If I connected my modem to the PC with the USB cable rather than the current Ethernet, will there be a drop in speed? I would like to do this because it would allow me to play online on the PS2 via the modem while it was still connnected to the internet. I know this will cause a loss of speed but it would save a lot of hassle thanks :thumbsup:

P.S I have a 2Mb connection and the modem has a USB port and Ethernet

well i have a router and my partner uses the USB connection and i use the ethernet and i dont think theres any difference to be honest.

i dont think you'll notice all that much difference...

USB was designed for connecting low-speed peripherals such as keyboards, printers and scanners.

Depends on the spec of your pc as to whether its a good idea having a usb modem. The whole ATM layering and TCP/IP is done on the USB host, your PC. Your CPU speed influences the performance of the USB modem. Also other programs that need CPU are decreasing the performance of the USB modem. Other USB devices also take bandwidth from the USB-bus and this influences the performance of the USB modem.

As for the ps2, theoretically it would be better via ethernet, as you would have better latency, but if its your only option to use the usb then go for it :) at worst you'll notice a little speed drop.

I wouldn't be too concerned either way unless your a serious gamer. If your that bothered i'd get an ethernet adapter for your ps2 (if it doesnt have an ethernet port), or see if you can get the router working thru the ps2 usb.

I already have the ethernet adaptor for the PS2, but the modem is also connected to the computer via ethernet which is the only way that you can get online with a PS2. I am running a Pentium 4HT at 3.4GHz, and i think it has an 800MHz bus so it should be OK right?

can u not use the usb port on the ps2?, i used to use a usb v90 modem with mine years ago.

If the worst comes to the worst just swap the ethernet cable whenever you want to play online on the ps2.

Yeah thats what I do now, but that means I have to reset the modem everytime and roll up the cables and all that so I just thought that it would be easier. I dont think that the PS2 is set up for online play via USb, it doesnt mention anything about it when setting up the initial connection

Broadband < 8Mbits/second - so all connections are more than quick enought to cope without loosing any speed.

thats presuming theres no external factors other than the possible speeds of data transfer.

EG - if the device has to do lots of work for a usb modem which is also draining resources from the host device.

But yeah, either solution shouldn't be all that noticable.

that about sums it up, your internet connection will be the bottle neck.
Ethernet will use less processor time than usb though, so might make a slight difference.

cat5e = gigabit upto 10 meters
cat6 = gigabit upto 100 meters

Only theoretical tho, i have cat5e running gigabit at way over 10 meters.

Just get an ethernet hub\switch. You can pick them up for well under a tenner and you can then use the ethernet on the PS2 an PC simultaneously.
