You're so old! No-one has anything to say to each other these days that cannot be conveyed via the medium of txt msgs, facebook status updates or three-letter-abbreviations LOL! If those fail one can also apparently encode one's entire personality by combining fashion labels.

Bars have to play music at astonishingly high levels to cover the awkward silences that would otherwise ruin everybody's night. Since what I once knew as 'courting' has been reduced, seemingly, to the phrase 'Do you do a turn?' there is no need to provide an environment in which conversation can take place.

Get with the program, daddio!

(Sorry I can't be any help)

Try going to a real pub and not something that's pretending to be one?
The Bath Hotel, Fagans, that kind of thing.

For the first time ever as I recall, I agree with one of your posts!

Try the hotel at Leopold Square, it's not cheap but not noisy or full of meat heads being served with plastic cups.

The Green Room is nice, or Devonshire Cat

Apart from the patrons who have been drinking since 11am singing and then glassing you.

If you used to like All Bar One, it depends on how your tastes in bars has moved on over the years but try one of....

Popolos, Leopold Square
Devonshire Cat, Wellington Street
Trippets, Trippet Lane
Old House, Division Street
Bungalows & Bears, Division Street
University Arms, Brook Hill
Wig & Pen, Campo Lane

Does it have to be in the city centre?

Have you thought of somewhere like the Milestone or Riverside in the Kelham Island area, which is now very different to 16 years ago!

Perhaps the Hillsborough Hotel? Or the new look Champs on Ecclesall Road.

Or heading further out, the Cricket Inn at Totley?

Some of us prefer places where the beer isn't flat and the company don't compare their new oversized exhaust pipe.

Where is witherspoons?

It is a place beyond your wildest dreams, where beer flows like a waterfall in return for the pennies chucked into it by well wishers. But the greatest thing of all is the REAL people who frequent it, with their happiness and problems openly showing.

It is near a closed down boozer near you!

Sounds like Wetherspoons to me.

Yeah when it eventually comes! Takes about 3 hours for a burger, wouldn't find but everything is only re-heated anyway!

Everything is microwaved bar the burgers and steaks. Longest I've waited is 15 minutes.

I once went with my Mum and we both ordered chilli and rice (microwaved), 1 hour and twenty minutes and still no sign after we'd already complained once.

Is that the same place as the aforementioned 'witherspoons' and Wetherspoons?

It's a bit like Milton Keynes that place. It's perfectly functional, but not somewhere you'd go for pleasure. I can't believe so many people are suggesting it as a somewhere one might want to go for the ambiance to people who aren't making some sort of documentary.

It's a sad reflection on how many pubs have closed.
