Shelley1650 04-12-2003, 21:55 Just wondering if anyone watched the documentary on south yorkshire's traffic dept. tonight.
Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the issues raised...

I watched it. What issues do you mean exactly? That there are a lot of brainless idiots in South Yorkshire?
Shelley1650 05-12-2003, 08:31 yep, just general issues about car crime etc on the roads of South Yorkshire.
Also, the fact that on last weeks episode it said something along the lines of '35 uninsured cars are recovered every day in South Yorkshire' and 'in the housing estates 1 in three cars will have no tax or insurance' - this suprised me very much. Can this really be true?
What does 'in the housing estates' mean exactly? Are they saying the council estates?
Shelley1650 05-12-2003, 10:48 I think they implied that, but didn't say it directly as 'council estates', All they said were 'housing estates' I think. The Manor estate seemed to be one of the focus points of that episode, but that would only be a snapshot of this issue as it was a half an hour episode.
Sorry for the confusion.

I assume housing estates means those estates which used to be council estates but can no longer be called that as a proportion are owner occupied.
Does that sound a bit pretentious?
This programme shows Sheffield & South Yorkshire as the car crime capital of the universe.
Is Sheffield really that much worse that the rest of the country?
Did you see this related topic:

Its getting rather boring now when ever a TV programme mentions crime,"everyone " assumes the Manor to be the worst area, when in fact it is an area of re-growth with private housing being built, and very few council properties left, which is more than can be said for Wybourn,Shiregreen,Woodthorpe,Gleadless I dont think I need to carry on mentioning worse area's than the manor, what we have to put up with is Yobs coming in from other area's to cause trouble because their so well known in their own.
So it would be greatly appreciated if people tried to stop labeling
area's and realised its a National problem, and not confined to certain districts. :nono:

Well my step-dad does car repair and such - I can confirm a lot of his cars have neither tax nor insurance dedicated to the veichle but has a 'blanket' insurance type thing IIRC and all cars are on private land.
I'm not sure if this would tip the scales as it were but...

jayjay03 06-12-2003, 08:44 Good show that just makes South Yorkshire look bad.
To be honest though, wherever Traffic Cops is set (some of the previous series was in London), it makes that area look bad because thats what we want to see. We want to see people from Barnsley driving around 'rattling', we want to see a kid from Rotherham who was obviously so thick (as was his mum) that it wasn't funny. We want to see people trying to walk back to Doncaster up the Parkway cos they missed there train, and we want to see the regular numpties off the Manor Park deciding they like the look of your car thus culminating in a life or death chase across town.
If it was just the bill dishing out speeding tickets we'd get a little bored!!!
Just watched one of the new series, based in Cheshire. Boy do I think South Yorkshire Police are a professional outfit now!
The Cheshire police just ask for their jobs to be made harder, by entering into unnecesary tit for tat verbal exchanges.
And as for the 'Double white line' thing..... I thought that meant 'no overtaking' not 'stay in your own half' :suspect:
Saxon??? :( :help:
WallBuilder 17-01-2005, 23:23 I always thought the solid white line was there to tell you on no account cross over from your side of the road, okay that is usually only done when in an over taking manouvere but I suppose speeding vehicles that are going so fast that they cannot keep on their own side of the line are at fault as they've broken the white line ruling.
I've driven along that road the cat and the fiddle and it is tempting to put your foot down as the bends are deceptive and with a bit of forward observation you can see the road beyond most bends. A guy in a golf overtook me though at a ridiculous speed and I slowed down saying to my passenger that he was an accident waiting to happen. Slightly further on there was a sharp right bend and a demolished wall, the golf was in the field nose in a ditch looking very bent and with a very stressed driver standing in shock. He was lucky and as some-one else had stopped I made my exscuses and continued on my way.
I loved the Lorry driver in tights in last nights show , artic drivers all over the country will be looking out for that numpty :hihi: I bet he isn't in his gold thong this morning :o

That was quality television. But one of the traffic cops, didn't he just LOVE himself to death?
Anyway, look out at the next Greasy Vera's Truckers' Cafe. "Buy two breakfast, get a pair of 15 denier tights, free!!"

Just imagine the conversation in all the Greasy Spoon Caffs.
"What a day I've had. I've got a rattle on me manifold, I think me cylinder head gasket's on it's way out, oh and I've got a ladder in me tights"

I would bet that there is one seriously p****d off owner of a lorry who wants to have very stern words with one of his drivers, can you imagine the conversation "walk this way..ooops sorry not in those kinky boots" bless him :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
mojoworking 19-01-2005, 03:22 Last time I watched Traffic Cops the best they could come up with was a lorry driver using his mobile phone while driving, a couple of illegals walking on the hard shoulder of the M1 and an untaxed car on the Manor.
Interesting though it is to us from Sheffield, it's pretty tame stuff and far from action-packed like the US version of the show.
Maybe it simply shows how safe and crime-free Sheffield (and, in fact, most of the UK) is compared to America.
....or maybe how much more professional South Yorkshire Police are than the US cops!
The US versions of these shows clearly have dubbed sound effects.:loopy:

I wasn't implying the US versions of these type of shows are better - far from it, they're usually crass and sensationalist (if there's such a word).
But on the other hand I don't see how the fact that our crimes are (thankfully) more mundane and less serious makes the SY cops more professional.
NatalieSheff 20-01-2005, 15:24 i dont think it makes sheffield look bad at all. did you see the one where that girl gotta out of her car and stomped over to the police and his detainee and started clapping!
i love the show, also love Worlds Wildest Police Chases, i love americans :D
The bad thing about the Yorkshire one, is it shows accidents and fatals too and thats always heartbreaking
