ABOUT AXOLOTLS

Axolotls are a large aquatic salamander only found in parts of Mexico. They can grow to approx 30cm (12in) and will live for approx 12 years in captivity. Axolotls are studied around the world, due to their ability to regenerate a new fully functional limb within two months of losing it.

AXOLOTL AQUARIUM/HABITAT

A good set up for one adult Axolotl would consist of a 2ft aquarium (3ft aquarium for two, 4ft aquarium for four). Only Axolotls of similar sizes should be housed together. Avoid keeping Axolotls with any other species (including fish).

The water should be around 10-20 C (50-68 F). Decorate the aquarium with a mixture of plastic plants and oxygenating plant, with some hiding spots. However, don’t over crowd your set up - give your Axolotl plenty of space. Try and keep your set-up out of direct sun light (as Axolotls don’t have eyelids and are sensitive to too much light).

You can use an internal water filter to help keep the water clean (keeping in mind Axolotls like the water relatively still). Weekly cleaning of pebbles/plants and a partial water change is recommended. Remember, do not use water straight from the tap, treat it or let it stand for 48hrs before introducing to your aquarium. Avoid using any size gravel/substrate that can be swallowed; it can be fatal.

FEEDING YOUR AXOLOTL

A good variety is the key to a healthy Axolotl diet. They should be regularly fed on Earth worms (chopped if too large), slugs and other insects (woodlice etc.). Occasional treats such as pellets, prawns and pinkies can also be fed (they’ll try and eat pretty much anything that will fit in their mouth).

Adult Axolotls should be fed every few days, where as juvenile Axolotls ideally need feeding a small amount daily.
