i don't know what it could be exactly, but next time it happens try plugging in some external speakers if you can, if that works it could be a fault on the tv speakers, if not it could be an input.

does it lose audio while watching built in freeview? or while on an external source, ie sky or dvd.

but if an external speaker set works, could be a cheaper option than having it repaired

Just because its out of warranty doesn't mean all is lost. There is a little known policy called "serviceable life span" or simply "service life". This is how long you should expect a product to work for and how long the manufacturer should be expected to remain responsible for servicing it. For pricey electrical products like plasma TVs the manufacturer will usually quote a service life of 3-5 years.
If you are just out of warranty you should have no problem contacting the manufacturer, mentioning the "serviceable life span" and getting them to repair or replace your TV without charge.

You will need to be pretty firm with them though. They may well try to make out they don't understand what you are on about. Just stand your ground and tell them that you are fully aware of the "service life" and don't take no for an answer!

The shop you bought it from is the supplier
Or did you mean the manufacturer?
The shop are obliged to exchange or refund a faulty item within 90 days of purchase. After that time they are allowed to pass responsibility on to the manufacturer. Some stores will exchange/refund after 90 days but that is their choice.
If you go into a store talking about "service life" I'm pretty sure they won't have a clue what your talking about and offer no help whatsoever.
You'd be better off contacting the manufacturer direct.

Found it, its the shop, i copied this from the link below

"• It is the seller, not the manufacturer, who is responsible if goods do not conform to contract."

Fair dinkum! :)
Although I still think you will be met with a blank expression if you try to talk to anyone in a shop about 'service life' or 'goods not conforming to contract'.

Might be an idea to print off the info in the link provided by Solar Jetman. :)
