View Full Version : No lifts in city centre shops !!
I prefer to shop in town BUT since having my daughter 5 months ago , i find it difficult to shop.
Usually it's not too bad but today it really got on my nerves.....
I went to meet my brother and i wanted to go in next to buy some clothes for my little girl ...NO lift and the childrens dept is downstairs ..which smart alec thought of that !!!
I also went in burtons on the moor again no lift, if i was on my own i couldnt have shopped in next as my daughter had only just gone gone to sleep so i wouldnt have gone down each step with the pram as it would have woken her .
I thought all shops had to provide a lift for wheelchair users ?
Has anyone else had any problems it does my head in !!
If only we had some decent shops in town to put some lifts into.
But back to subject surely you should expected there would be a lack of lifts in town. The trouble with people now adays is they want everything to easy.
candystick 23-07-2005, 21:29 I completely simpathise with you on this subject. You would think retailers would have realised by now that it would benefit a majority of the customers if the childrens department was on the ground floor, i love shopping in primark but the kids dept is on the top floor, (yes i know there is a lift in primark)but you have to wait for ever. I once waited 5mins for it to arrive on the floor i was on then couldn't get in as there was no room, it went to the groound floor then came back up full again so i gave up and went to ethel austin instead.
I tend to do my shopping at meadowhall if i have to take the kids on my own.

Not really, no.
Have you tried dragging a pram up and down a flight of 30 stairs? Fun, isn't it?
Thanks to equal access policies for the disabled, many shops do have lifts.
My advice to mer1002 is to shop elsewhere!
Boots on Fargate has a lift...just as well, because the baby section is upstairs!
Mothercare at the top of Fargate has a lift and proper baby feeding and changing facilities.

Oh yes, Primark!
I once waited over 15 minutes for that lift to take me back down from the childrens section to the ground floor!
I realise that it's difficult to put lifts in Primark due to the strange location on a nasty hill... the Primark at Meadowhell can't open soon enough!

Still only a rumour at the moment...!
They may be moving into the space vacated by Sainsbury's recently.
Edit - they may be moving into the space where Allders was.
Check out this link from February this year:
Shop chains snap up Allders sites (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4263709.stm)
Primark purchased the Allders store at Meadowhall.
The plot thickens :suspect:

boots are extending into alders apparetnly and they not want a primark in meadowhall as its a cheap shop... not gospel but i know some of the plans....
i have baby and find it hard shoppin too but i understand why some shops do this.... people with prams steal, not all of them obviously but some of them do and its easy for them with the pram... i have seen it done by all sorts of people so maybe this is a reason.
carcrash 24-07-2005, 02:18 The lifts would take up valuble floor space and these companies profits would fall.

They don't want Primark in meadowhall because it's cheap?
But the whole left side of Meadowhall is full of cheap shops.
Chav sports shops, Poundland, Argos, mobile phone stores...
I reckon a Primark would lift the tone of the place :D
karenjane39 24-07-2005, 07:45 The Next shop down Chapel Walk is only for children and only on one level so try there. They have a much wider choice of stuff too.
I have a little one in a buggy and to be honest haven't found town too much of a problem with lifts. There was only one shop (Evans) that didn't have a lift and they offered to look after the buggy while I went downstairs. Granted that's not an option if you've a sleeping baby in the pram!
x_LoUiSe_x 24-07-2005, 09:23 id love a primark in meadowhall!! its too mins away from my house n i hate meadowhall for my lil girls clothes coz the only kids shops are next, adams, mothercare ect n they are too expensive! its really awkward getting into town so a primark at meadowhall would be fantastic!
x_LoUiSe_x 24-07-2005, 09:24 p.s is alders in meadowhall? i thought it was on the retail park? where toyrus is?

No, Alders in Meadowhall shut ages ago... There is an Aldi on the Retail Park though, it's probably that you're thinking of.
sugarnspice 24-07-2005, 09:44 I know exactly what you mean mer1002. It's even worse if you have a double buggy, you can't even get through the door of a lot of shops at all.
drolnhoj 24-07-2005, 21:45 Debenhams on The Moor has lifts!
I feel sympathy for small shopkeepers who maybe cannot afford to rush and get in all the adaptations for making their premises more accessible, though I've heard they can get financial help with this? But I have no sympathy whatsoever with chain stores which still have not got access sorted out and I hope they run foul of the legislation. It's not just people with prams but also people using wheelchairs, crutches etc. I once managed to get up the stairs in a city centre shop but couldn't get back down again without sliding down on my backside. I then decided to use Meadowhell instead while I couldn't walk, and they couldn't have been more helpful. :)
Sorry to upset you primark fans but my brother is a shopfitter and is working on the old allders site , heres the deal.....
boots is extending and will close downstairs , but because allders was huge there splitting it in half and the other half will be new look (cant see how that will work myself)
but the primark contract fell through , so i dont know what new look will be ?
Thanks for all your replys i havent found town too much of a problem i was just having a day when all the stores i went in didnt have lifts !!
I feel sorry for wheelchair users who cant shop correctly..scandalous .
littleboo 26-07-2005, 22:04 just to let you know that Next have a childrens shop on one level just around the corner on Chaple walk.
most people forget about this shop. but it has a far better range than the pokey fargate childrens dungeon.
Aint going to be a Primark at Meadowhall .... that idea kicked in the teeth a few months ago .................
