I'm looking for a photographer to do some press/promo pics urgently. The situation is this: I've just been offered a deal (its not finalized yet) with a Berlin based Electro label and I really need some good press shots. The pics will be sent out to magazines, blogs and will probably be used as artwork on iTunes, Beatport, Juno etc. I also produce music for Red Bull/Oakleys Sponsored Free Skiers Jon Olsson and Oscar Scherlin's video Blogs so the pics may be used through that at some point too. (Check out http://www.jon-olsson.com/ and http://www.worldofoscar.com/)

I can't pay anyone for this, but it would be great experience for a student photographer etc trying to build a portfolio. You will of course be credited for your work though.

Contact me at steelcitysmith@googlemail.com as I probably wont check pm's

Don't feel like I'm having a go but: You're going to be using the photos to promote yourself and make a living but you "can't pay anyone for this"? Can't or won't?

I went shopping at Waitrose the other day, they were fine when I said rather than pay them, I'd tell all my mates I shopped there. </sarcasm>

What other profession gets asked to do stuff for nothing all the time, despite it being a very expensive business to run? I'm getting more than a bit hacked off with all the requests to work for a credit, usually by people who are being paid/earning themselves.

I usually have no qualms suggesting that people work for free or for an exchange of services. It can work out well for both parties, usually. I've worked for free in the best for select companies or promotions, and it has worked out well in the future, so i wouldn't slam working for free full-stop.

But, when it's for promoting something such as a record-label then the general gist of having the photos is to promote the label, which in turn is to promote record sales and club-nights, which in turn is to bring in enough money to either make a profit or to at least break-even then I think it's a bit rude to ask people to work for free. There must be a budget of some sort and the photography must be budgeted for.

I've no doubt though, sadly, that you'll find someone to work for you for free.

Doing free/cheap work used to be a way in for getting work and helping out others with no money, but sadly now even those who have money expect you to work for nothing and even worse people expect you to give your rights away too.

I Do not work for free, I might work for no pay but there HAS to be something worthwhile in it for me, the only free work I do is for my brothers, and thats because I get to try new set ups etc without having the hassle of arranging models.

if you want free get ur mate to take em with their point and shoot, if you want pro quality book a pro and pay. I am supprised the label isnt making you use a pro as it wont look good on their part if your pics are substandard.

Just a thought.

My main business is music photography for bands/industry/venues etc.

I have a simple motto - 'I ask, it's free - you ask, it costs'

Simples!

I would like a brand new Nikon D3. I'm afraid that I can't pay anyone for this, but it would be great experience for a student salesman to pretend to sell it to me.

General rules of life are if you can't afford it, you can't have it. It's the same for photographers with families to support and mortgages to pay.

Why isn't your record label paying for your photo sessions if you're a superstar DJ? You want professional standard shot for nothing. I'm amazed you even thought it OK to post such a request!

What's the difference between a 15" pizza and a photographer.
A 15" pizza can feed a family of four.
