my xbox 360 has started freezing just after i turn it on. It doesn't seem to make any difference if the disc is in or not. There is sometimes a little flicker of a kinda red checkered pattern as it freezes. Anyone got any idea what the problem is and if/where/how much i can get it fixed for in sheff? Hope you can help, cheers.

most rrod kits dont last for too long....could try tightening the bolts up a bit more
or getting some better quality thermal paste and do it again..

Thanks for all advice. My Xbox is out of warranty so dunno how much use it'd be sending it back, that's why I was wondering about fixers in Sheffield. Can they be successfully repaired after RRoD? Any tips for cleaning fans - I tried blowing into the back but not sure how effective it'd be. It seems kinda rubbish, I've only had it around 16 months and am not a heavy user. Didn't realise Xboxes were so temperamental...

so you had it longer than 3 years
personally i would just go buy a new arcade unit its that cheap now
If you only has it 16 month it's a free repair from Microsoft

My 8month old xbox 360 suffered a similar fate before dying. After speaking to a nice man in India I was informed that mine wasn't a rrod. Upon checking it was a 1/4 rrod, still fatal but apparantly not covered by microsofts extended warranty. Top tip, learning punjabi can work wonders for your phone bill. Thank goodness Blockbuster swapped it.

Hi, it's the first signs of RROD. It needs a hot air re-work and x-clamp fix.

We do this for £30 including a 30day warranty. We give a 30day warranty as we have a 97% success rate.
(We use a re-work station and our own custom x-clamp kit unlike some people who wrap it in a towel! lol)

If you've any q's, let us know!

Thanks.

Have PM'd you.

Send it back to Microsoft. You have a 3 year warranty on it. If you get pay someone needlessly to do it for you, it means if it goes again during the 20 months more that you warranty runs for they won't touch it as you've had it opened up.

i'd heard they had a 3 year warranty too but rang microsoft and was told it was over a year old so out of warranty. They did kindly offer to take ut away and have a look for 90 quid tho. I'm actually shocked that they can sell something so clearly shoddy and then have such poor aftersales care. Like i said, i'm not even a heavy user. Feel pretty ripped off and it looks like its gonna be cheaper and easier to get it fixed here.

Does it have 3 red rings on it?

Don't take it apart. Don't pay a 3rd party to fix it. It IS still under the RROD warranty.
Red ring of death is when 3 of the 4 light surrounding the power button are red. You may also get an 'E74' error message instead. Even if you have not seen either of these there is still hope for you.
My xbox 360 recently started showing very odd graphical errors. This is a video I made of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPkdx1lNkCs

It never showed the RROD and only briefly showed the E74 message once. I called microsoft and told them I had seen the E74 message along with the graphical errors. They sent out a courier to pick it up and they delivered it back to me fixed within 2 weeks.
As I said, don't take it apart yourself and don't pay anyone else to fix it. Just send it microsoft and tell them you have seen the E74 message or RROD (this is a very common problem so they won't know if you bend the truth :D )

There is a 6 year warranty for electrical goods in UK.

Just because MS self-imposed 3 year warranty runs out doesn't mean you have to pay to get it fixed after 3 years.

It is up to you to prove that it was faulty went you bought it by getting a report stating it was inherently faulty at the time of sale, then the shop has to replace / repair it.

They will drag their feet refusing to do anything about it until you put a small claims in for the cost of the repair and they will lose given that ROD is well documented.

In fact, I don't think anyone should be going direct to MS for repairs because doing so could well void your contract with the shop you bought it from since it not the same condition they sold it to you.

You should take it back to the shop and let them send it to MS.

My son's xbox has started freezing just aftewr start up, regardless of the game that is in. As a test, we unplugged the wired 'live' lead connected to mywireless router and the damn thing works. So..... he can play his games but can't go online to play them. Any suggestions why this would be????

I had this happen to me last night... It seems that it happens when a download fails. I was downloading the "birth of a spartan" video and it didn't complete. This morning, when I tried to turn on the xbox when connected to live, I guess it tries to continue the download but fails.

To fix it, I unplugged the network cable, started up the xbox 360 without connecting to live and then went into settings and memory and just deleted the partially downloaded film. Then when I restart the xbox 360 with the network cable pugged in, it connects to live, but does not try to download it anymore so it all seems to work fine.

I've since downloaded the "birth of a spartan" film and the second time it completed successfully and I can now disconnect and reconnect to live without any issues.

Hope this helps,

Mark.
