sectors (so, a normal mix), W98 is 0.15% and Windows ME doesn't even show up on either. Even Windows 2000 - the stalwart of the public sector network setups, accounts for only 1-3%.
What happens when their precious 98 setup goes bang, and they find they can't buy a new system to install it on because nothing is supported by a 12 year old OS with, to be honest, the flakiest USB support I've ever encountered.
Newer doesn't always mean better, but for people like me, it's necessary. Technology is all about moving forward - it's why computers aren't steam powered.
Although that would be really rather sweet.
Old_Bloke 05-09-2009, 08:38 I have a Mac laptop with the latest version of OSX. Great for everyday use, does what I need it to do without any issues and does it fast. But I still have an old PowerMac running OS9 so that I can play old games like Dark Forces, Marathon etc. Nice to have a bit of nostalgia sometimes :)
horribleblob 05-09-2009, 08:55 ...I still have an old PowerMac running OS9
Me too, I have OS9 running on an old G4. So reliable.
Yeah really....

No it wasn't, in comparison to XP (after 3 SPs), 98 is pants. Plus you won't have had security updates for a very long time so it's nice and hackable. Then there's the fact you couldn't use any IE greater than 6 (maybe you wouldn't want to).
Seriously why don't you go back to Windows for Workgroups 3.11 because it's older and less bloated it must be better right?
sallonoroff 07-09-2009, 20:19 I have OS9 running on an old G4. So reliable.
Really?
In, what, 8 years my G3 iMac has only crashed once running OSX. When i ran OS9 on it i had no end of freezes and it properly crashed 4 or 5 times.
When you install it, does it laugh at the poor user and redirect them to a store site where they can buy Windows 7?Not at all because Win98 is MUCH BETTER (As far as privacy and customizable to the user goes) Why reference an OS thats offers LESS PRIVACY??

auto98uk 12-02-2010, 08:22 Course, there is older software that simply wont work on newer OS's, even with something like dosbox, so 98 is really the latest you can go, as ME is just generally so poor, and by XP it was no longer DOS based
