Hey folks,

Just wondering if anyone could gimme a bit of a heads up on what the place is like, does it get busy, is it expensive etc etc

Cheers,

Did not know it was a rock bar, would be interested to know if it's a good night out.

Do you mean the Pomona at the junction of Ecclesall Road and Summerfield Street? Didn't know it had been rebranded a rock bar, but then I've not been there for a bit.
Does it get busy: used to
Is it expensive: didn't used to be
It's quite a big pub, with a few pool tables. Has the bustling atmosphere of a student bar.

We got the gig through a friend, his band played there a while ago and they're on again Tomorrow with us.

He said it's a rock bar, but in all fairness he is a little clueless lol.

And yeah, it is on Ecclesall Road, we don't even know how to get there yet.
Is it walking distance from the bus station?

cheers

Walking distance - yes. Walking distance carrying an amp - unsure :-)

Haha, it's ok, our drummers taking my amp in the car, i've got got a gig bag and pedal board ;-)

Cheers for that though, it's helpful to know we won't need taxi money lol

If you are getting there from the bus station I'd get a bus. Services 65/80/85/86/214/240/272.

they tend to put (rockish) local bands on every friday, some of them quite good. i think its makes for a nice venue, if you like the band you can sit close to the stage, if you dont like the band you can sit at the back and have a nice chat with friends, without feeling like your being rude to the band.

It isn't a rock bar but they have all sorts of bands on. They have plenty of offers so cheap deals for drink AND food. Staff are always good and quick too. No I don't work there or have shares but if I lived closer I would go more

No it certainly is not. There are only TWO rock bars in Sheffield, being us at the Dove, and the Nelson. We are the only full time rock pubs/bars in Sheffield.

The Pomona is a live music venue, a bit like West Street live.....

Staff are always good and quick too.I might visit again then. I stopped going a couple of years ago mainly as the service was so bad.

Err, noooo, think they only have live music a couple of times a week where as WSL has it 7 nights a week...

Couldn't agree more, The Pomona is a pub that occassionaly puts on music when it suits them as a business. WSL is a purpose built live music venue and couldn't be further removed from the 'pub with a PA' business model that many struggling pubs and bars (that wouldn't otherwise have live music on and are not really suitable for it) are turning to on an irregular basis in an effort to increase trade in the midst of this harsh economic climate.

Well said Jared. A lot of pubs/bars seem to think all they can do is stick in a cheap sound system and clear a corner of the pub, maybe put up a rope in front of it, and then call it, somewhat unfairly, a 'stage', and then they are a 'live music venue'.

I don't believe a pub can be called a live music venue in the true sense unless, 1) They have a purpose built 'proper' stage, ie a RAISED area from the floor and not just a cleared space with a token rope in front of it...2) A permanent PA system/mixer/utilities and accessories dedicated to live music usage and not a 'mobile disco' set up that is packed away each night or a couple of tinny speakers hung on a nail on the wall....3) Have regular bands and be known as a 'venue' on the band circuit(s) locally and beyond rather than 'that pub putting on a band'....4)Have a dedicated sound engineer who manages the output of the band, rather than a band who brings all their own PA and just plays 'unmanageably' from the token 'stage'.

Having said that, have not been in the Pomona for a bout 8 years, so have no idea if they have any of the aforementioned fixtures....I don't remember them having a stage before though..
