What were your fave's ? Cheers:thumbsup: Jon 24-07-2005, 10:53 Its not like you not to a search of the site Comics (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2817&highlight=comics) SpiderPete 24-07-2005, 10:57 I cannot see the "Shoot" football magazine there. Jon 24-07-2005, 11:02 If you like comics try this website (http://www.comicsuk.co.uk/Links/LinksMain.asp) I would say the Beano was my favourite when i was a kid :) And my vote went to the Beano. Kristian 24-07-2005, 11:31 I can't believe you forgot Whoopee and Wow, Lestat! Classic! Lestat 24-07-2005, 12:23 Originally posted by Kristian I can't believe you forgot Whoopee and Wow, Lestat! Classic! I know Kris! but there would be far too many to name then!!:P  . . robbie 24-07-2005, 12:36 out of those the Beano (could have someting to do with not paying for it and getting free sweets with it) But mostly reading Marvel stuff. my favourites were: Daredevil Fantastic Four Amazing Spiderman Thundercats NAM MTheo 24-07-2005, 14:01 dandy.... but quickly moved onto x-men, amazing spiderman etc timo 24-07-2005, 15:11 I certainly liked Beano, Dandy, Cor!!, Whizzer and Chips etc. However, my real favourites were the imported American Marvel comics. Around 1967, I started to read Fantastic, Smash and Pow, which were British comics which included some Marvel stories [Hulk, Thor, Avengers, Fantastic Four, Spider Man etc], alongside 'Beano'-style British character strips. The proper, imported Marvel comics with their wonderful artwork and exciting, diverse range of characters were the best. I can honestly say that my reading standard improved greatly as a result of being given these comics to read. I caught my late father reading them too on occasion, though he never knew that I'd seen him, nor of the pleasure it caused me. Kthebean 24-07-2005, 15:13 I loved the beano :) Have you seen how much it costs nowadays? :wow: Fareast 24-07-2005, 15:16 Does anyone remember the ,"Lion" ? It was a sort of rival to the Eagle and must have been on the go between 1949 and 1953. They had a system where if they published your birthdate , you won the choice of about 6 prizes. I won and picked a junior Conjuring set and drove everybody potty with it { " Now , look in this matchbox . What can you see ?"} Also , I used to read any comic I could get my hands on ----Beano , Dandy , Radio Fun , Film Fun and I think one called . "Knockout ". I used to love the Xmas Annuals too. deano 24-07-2005, 16:40 Used to get...Roy of the rovers, beano and whizzer and chips, collected them all on a saturday morning and had read them by saturday lunchtime!! Incidently does anybody know of any resource for finding back issues? Had a full page letter printed in roy of the rovers, think it must have been around 1980,i know it's a long shot but would love to get hold of a copy! soupy 24-07-2005, 16:58 when I was growing up I read 2000AD every week then every fortnight Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper being my favourite characters, from that has left me with a life long love of graphic novels nad comics from DC to the more bizarre stuff from Joss Whedon my current fav has to be global frequency they are going to make it into a film and or tv show cant wait. Rich 24-07-2005, 16:58 I used to get the Star Wars comic when I was a kid.. Few years ago that.. madowl 24-07-2005, 19:28 The beano comic was the number 1 for me, i know this may be sad but i was even in the fan club, there was a sign to other members like "ding"dong" or something stupid like that, i even remember my membership bages of dennis and gnasher, with the wobbly eyes.....:suspect: sad... LellyBee 24-07-2005, 19:47 Voted other, I used to love 2000AD, Rogue Trooper and Slaine particularly  tara 24-07-2005, 20:47 My favourite comic was June, favourite character was Bessie Bunter. Also can anyone tell me which comic Big Head and Thick head used to appear in (late 70s- 80s) was it Beano or Dandy. I also liked the one where a boy played this flute thing and characters from posters came to life -again either Beano or Dandy. Some of you young ones obviously wont know, maybe i should have put this in the history section. Beakerzoid 24-07-2005, 22:23 Fantastic Four - loved them from an early age, still do today. timo 24-07-2005, 23:14 Tara, Big Head and Thick Head [forerunners of Messrs Blair and Prescott] were featured in The Dandy. spyro2000 24-07-2005, 23:22 The Beano was always my fave, along with Judge Dredd the comic. Used to read both on a regular basis as a yute Captain_Scarlet 25-07-2005, 00:24 I doubt any of you know these, but I read, and still do: Valérian & Universal War One. Both of them excellent :) redrobbo 25-07-2005, 00:59 Read both the Beano and Dandy as a kid, but managed to avoid progressing to The Sun as an adult. :hihi: Fareast 25-07-2005, 02:46 I used to love The Sun newspaper - comic....... the silly cartoons , the made-up news items , the OTT comments , the outrageous editorials------it was really funny for kids. Also the language was nice and simple and you never knew what they were going to say next. One week they would want to castrate the Lefties and the next week the Righties. I think some wierd Aussie bloke used to draw the funny pictures. Yes , hilarious !! Later , I moved on , like a lot of other tots to the Dandy and Beano Carmine 25-07-2005, 08:48 Originally posted by LellyBee Voted other, I used to love 2000AD, Rogue Trooper and Slaine particularly  Huge fan of the old Celtic killing machine myself...loved Durham Red for as long as the strip ran as well. BoppinBruce 25-07-2005, 08:59 Fareast, I remember Lion and its stablemate Tiger. Didn't Roy of the Rovers start off in Lion? The multigoalscoring Roy Race of Malchester United. I read the D.C. Thomson stable of Beano and Dandy but also a couple of comics called Comet and Sun, wonderful comics. Also the small 10d ones, Battler Brittain, Kit Carson, Buck Jones. The Alan Class publications were good as well, Suspense, Eerie etc. All reproductions from American comics to do with the supernatural. Anyone got any of the early 60's girls' comics like Roxy where the stories are based around pop songs of the day? Like to see some of them again. And yes I am a male! Lickszz 25-07-2005, 23:24 Roy of the Rovers for me. Splodge_CRB 26-07-2005, 01:08 Superman....Fantastic Four....I was glued to those comics I was desperately in love with Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern, mind you I also had a crush on Spock from Star Trek too :help: Fareast 26-07-2005, 04:17 BoppinBruce , Oddly enough, I can't remember Tiger comic. I wonder whether some shops didn't sell every type of comic ? I never thought about that. I used to get all my comics from , "Cross's " , on Ecclesall Road , the one near the bottom of Thompson Road [ gone now !].This was between 1949 and 1953 so I shouldn't be too surprised , really ! willman 26-07-2005, 07:14 Hotspur Victor Fantastic Four X Men desy 26-07-2005, 07:25 Do you also remember the little Commando books you use to get they also brought a series of football one's out. The first was about a big league club (Carford City) and the second was about a group of blokes that set up there own team pitch, clubhouse etc. (Bradmere Rovers) willman 26-07-2005, 07:54 remember the commando books used to exchange them at a stall in Castle Market. timo 26-07-2005, 11:12 Desy, I remember the Commando books [they were similar in content to Victor comic]. They contained 'realistic ' portrayals of Second World War action in which Allied forces easily routed crack German SS Panzer Divisions, and the Japanese were always on the retreat in Burma and Malaya. The German Officers all wore sinister monocles, and referred to Allied POWs as 'Englander Pigdogs'. The ordinary German soldiery were depicted as square-featured and prone to shout 'Achtung!' when hurling a grenade, and 'Gott in Himmel' [or something like it] when perplexed and bewildered by the always superior Allied tactics. The Japanese were all gimlet-eyed, buck-toothed sadists, given to hiding in bushes and shouting 'Herrow Tommy! Where are you?!'. They always lost in hand to hand combat, even if they were Officers and expert Samurai swordsmen. I wonder if that is how it really was in World War Two?The Allies must have been bored at times with so many easy victories... Tubthump 26-07-2005, 13:54 2000AD- Strontium Dog, Nemesis The Warlock, RoboHunter, Judge Dredd (of course), Zenith - all good stuff. WHY WHY WHY has no-one mentioned Whizzer & Chips? Lightninboy 26-07-2005, 15:57 Commando books!!!! Yeah!!! "Achtung......Spitfire..........Aiiiieeeeeeeeeee!" "For you Pritish Tommy, ze war is over" Brilliant non-pc kids stuff! 2000AD again like Tubthump and also (although not really a comic) the Steve Jackson Fighting Fantasy book things. timo 27-07-2005, 15:14 Tubthump, Re Whizzer and Chips, scroll back to page one, and you will find that I give the comic a mention. It was similar to Corr!, Beezer, Beano and Dandy and published [I think] by IPC. I seem to recall a free powdered orange drink with issue one, or maybe that was Corr! comic instead? At any rate, I used to like it. darkcharm 27-07-2005, 15:18 does anybody remember oink i still have the first few comics of that i dont think it lasted that long though Tubthump 27-07-2005, 15:19 Originally posted by timo Tubthump, Re Whizzer and Chips, scroll back to page one, and you will find that I give the comic a mention. At any rate, I used to like it. Oh yeah, so you did. Good to see likeminded folk here. It was an IPC publication. Wasn't Sid the Snake a leading strip? timo 27-07-2005, 16:04 Tubthump, Yes, Sid was definately featured, but I can't remember much else. I always thought that the IPC comics were more up to date, and printed on better quality paper than their DC Thompson rivals. Mind you, despite publishing on what resembled cheap lavatory paper in the 60s and 70s, the latter company probably sold more with their Dandy and Beano comics. I believe they are still popular today, but have been revamped. One imagines Dennis the Menace in Burberry, on an 'Asbo', and Minnie the Minx encouraged to 'come to terms with' her obvious lesbianism. samc 29-07-2005, 15:04 Twinkle when I was very small and then Blue Jeans then Just Seventeen. Suppose now I should be reading Good Housekeeping... chuffinel 07-08-2005, 23:43 Wow ! you people must all be pretty young. What about "Braddock" and "Bernard Briggs" ( he could tighten up a nut without using a spanner, drove a motorbike with sidecar) and "Wilson" ( the greatest athlete in the world who lived as a hermit on the moors somewhere) ? What about the guy (whose name escapes me who used a cricket bat as a weapon when required) He called it "clicky bah" or something like that, lived in the Himalayas somewhere ? I think that they appeared in the "Hotspur" or "Wizard" This was in the late 40's or early 50's. Most of it was not politically correct for today's world but I don't think too many kids who read them grew up to be druggies, grannie-bashers and cop haters. Beakerzoid 08-08-2005, 00:17 Originally posted by darkcharm does anybody remember oink i still have the first few comics of that i dont think it lasted that long though Oh I remember it with a sense of glee.
