View Full Version : URGENT - someone needed to pick up stray dog *gone home*

Lotti

Mummysaz has just phoned on her way to work, she has a dog following her and it's been following for a while - none of the shops will take it and she has to go to work.

Unfortunately, I am ill and can't drive so have said I'll try and find someone else to do it.

Can anyone please pick this dog up? She is scared of being late to work and they have just crossed a busy road. Apparently it's a lovely, very well behaved little dog.

Please??

Its S5 area of Sheffield, near Firth Park and Southey Green.

I'd take it in, but my cat might not like me anymore :(

How long are you looking at someone to take it in? Is it until the warden can get round to pick it up?

I might be able to take it for an hour or 2...

gina2007
03-09-2009, 08:07
Oh and thats if someone can bring it to me, I dont drive and don't have a lead for a dog either!

Lotti
03-09-2009, 08:12

Might try them...

If there is anyone who can get it to me, i'll be able to take it in for a few hours. Will have to keep the cat upstairs and dog downstairs. Im in Shiregreen too.

Any idea when they are open? Umm... I cant think of anyone whos not working with a car!

Aw bless...

Dogs do love cat food :D

Try to make sure he doesn't get too much of it though, mummysaz said he looked quite old and cat food is quite rich on a dog's tummy...

Thanks so much Nikita for collecting him!

He started eating it, then turned his nose up at it :hihi:

If I had to guess, i'd say he's 8-10 years old. But knowing me, he could be 4!

Hes a gingery, black, white and brown coloured. Pretty small-medium dog. Very placid.

And hes chilled out on my kitchen floor, while Charlie is trying to get his attention to stroke him :hihi:

Not now you have company it isnt.

I know, hes so sweet though. He is very very placid and just silent. Hasnt made a peep or anything. Hes had a good sniff around, and other than that nothing else.

Id keep him if I could.

Going to let him on the garden soon, to see if he wants to pee or anything.

No, ive been informed that I have to, legally, report him. But ive told them I dont want them picking him up, as we *think* we know where he lives. The lady said its fine, and if we cant find his home, to give them a call back and they'll try to get him when they can. Hoping we find his home, we needn't call the pound back.

Heres hoping...!

nikita

Your an angel for looking after him.

Lotti
03-09-2009, 10:06
Nikita,

You have to, by law, inform the dog warden of a dog you have. Have explained to Gina you can report to Dog warden and request a 28 day notice thingy by which you keep the dog for 28 days and try to find it's owner.

Being elderly and well behaved and not as big as mine, if all else fails, I'm sure I could take him for some time - its only when they're bigger than Takara or too bouncy for Eddy that it becomes a problem! (My mother will be so chuffed)

gina2007
03-09-2009, 10:25
I hope it doesnt come to having to hand him over to the pound.

The people on the phone where great. Just asked about the colour and sex and if he had a collar on, gave me a reference number and that was that.

He's getting hungry, what can I give him?

Have lots of cat food, which as another post said might not be too good for him. Ive got ham, chicken, turkey... sandwich meat. Ive got Iams (cats one though!). Hes just grabbed my sons dairylea dunker from him :hihi: and licked the cheese out of it!

Ive got tinned meatballs..

Anything I can give him?

x

Aww bless him  no wonder you want to keep the little cutie!

:hihi:

Ive called the OH at work to let him know, and he just said "Right.. bye" he hates me cause I have a thing for animals and if he'd let me, i'd have loadssss!

Lotti
03-09-2009, 10:28
Do you have any eggs? a scrambled egg would no doubt go down well (only one or two mind, we don't want to bung him up!) - or weetabix?

Any sandwich meat should be ok (I am assuming of course that he's not got any dietary intolerances).

Meatballs, again should be fine - if you don't mind feeding him your food! lol!

Oh dear...

gina2007
03-09-2009, 10:32
I'll give him the meatballs to be on the safe side.

Ive got weetabix yes. Eggs, yes but if he lets wind out... the aftermath!

Just put the meatballs on a plate and theyre going down, slowly and sniffing at them but going down fine.

Rainrescue
03-09-2009, 10:36
Oh Gina well done for doing that and everyone for helping him - another great use of SF isn't it. Bless him - he looks gorgeous.

Just be careful the meatballs aren't too runny Gina - (poops and all that), if u need help buying any buscuits for him, buy them and we will pay for them for you. scrambled egg and weetabix would be fine for the time being but as long as he has water he wlll e ok.

No doubt seadog will get him up on Dogslost site or have a scout around.
if u are anywhere near to a vets - u could get him scanned to see if he has a microchip implanted and registered to the owner.

If u do end up keeping him for the time he's up for rehoming - then we will help rehome him at the end of that time if he's not muscled his way into your home.

well done everyone

BladeDD
03-09-2009, 10:37
Checked if he is microchipped? I hope you have as it should be the first thing to do (after a bit of food n fuss). Im sure you have done this though :) any vets will do it.

gina2007
03-09-2009, 10:42
My nearest vets is a bus ride away. Its not the distance thats the problem. I have a toddler in a pram and dont have a proper lead, got some string/rope stuff. I dont want to risk taking him out, incase he gets into a fight or something with another dog and i'll have my son to think about aswell.

Unfortunatly, I dont tend to have anything to microchip him at home.. :hihi:

Thanks Rain, and thanks for the offer but I can afford some biscuits and a tin of food. Very nice of you though.

BladeDD
03-09-2009, 10:44
Maybe someone on here who drives who has the time (wish i could drive) could just nip him up to a vets because if he is registered and not scanned its not fair on thw owners (mind you in my experience he might not be but needs to be checked).

jediwarrior
03-09-2009, 10:45
gina where abouts do u live? pm me we have a microchip scanner and are in pagehall if ur not to far i can bring it up 2 u and scan him

BladeDD
03-09-2009, 10:49
great idea jedi :) Also is you need any food gina i have some wagg complete biscuits. its only a small bag but might help :) at least he is warm cos weather is horrible today.

gina2007
03-09-2009, 10:59
PM'd you Jedi.

I cant go out with the dog, no suitable lead and a pram to tow with me. It might not be the hardest of tasks, but I nor anyone else knows the background of said dog so we dont know what he's going to be like with other dogs. Seriously dont want him fighting with another dog and having my son with me.

Atleast he's in a nice warm house, for now. When the OH gets in he is going to look after my son, so I can take the dog to be scanned. Until then, theres not a great deal I can actually do.

Will be going to buy some biscuits/tinned food when I get dressed.

Lotti
03-09-2009, 11:01
Gina, I'm beginning to feel a little better (she says...) and am having to go out anyway as the docs won't give me antibiotics without seeing me so if I go out and feel well enough to, I may be about this afternoon if you need a lift or a dog lead or something :)

I'll let you know how I go on and whether I'm safe behind the wheel of a car!

Well done - what you've done is fab and it's just one of those things that you can't get out - it'll only be until later today before he gets scanned anyway - it's not a huge deal :)

jediwarrior
03-09-2009, 11:01

Gina, we have Rain Rescue's van at the moment-let us know if you don't get your hands on a lead by this evening, I don't drive but I'm sure haddock won't mind popping over with a lead (there's loads in the dashboard:hihi: ) when he finishes work x

gina2007
03-09-2009, 11:18
Right, so far..

Text mummysaz and we've arranged that when OH gets in from work, im going to get him scanned at the vets. If it comes up with something, and we trace his owners, then job, hopefully, done. If not.. we're going to walk towards her work from where she found him and see if he takes us somewhere. He might just take us to his home and we can reunite. If not.. we dont have plan C yet.

Ive got a forum member going to the shops for me for some proper doggy food. She lives close to me too, bonus. I dont want my cat getting in and attacking him when im out! It'd take me 5min to the shop and back but I aint risking it!

As for the leads, if any of you could it'd be a godsend. I'd get them back to you too. And scanning, if you can get to me, again, bonus! I hope he has a chip. He looks like hes missing something or someone. Or might just be one of those dogs with them eyes that make you feel sorry for them! :D

I've got spare leads and the like too- I can't remember how close your are to me Gina. I can pop up and bring you a lead or drop the little one down to the vets for a chip check. You won't be able to PM me, but my email address is always open- the form under Help and Contact Us to contact the community manager comes to me.

03-09-2009, 12:59
I have a feeling this dog belongs to an old person ,i cant see him being chipped and he did not have a disc on his collar.Perhaps they are not able to take him out and just letting him out on the front for a roam around is what they do ,not saying they should do this of course but perhaps they have no option.

Lotti
03-09-2009, 13:15
It could be fleas, or it could be anal glands...

My sister's staying at the moment and is allergic to flea bites... so may not be such a good idea for us to have him...

In years gone by everyone let their dog walk the streets. It was the done thing, only recently is it different so if this owner is old then it may be the norm to them aswel.

Hello everyone.

He is back home now. Went with moonbird to meet Mummysaz and he was so good on the bus apart from another dog got on and he wasnt so good... But all ended good.

Walked to its rightful home, he knew where he lived because he turned onto the steps just as we got to it without us slowing down or telling him. I hope it doesnt happen again, because next time as alot are saying it might not be a happy ending. It was only by chance another forummer looked at this thread and called me to confirm some details, it ended up as their friend of a friends dog... otherwise it'd probably have ended up in the pound or rehomed here :(

Animal welfare havent called me back even though they said they would at tea time!

Thanks to everyone, Saz who got him in the first place, lotti for passing on the message, Nikita for bringing him to me, Nikki_red for the food and finally moonbird for the lead, and I will PM you now Moon to get it back to you.

Glad it ended up a happy story!

Thats sad :( I nearly picked what I thought was a stray dog up today. I stopped the car, got my spare lead out and had it to check for a tag (in had none) only to notice it was barking at a gate. I guessed it must belong to the house as it had road sense and seemed to know where it wanted to go dispite being pretty blind so I started to knock on the door.

The next moment a bloke across the road came out and said it belongs to the house next to the one I was knocking on and that it takes itself for a little wander up and down the pavement and sometimes the gate shuts behind it and it can't get back in so I opened the gate and left it in the driveway :)

It was a lovely old thing, blind as a bat, that knew it's way around. I suppose people have different boundaries, his is the pavement on the side of road his house is on. My old dog lived in a garden wth no fences/ gates and never went any further then the garden boundaries whatever happened around her. My present dog does not try to escape or ever run out but would accidently drift out of the gate without noticing if it was left open. Personally I could not ever let my own dog to wander off my property.

The dog your talking about seems an accident waiting to happen :(

mine i dident have a fence on when i moved in myhouse last year, my lab never ran out, just stayed on the driveway and if she did go out of the garden it was only to have a sniff just outside the gates lol, but my newer girl, she dosent run off but ashe does wander around the road as she did when she once got out, the only prob is she goes on ppls gardens not just on the road, so i cant and dont let mine out only on the green to play with the local kids, but this dog has been roaming years but often i have seen it dodge cars and nealy get hit poor mite, seems a happy lil soul tho

This makes me really, really cross. Sorry but it does. I know everyone has different boundaries as you say Evei and people have different values but as a motorist, this really gets to me.

Not only does it put the dog at risk but it puts unnecessary pressure on motorists as well as risking the lives of motorists when one swerves to miss the unaccompanied dog.

It gets me the same when people let tiny kids run along the edge of the pavement well ahead of them.

I know people will say it's the same with cats but I have to say, whilst there's always the chance of swerving to avoid a cat and causing a collision in the 4/5 years I've been driving I think I've only actually had to slow down for a cat two or three times because they will run out but they have much better road sense in general, than dogs. I've had to stop/swerve/slow down for dogs more often and even when walking I've had to stop motorists who haven't seen a small dog in the road.

Considering there are fewer dogs out than there are cats, if you find you have more experience of swerving dogs there must be a problem they must be worse on the roads than cats!

I just think it's incredibly selfish of people to get a dog that they can't be arsed to walk so they just let it out and put the onus on local motorists.

Great. Well, im not walking it home again. Why cant people just keep them inside, and walk them with a lead? Or put them on the garden, thats fenced off?

Great isnt it. You go out of your way to help someone, even take the dog back to its home, and they still let it out.

I havent even got the words to describe how this P'es me off!

I know just how you feel Gina, it's a sad state of affairs when other people care more about the dogs safety than it's owners do, perhaps they dont really deserve the dog at all what a shame!

Did you point the owner in the direction of this thread? Maybe it will make her appreciate how much you all did to ensure the poor pooch got home safely. Still - if that was my dog i'd definately be keeping a closer eye on it!

I think the owner is an elderly person.

I think the owner is an elderly person.

And whilst I understand it may be harder to walk a dog it's a bit unfair to expect it to walk itself :( It sounds like it's going to get hurt soon!

She wasnt elderly. Well, echoing what Saz said really. She still didnt try to bring the dog back in, when it ran back out! She let it on the garden whilst me and Saz were stood there.

 Can you get done for picking up a dog off the streets? :hihi:

I really would. The road isn't a busy one, but people fly up and down there at stupid speeds. :( Someone else, who pointed us in the direction of his home, had shown her this thread. Sort of person that wouldnt give a chuff. Seemed bothered though when we went back, for about 30seconds.

Well if thats the case she should be reported before he walks into the road again and causes an accident, they dont deserve him he is a lovely old thing.

It's actually a criminal offence to 'allow a dog to roam'. Which is exactly what this woman is doing.

Perhaps a call to the police to inform them of what has happened and that she allows it out all the time? Whilst we all know that the police aren't particularly interested in dogs, it is a road hazard and like I say, the woman is breaking the law.
