u might have to bite the bullet & do it again.u can get a cheaper version of frontline from Asda that works i have 5 dogs & it's a nightmare.
do u have a cat? they readilt reinfect your home & dog 'cos thay usually wander whereas dogs are kept in the house.
persevere u should see a decline as the adults die & stop laying eggs, frontline should kill the larvae as well.

thanx willman. yeah i have got a cat. is the stuff from asda ok for pregnant dogs? one of mine is having puppies in 2 weeks thats why we went to the vets to make sure what we used was ok for her. im not sure if this is why they have got out of control cos of us been really weary of using stuff at the begining :(

we all look like we have got the lurgy :gag:

You can buy these things that are like little bombs to kill off fleas in carpets/sofas/bedding etc. You set it off and it 'gases' your room. You have to leave the room for several hours but it does work.

Remember it was expensive but stopped people running away from us looking so red and blotchy from the constant scratching.
Good luck !:)

ooo thanx sam i will have to have a go with these the kids have gone to skeggy for a few weeks so this would be a perfect time to do something like that.

the itching is driving me mad the little lad was heart broken cos he was so fed up of scratching so im glad theyve gone away for abit.

Fingers crossed there isn't a new breed of flea which is resistant to Frontline - I'm off to the vets to pick some up for the kittens in an hour or so! :)

i hope you dont get the same probs i did then rich. it was just over a week ago i did ours and we waited and waited for them to start dying but they didnt everyone we got off the dogs were still alive :(

you could be right about a new breed of flea, i know all ones bite and make you itch but these ones are leaving me with nasty blisters too :|

Frontline is supposed to be stronger than the Asda stuff - that's why it's prescription only, Litha. So if you've tried Frontline, the asda stuff isn't likely to give you any joy, plus you may be overdosing the dog by applying this too soon after the Frontline (I think it's six weeks between applications)

I've never had an infestation, so I'm sorry I can't offer more advice :(

Litha we had the same problem earlier in the year - we have 2 dogs and a cat. Is your house carpeted throughout or do you have any rooms with wooden floors or laminate floors. We finally seem to have conquered it now but it took a few weeks of vaccing everywhere daily - including wood floors but we have done it by using some powder for the carpetted floors we got from Asda and frontline from the vets but also by keeping the dogs to one area and away from the rugs/carpets etc.

You have to be extra thorough with the vaccing and make sure you also vac the tops of the skirting boards and all the crevices in the sofas etc but it does work you just have to give it time.

Hope this helps.

You must keep using frontline, it's not just one application.

We do our cat every 4 weeks in the summer

No fleas.

Short of that, sheep dip. But this is heavy organo-phosphate stuff, and only available to farmers (if they still use OPs)/

Also get some 50% DEET (Diethyl Toluamide) insect repellent, and "splash it all over" yourself, especially wrists and ankles.

Hiya Litha, if you are going to use the "bombs", don't forget to
get all the animals out of the house while it is working and keep to the manufacturers instructions for your safety. Also you must "worm " the animals when you have sprayed them for the fleas.
good luck

i found cat fleas again the other day and PANICKED. i can't stand the little bleeders. i do her with frontline every 6 weeks but obviously it didn't work this time so i did her again and covered the whole house in powder stuff and they seem to have gone away. fingers crossed! if you can get hold of it try using the powder i use .... you shake it on carpets and everything , leave it for half an hour and hoover it up and fleas and eggs pretty much gone . think its made by bob martin , i got it from the co-op but there must be somewhere else that sells it. thing is with fleas is that this weather really brings them out ..... even when i didn't have a cat i still got fleas last summer from previously having cats ... the eggs must have been embedded in the carpet and waiting for some lovely hot weather to pop out. :gag:
good luck getting rid of them !!

we try doing our cat but the litlle blxxxxr knows & clears off.she passes the fleas to her fave dog who then passes them on.
always use the asda stuff & seems to work 'cos i'm a cheap skate.
usually follow the same routine each year b4 they show up.

1.clip the dogs (haircut not "clip")
2.bath in flea shampoo#
3.try & flea collar the cat.
4.dust the carpet area where the mutts sleep, dust.spray their bed.
5 "frontline"'em all
6.cross fingers & hope for the best.

Pity you cannot check the people who come in contact with your pets. I know my dog kept getting fleas and I finally figured out they were being brought in by the owner of another animal. Since then I have had no problems using frontline to get rid of any fleas the dog may pick up from other sources.

Remember that only something like 10% of fleas live on the animal, and it is no good just doing one part of the house. Sure your pet may only be allowed in the front room and not the bedrooms, but fleas latch onto your clothing and get carried about that way. Spray the entire house.

That's a good point I forgot about that spray your footware too because they can also latch onto that. Also as crazy as this may sound empty the vac before moving onto another room because apparently they have been known to be able to get out of the bag before. Just as extra info the eggs from fleas can lay dormant for months so as zombiekillah said getting rid of the dogs doesn't necessarily work.

What sort of hoover do you have Litha?

It also helps if you 'service' the hoover. replace all it's filters and put a new bag in it to make sure it's working on maximum suck

If it's a cylinder rather than an upright, consider getting the turbobrush attachment for it, so it brushes thoroughly as well as just sucking

throw the bag out as soon as you've done the house top to bottom, so the blighters aren't escaping again

Does anybody know whether steam cleaning kills fleas?

Litha if you are going to use one of those bomb things you need to check they are safe when the new born pups are around because the residue of those lasts weeks I think. Personally I would doubt that they are but I could be wrong.

its a bagless one strix, we emptied it after use tho cos i said to shane they might escape back out.:suspect:

good point wendy i never thought to check if the residue would be harmful to the puppies, mind you if i do it now in 2 weeks it should be ok but i will check anyway.

I've always used Eucalyptus oil against fleas. Rub it neat on the inside of the dog's collar and make sure it can't be licked.

Also make up a solution in a spray bottle, just a few drops of oil in a pint of water, then spray the dog with this and brush it well into its coat, and a few drops in his bath water. I spray the dog's bedding too and put a couple of drops in with the washing machine conditioner.

Not a safe way to treat cats though, - they do lick themselves a lot.

Isn't tea-tree the best repellant? On the dogs, where they sleep and on you too. I don't think it actually kills them but it does get rid.

Don't you have it in the shop?

You want a really powerfull hosepipe - like a fire hose.
It works for the woolly aphids on my apple tree :D

Thank you so much for posting this thread! I was begining to think it was only me!

I've nearly been eaten alive the last week. I've done everything I can think of. We have one cat and one dog. I've used frontline and gone through the whole house with some spray stuff that you leave for half an hour then ventilate the room.

I'm going to a wedding tomorrow and can't wear anything that will show my red blotchy legs :( Which is probably a blessing in disguise for the other guests.

I've not noticed any new bites over the past two days - so fingers crossed.

Try Vapona micro-tech trigger spray, meant for ants and cockroaches, etc. but works for fleas. spray the whole house, and the lightest of spray down your pets back, lasts for up to three months,
available Morrisons around a fiver.

Yes! but I did say the lightest of spray,
if you can use it around the house its not likely to do much harm,
better than breathing in all that flea spray that doesn't work, used it once the dog has never had a flea in the past 5 years and he was 17 last week.
fit as a fiddle

as a last resort if you cant get rid you could consider sheffield environmental health pest control if you ring town hall they should connect you , they used to spray the house for this sort of infestation not sure if they still do now though and if they do what the cost is but if they still do this is the solution to your problem .

Litha,

Try Indorex from Virbac............a spray available from Vet's. It works a treat on carpets and soft furnishings. I think it costs around £14 a tin but worth every penny
