View Full Version : You're Beautiful , James Blunt: What a fab song!
Don_Kiddick 22-07-2005, 19:08 Caught it a couple of times now on TMF, like the video too.
Don't buy much 'pop' music these days being a trainee old fart but I'm off to ASDA on Saturday & am gonna invest in this one!
Anyone else like it?
The cut or the uncut version? yes its a top song :)
You can get the album (Back To Bedlam) for about £7:99 now Don_Kiddick. It's very impressive IMO. Well worth a few quid off anyone
PS. I've already started hearing another one of the tracks on the radio. I wonder if this will be his next release?
Yeah, I love it. Great voice, great tune, nice lyrics.
Saw him at the Arena last year when he supported Elton John, and I can confirm that he sounds just as good live as he does on the album, which I bought earlier this year off CDWow.

:o :o :o :o :o Can't play that to my boy! :o
its a damn fine album imo
northernboy 23-07-2005, 10:36 Didn't he also do that song about "Those three wise men have got a semi by the sea"?
What was THAT all about??
That's the song the radio stations are starting to play now. I wonder if it's his next release? (Radio edit obviously)
csymeonides 23-07-2005, 20:02 I don't get it - is the "uncut" version (where he says "f**king" instead of "flying") the original one? It sounds like a weird thing to say, doesn't really fit in with the rest of the song. "Flying" actually makes more sense! When I first heard the "uncut" version I thought it was someone else dubbing over it for a laugh.
The album has been out for 9 months now so i think the radio edit will be the latest version. I think both versions work.
Don_Kiddick 25-07-2005, 06:42 Well I bought the 'radio edit' ;)
I also bought the Coldplay album - cos me lad likes 'speed of sound' AND I bought Greenday wake me up when September ends...
It's like being a teenager again!
Haven't bought so much in ages :D
Tubthump 25-07-2005, 13:27 I was actually starting to wonder who in they're right mind would shell out their hard earned cash for this cynically "hear-felt", record company exec box ticking, sopping, soulless, agrophobic-housewife/ ex Simply Red fan demographic fulfilling effluence and I stumbled across this thread.
Please, please, please, please tell me you're all taking the p*ss. You are aren't you? Ha ha ha very funny. You had me going there for a minute....
Tubthump 25-07-2005, 13:36 And his voice. Going for the Damien Rice meets singer from Maroon Five are we? How very astute, you'll hoodwink the kiddies as expected, but you might snare yourselves a few Telegraph readers en-route. Oh look he swears as well! Man, he's so gritty. His songs can't possibly be accused of insipid bland balladry by numbers because he uses the "f-word", and everyone knows it's cool to swear.
It goes without saying that you can't claim to be a real fan unless you buy both "radio" and "street" edit.
its totally crap....too ballady and mushy and all he keeps saying is 'ur beautiful, ur beautiful,ur beautiful' how boring is that?
and his song goes to number one? the world has gone insane and lost its gud taste of music!
Don_Kiddick 25-07-2005, 18:23 ahh go on yer miserable bleeders :D
Tell us what you like then so we can critise back :P

since its so bad why not tell us what cynical Indie rubbish you like so we can laugh at you ;)
Jesus wept... it's the most boring song!
CherryNicole 25-07-2005, 20:39 I really like the back to bedlam album and i thought he was amazing when i saw him at glastonbury. My fav songs are high, wisemen and billy. I like (for want of a better word) the swearing in the song high....i think it works.
and while the topic has been brought up i always like 'indie rubbish' :D
In the begining bit of the song when he first sings, it sounds like he comes in too early, and then starts singing again at the right point. Anyone else notice this?

The unedited unreleased version actually went something like this> #My life is brilliant.... "Oh shoot! I came in a bit too early guys, could you maybe just edit that bit out?" Guy on desk > "Yea sure, *cough wonker cough*"
dseferta 26-07-2005, 09:41 Agree, I love the song too
I think is another one of those "forgetable" ones. In three years you won't even remember the guys name. The word I would use is mediocre.
Now crazy frog, that is REAL music... :hihi:
I thought this song sounded familiar, then the other day Toby (Foster) pointed out that the first few bars of this song are the theme tune to "The Incredible Hulk".....
i must admit ive never heard any of his stuff but i will check out the album at some point this week , there was also a very interesting article about him in the times last saturday in the interview he comes across as a decent chap
Don_Kiddick 26-07-2005, 17:20 The missus says he was on GMTV or summink - he used to be in the army aparrently!

When i first heard the song a few months ago i thought it sounded like the jurassic park theme tune :P

If i remember rightly the army runs all the way through his family. It is a great tradition for his family. James joined the army and did very well but decided to leave and start a career in music.
His website has the full story.

Funny you should say that, when I first heard the song I though it was the soundtrack to the Exorcist until I realised it was actually just the sound of me violently vomiting into a bucket, my body convulsing and rejecting every earful as it would had I attempted to digest a double-decker sh*t sandwich.
I'm still waiting for the detractors to post their favourite current albums.
I'm geting the feeling of the hatred for James Blunt has less to do with the quality of the album but more about the agressive promotion (he's on the side of a bus for christ sakes)and high airplay.
I got this on pre-order on a recommendation after listening to a couple of his songs on his website.
I can understand why people would be fed up with the overexposure but cannot understand about the hatred of the song.
I'm sure that if he was an unfound talent who was big in indie circles a lot of music snobs would love him.
It seems that we have a habit in this country of hating anyone who is succesful. It wouldn't happen anywhere else.

I see your point, but I genuinely detested this song from the first moment I heard it, before I even knew who it was by. I am surprised you like this Robbie as, on other threads, I seem to be in agreement with almost all of your cultural recommendations. To answer your point(s):
1) I'm not a fan of The Kaiser Chiefs
2) Favourite album of the year: Arcade Fire- Funeral
3) You're totally right, we love to knock down success stories in this country. However, there is no way in a million and one years, "music snob" that I am, I would ever like this song whether he was an "unfound" (ahem) "talent" or the multi-unit shifting chart topper he is. I judge music by what affect it has on me, signed or unsigned.
4) I'm sure, as well as being quite good looking, that he is a very nice boy. But, for me, he is the epitome of bland. The middle ground. The safe option. He is saying nothing, he is emoting nothing and deep down when he's singing "you're beautiful" I bet he feels absolutely nothing.
fair point. However, you see very knowledgeable in the whole entertainment spectrum. A lot of people will just post or say a short slagging off comment.
As for Funeral. I've had it since its release in the States. It is very good but I do think its overhyped from the likes of Pitchfork.
I can understand the bland comment. When I was in my teens I'd have probably said the same thing. However, as I've got older my tatses have moved.
James Bland - sorry, Blunt.
Music that sounds like Dido with a willie.
If anybody wants a go at me, the last 3 albums I bought;
Roisin Murphy - Ruby Blue
White Stripes - Get Behind Me
Gorillaz - Demon Days

Have him committed. They'll give him a quick full frontal lobotomy and he'll be right as rain in a couple of weeks.

fnkysknky 08-10-2005, 11:39 Noticed this thread a bit late but it's 'cool' to dislike James Blunt :)
Personally I like the album - singles have been overplayed on the radio but that happens a lot nowadays. Some good songs about the grim stuff he got to see while in Kosovo.
sugarnspice 08-10-2005, 11:42 It actually seems to be growing on me after all this time, which is so very odd. The video's good. And if anyone sang it to me, I would marry them. :help: :loopy: :suspect:

Personally I think the video is hideous. Any promo that features the singer seductively peeling off his clothing, pouting as he mouths his bloated, meaningless guff to his three-albums-a-year audience currently distracted by the new Jamie Cullum & Katie Mella releases- deserves to be treated with no regard whatsoever. To say "it's cool not to like James Blunt at the minute" is giving him way too much respect. There is nothing cool about him in the slightest, not even in hating him. His music is indicative of the New Wave of blandorama that is scourging the airwaves like a cantankerous wart. If anyone sang it to me in earnest, I would probably kill myself.

Well that made me laugh. I don't actually want to like it at all. Not normally my thing whatsoever. It has infected me somehow. :hihi:
Pseudonym 08-10-2005, 21:46 Listening to Jimmy B. on Parkinson at the moment... I have to ask...
Is he a castrato? ... He sure as hell sounds like one!
sugarnspice 08-10-2005, 21:47 I've got it! I think I just need to feel beautiful! :suspect: :o :P
the_rudeboy 08-10-2005, 21:56 Not my usual type of stuff..........but......in my humble opinion the whole album is superb. :)
I said earlier in this thread that i like this song and i like the album. Since then people have come on posting what albums they have bought recently and slagged James Blunt off at the same time.
Does this make you all trendy in some way? Why not just post saying you don't like it?
Well i better get with the trendy people out there.
We've just bought:
Scissor Sisters: Hit singles
Black eyed peas: Elephunk
Blur: The best of
Ministry of sound: Back to the old skool
And, the ultimate reggae album
Ohhhh, the trendyness is just flooding in :suspect:
They were not trying to be 'trendy'. as Robbie and a few other people challenged people who had slagged off James Blunt to say what music and artists they liked, people did. they werent trying to be trendy...so there! ....:P
I like the song, it's going to be a great songs for weddings etc. Shame he's still skint though - heard on the radio that he's not going to get any royalties until next year ...
Where have I been for the last few weeks?
I heard it for the first time yesterday, not knowing who was singing or who the singer was until the DJ said at the end.
I have to admit that I thought it was lovely!
Nice little romantic number.
Recent acquisitions:
Franz Ferdinand
Goldfrapp
