View Full Version : What type of books do you normally read? robbie 23-07-2005, 14:56 I read all sorts but the main books I read tend to be Fantasy books. It's just an escape from depressing reality really :D How about you? Litha 23-07-2005, 15:03 can we have none of the above as a option :D i read mind body and spirit pagany sorts of books robbie 23-07-2005, 15:17 wouldn't they count under non-fiction?;) Litha 23-07-2005, 15:21 well in that case thats what ive voted :D i never thought of that :loopy: Rich 23-07-2005, 17:58 I tend to read a bit of sci-fi, Star Wars etc.. As well as computer programming etc based books.. I'm interested in doing a programming course at College but although I've done MS Visual Basic at Sheffield Hallam about 2 years ago, I don't have the required entry qualifications for any other courses :( madowl 24-07-2005, 19:31 i like to read horror books, your imagination can be much better than any top horror movie....... drolnhoj 24-07-2005, 21:39 Reading alot of Shffield history books lately but also reading criminal biographies like Pretty Boy Roy Shaw, Lennie McLean etc. carcrash 25-07-2005, 03:06 I seem to have got into a habit of reading biogs. Mostly musical or political ones. My other half has brought the da vinci code and is trying to get me to read that Carmine 25-07-2005, 09:39 Ecclectic reading seems to me to be the key! I've read biographies, fiction, non-fiction, humour, politics, fantasy, historical, graphic novels, classics and quite a few other things over the years as the mood has taken me. While I think that it's good to have a recommendation, does anyone else worry that we all rush to read the next Harry Potter or Da Vinci Code...are we being led away from discovering our own preferences when it comes to reading material? davem 25-07-2005, 11:16 In the last couple of months I've read the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (15th century), The Anatomy of Melancholy (16th century) & I'm now working my way through a collection of Lord Dunsany's fantasy short stories. I'm also involved in a chapter by chapter read through of Lord of the Rings on the Barrowdowns forum. My 'library' has everything from SF/fantasy through poetry, biography, history, psychology, science & theology/mysticism to Paganism & ritual magic. I wouldn't say I 'normally' read any particular genre of books. I do tend to avoid whatever's in the bestseller lists, though. I read the first four HP books but haven't bothered with the rest. What annoys me is the way readers of 'fantasy' fiction are dismissed as somehow 'stupid' & need to grow up & read 'serious' books. Some fantasy - Tolkien's works. Ursula le Guin's Earthsea novels, etc, are as well written & thought provoking as any of the 'serious' works we adults are supposed to read - I have 'classics' on my shelves from Spenser & Shakespeare through George Elliot, Tolstoy, Emily Bronte to Hesse & Heller & I wouldn't hesitate to rank Tolkien, Mervyn Peake & Philip K Dick, etc, amongst them. Tracie 25-07-2005, 11:20 I went for modern fiction, but I quite like biographies / autobiographies too. Ultimately however, I'll with Carmine on this one - I tend to read quite eclectically and I don't really favour one genre over any other :) Edd 25-07-2005, 11:56 "Mucky" wasnt an option in the poll (or does that come under 'fantasy'? :P ) I read mostly historical stuff. I was into ancient history for a while, but a great book about the history of the Inquisition (of which our newest pope was the most recent leader!) that i bought at an airport sometime got me into medieval european history, which fascinates me still. Mathom 25-07-2005, 17:32 I'll read just about anything that takes my 'fancy' - but I do like a damn good novel, and I also have a bit of a preference for history, poetry, and popular science. Stuff I've read lately? Starter For Ten, Millennium People, the new Harry Potter, Dorothy Wordsworth's diaries, Histories of Middle earth, The Year 1000, B*llocks to Alton Towers, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, Vernon God Little. I've a stack of books waiting to be read, but alas I've been on Amazon and have been tempted by some more. |
