View Full Version : Meersbrookians - Why do you love it?
noseyrosie 22-07-2005, 01:19 There seem to be a fair few Meersbrookians around here.
Anyone care to join me in a thread about the area and it's unique greatness?
My usual spiel is 'more windchimes per square kilometre than anywhere else in the region' - care to add?
There are also 5 households (that I know of) that play folk music just on my part of my road!
I'e got a friend and he and his family live in Meersbrook . I can't say exactly where so as to respect his privacy.
I've visited them and stayed at their house a few times. I've always found Meersbrook a strange sort of place ------and I don't mean that in a negative way !
It's sort of , "tucked away in a corner , " so to speak. It's not posh or expensive like Dore but it's not rough either. It's an odd shape , too ; very hilly in parts and then suddenly flat.
I always get the impression that if Meersbrook was a person , [s ]he would want to keep themselves to themselves.
My mate speaks well of their neighbours and from what he says there are a fair number of eccentrics and , "characters " in Meersbrook.
All in all , I think it's a nice place and I wouldn't mind living there-------Sheffield's , "hidden " suburb !
Memphis Bell 22-07-2005, 09:12 Meersbrook is ace!
The only thing that spoils it, is the odd chav that makes their way down there to congregate on the shop corner, :( other than that, i wouldn't really want to live anywhere else. it's got a great coronation street feel to it. And yes there are quite a lot of lentil eating types round there, but they're quite harmless ;)
If Meersbrook was a person it would teach or work in social services. And on the weekend it would wear tie-dye. Not a bad place, Meersbrook, not a bad place at all.

I kinda agree.
If meersbrook was a man he'd have 2 kids (boy and a girl obviously) be a corduroy clad geography teacher who would cycle everywhere. He would attend Cuba Solidarity Campaign events and be very uncoordinated when it comes to dancing. He would fancy himself as a mingler in terms of the working classes but when drunk (on Chilean red wine) his middleclass background would become more evident....he would probably be called Graham or Steve. He'd be Heterosexual
If meersbrook was a woman she'd have 1 kid, wear long skirts or trousers and have short hair. she would be vegetarian and be particularly fond of soya desserts and dried fruit. She'd definately work in or be involved in the Voluntary sector. She would live in a large house rented through a cooperative and she would have a pond in the garden with tadpoles. She would also have a small patch where her biodegradables could be dumped inorder to 'make' her own compost. Her name would be Jane or Carol. She would be a Lesbian.
The Characters used in this post are entirely fictional and are in no way based on or represent anybody in Meersbrook. Any similarities are purely coincidental......sort of.
Captain_Scarlet 22-07-2005, 10:21 Why is Meersbrook so nice to live in ?
No one knows it exists apart form people who live there.
We have a huge beautiful park with a manor, tennis courts, bowling green, stream and jaw dropping view.
There's a sence of community with neighbours (at least our group of 5 terrasses tend to have drinks in our backgardens together & chat).
We have local conviniences (2 Co-ops, 1 PO, 1 newsagent, 1 boozer, several corner shops).
Meersbrook isn't flat so it's not boring like Mosborough and all that area.
There is history at every street corner (yeh I know that sounds lame but it's true).
We have an invisible stream running down the valley (between Albert & Valley Roads) which you can't see as it's covered.
There are excellent pubs nearby (admitedly they're in Heeley more than Meersbrook).
And finally Meersbrook is such an odd name !
I LOVE IT !
PS: JoaquiNation, you telling us that if Meersbrook were a person he/she'd be a hippy ? ;) ;)
PPS: A Meersbrook meet ?
And Meersbrook Park hill is the most romantic place on earth - my boyfriend proposed to me up there on Sunday night!
Aaaah!
Tubthump 22-07-2005, 10:50 I've just moved round there in the last couple of months from eight years in Hunter's Bar and I have to say I'm really liking the place. Not quite sure whether I exactly qualify as a Meersbrookian or a Heelyite (Nicholson Rd- where exactly does that fall?) but I love the views, the temperament, the people, the amenities, the parks, the Sheaf View, that climbing rock, the house prices. Best thing I did was to seperate myself from the post-student, Ecclesall Rd clinging mentality. Other Hunters Bar obsessives on this forum should give it a try.

Meersbrook is to one side of the Meers Brook, and Heeley on the other (also the former border between Yaarkshar and Darbishar). Note that your post code area is S2 and not S8.
I'd have to say you're an Heeleyite, but the nice Heeley, not the scruffy Heeley of around Cambridge Rd.
Heeley & Meersbrook is 'pretty' muchthe same in many respects, same architecture, more or less same mentality.
Welcome to the area is what I say.
Here in Boring Mosborough we have an invisible stream that you can see !

My postcode is S8. Does that mean I can be a Meersbrookian now?
JoyfulGrrl 22-07-2005, 12:23 Woo hoo! Meersbrook is fabulous and I've got proof!
I've lived here for 8 years now. I have so many memories on different streets and in the park. But last year a deranged part of me thought it would be a good idea to move out to the Peak District with my then partner. Off we went.
Within six months:-
I hated my job
I was lonely as hell
I thought I was going mad
My partner and I found out we were the least compatible people in the world . . .
I ran away. I returned to S 8. Within weeks:-
I'd written my best fiction ever!
I'd auditioned for a band and got in!
I had reconnected with all my friends
work seemed quite manageable . . .
Moral of the story: bad things happen when you leave S 8 That's it!! I'm here for life now. My kids will be raised going to the park! They will attend Meersbrook Bank!
Meersbrook Meet - let's do it. We'll probably get there and all know each other anyway . . .
JfG x
PS - lol about the "Meersbrook woman" sterotype. I have lived with her!! I did invent a new collective noun when I'd been here a few years - "a Meersbrook of lesbians" - another bonus to living here (for me and the sisters, anyway...)

[ not the scruffy Heeley of around Cambridge Rd.
Lived around that bit of Heeley for 16 years, i never recall it being scruffy.
OK maybe a bit untidy.
But i also had an S8 postcode
noseyrosie 22-07-2005, 15:08 Warms the cockles of my heart, this does :)
It's fab. I hate the chav invasion, especially as I went to school with some of them, stupid kids.
Where else would you find, for example, a house where the owners have built old glass bottles into their garden wall? (Argyle Rd....hello to the people who live there, I like your wall) Or that painting of some crazy fairy hippy thing in their window (same road). When the trees were planted at the top of the park when I was a wee bairn (they're looking pretty big now), everyone joined in and in typical local style, ribbons and bells were tied to all the saplings!
And the walled garden - surely a haven for local hippy families with it's events.
On the part of out street that I live on alone there's 2 professional folk musicians, lesbians, jazz people next door, lots more folkies in the form of us and some others, innumerable social workers, teachers, and general teaching types, and a neighbour over the road's job is teaching children about non-fossil fuel energy sources and 'green' transport.
We also probably have the highest Green Party vote in the city. Our green candidate was hanging around outside the polling station being friendly this year.
Oh I shall be sad to leave...

But i also had an S8 postcode  Yeh a bit untidy, or so it looked like last week ;)
It's the houses, they've been built a bit rendomly, front gardens unkept, cars parked on the road, groups of people standing not doing much... It just didn't feel right ! (Bit like 'em next to Steve's Convenience Store)
S8, that's weird... I thought Albert rd was the postcode limit between S2 & S8, well I were wrong ;)
EDIT: Yeh the limit between S2 & S8 is London Road-Gleadless Road-Carrfield Road-Meers Brook-Cat Lane.
You do live in my opinion in Heeley.
I moved to Meersbrook last october and I LOVE it..
* People say hello and smile at you when you pass them in the street..
* Very sociable back gardens!
* Theres BOBs Bananas.. great for organic veg and a chat! And In A NutShell for POLISH SLICE ...YUMMMMMMM!
* The view from the top of the park is stunning!!
* Its close enough to town to walk there easily.. but far enough out too
* Virgin gym on the doorstep
* Lavers also in walking distance.. great if you're DiYing like me
* Nice wide roads like Valley Road and Meersbrook Park Road
* I have great views from my loft.
* The noise of owls hooting at night is lovely
* Alot of the houses have fairly decent sized gardens for terraces (one of my main reasons for buying)
* lots of hippy types (Always a good thing)
Even though I didn't grow up in sheffield, alot of my Dads side of the family lived on Argyle Road / Valley Road and Dad lived about 6 houses down from the house I bought when he was little so I feel like I have roots and history here.
I hope to be able to afford a house on Meersbrook Park Road one day.. they are gorgeous.. big old houses on a quiet tree lined street with nothing but the park on the otherside of the road... how cool is that!?!?!
Hurray for meersbrook!
And the other interesting fact about Meersbrook is that there are no pubs!
You've also got the best councillors representing you, but I might be biased on that one.

No there are no puibs worth bothering with in Meersbrook, but just over the border in Heeley we have the Sheaf View-one of the best pubs in the city, surely? How lucky are we to have all that great beer within walking distance. Ever more special as all the buses that can get you to anywhere else worth drinking are disappearing off the face of the map.
A Meersbrook meet would be great. How about in the Sheaf sometime early evening before it gets too busy.
I bet a lot of us already know each other by sight just from going there.

I've said it before, the Sheaf View Inn is the way forward !
That's why I've created this page: Pubs of South West Sheffield (http://www.smokefilledroom.co.uk/Gregsworld/Sheffield/#Sheaf)
We also have great history!!!
the culvert marks the boundary between the ancient kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria. It runs through my garden!
John Ruskin.

And from January Meersbrook will have the second Steiner kindergarten in South Yorkshire.

I heard it was because the area had something to do with the Quakers, who didn't drink.
Not sure how true that is though.

Down the road :D
Not sure about official boundaries, but about Carrfield Road to Bishops House to Shirebrook Road to Woodbank Crescent and Chesterfield Road at the bottom as my mind's boundaries!
Surely the pubs on Chesterfield Road - The Crown, The Red Lion, White Lion, count? As pubs I mean...

I think it's Methodist, rather than Quaker. I've just moved from Meersbrook to Granville Road and there's a similar lack of pubs here. That's because the land round here belongs to the Duke of Norfolk - traditionally a pillar of the Catholic establishment in Sheffield - and there are covenants prohibiting the sale of alcohol in properties on the Duke's land. There's possibly something similar going on in Meersbrook.

I've never lived at Meersbrook, but the view at the top of Meersbrook Park is out of this worl - absolutely amazing. It's also a nice place to walk round (when I'm feeling a little energetic).

True, and it's the best park for sledging, if you have a death wish.
It's a shame they don't do more to look after Bishops House though, it was looking in a right state last time I went, covered in graffiti and surrounded by rubbish.
NewcastleOwl 25-07-2005, 12:15 I remember watching that Life of Grime series that was set in Sheffield.
On one episode they were featuring the work of the Council's Park Warden responsible for emptying the poopa scoop bins in the city's green spaces.
He proudly proclaimed that he could tell you which part of the city a particular dog mess originated from by its smell!!!!!!!
He was in Meersbrook Park at the time and said something along the lines of "Here in Meersbrook for example, we have rather a lot of Bohemian types; their dog muck smells of chick peas and lentils," - classic!
Newcastle owl
I bet if he got a sample from Ecclesall Woods ,it wouldn't smell at all.
Well, you're selling the place to me. I'm always keeping an eye out for possible places to settle myself when I can eventually afford to buy somewhere. I've already decided on Sheffield, just need to decide on an area. Probably won't be able to buy a house until I'm 50 though; bit of a wait. :(
My husband's spent the first 21 years of his life in Meersbrook and he'd agree with all the great things written here about it.
Can't see the attraction myself:suspect:
FizzyPop 25-07-2005, 13:27 lived in Meersbrook/Norton Lees, fits in2 both areas i spose, for 15 years :D , cudnt imagine living anywhere else, we pretty much have everything we need in Meersbrook but why is it that

b The Cross Sythes, yeh, that's Meersbrook (which finishes at the TOP end of Courts' car park (the old Meersbrook stone mine thing).
so that's ONE pub in Meersbrook, and all the pubs in Lowfield/Heeley at about 5 minutes walk.
I'm going to the Sheaf View Inn tonight, anyone care to join me ? I'll probably be on the patio, inside's always full !
PS: Thinking back at the borders of Meersbrook, I've taken care to scan my A to Z, and whitening the areas that are no longer in Meersbrook, of course they're not rigid limits, and you may add or remove a few streets but I believe it beeing accurate according to the research I've done these past few years.
http://www.smokefilledroom.co.uk/Gregsworld/Files/Misc/Meersbrook.jpg Enjoy, Greg.
JoyfulGrrl 26-07-2005, 10:41 Didn't see your post in time Captain Scarlet, but I'd definitely be up for a Meersbrook meet and can think of no finer venue than the Sheaf, if the Heeley-ites don't object too much ...
I bet we'd all meet up and go - oh, it's you, the person I always see out walking the dog/tending the allotment/painting stop the war signs (we've still got ours up...)/buying chick peas at In a Nutshell/smiling happily because we live in the best part of Sheffield!!!
So, Meersbrook Mafia meet-up, anyone? Times? Dates? Possibly not wed nights if we want to (a) get a seat and (b) hear ourselves talking - unless we wanted to put in a crack team for the Hardest Pub Quiz in Sheffield, might not be a bad idea . . .

I live on Cliffefield road, the bit right by the park. Funnily enough, when I bought my house, the deeds state its in Norton Lees, but whenever I book a taxi, they say 'cliffefield road, Meersbrook?'. I don't bother correcting them. However, I have friends on Pearson Place which is Meersbrook, and friends on Bishops court road which is Norton Lees!
Could it be that the borders changed but the deeds don't? I've always taken my official address to be Norton Lees as in my title deeds.
I love the area anyhow so it doesn't bother me which I fall under. I'm right by Meersbrook park and love it. We should all be meeting up for some cans in the park (preferably the top end near me where you have the view!).
My partner and I are currently going through the process of buying our first house in Meersbrook. Neither of us are from Sheffield so we don't know any areas that well.
I couldn't help but notice quite a lot of youngsters hanging round the streets in the Valley Road/Rushdale Road area and have got a slight niggle in the back of my mind about it. Does anyone experience any problems relating to this?

Cliffefield Road definitely is Meersbrook, person that did the deeds prolly overlooked at the map. If you look at the map you can see that the furthest south place in Meersbk are the old brick works (Homebase/Courts) then you draw a long line all the way to the Meers Brook.
Although cabbies can't drive, they do tend to know what area is what ;)
lazyfish 26-07-2005, 19:04 I've just had a beautiful afternoon, strolling through Meersbrook Park, slowly savouring a couple of exquisite pints in the sunshine on the beer garden at the Sheaf View, enjoying the view and watching the trains, then ambling back home along streets that somehow manage to be quiet and leafy without falling into posh isolation. The latter, for me, is what makes Meersbrook the special place that it is. It's perfectly balanced.
Much as I love living here, I feel sort of reluctant to bang on about how ace it is, cos then everyone will want to come and live here. Although, on the other hand, that'd double the value of my house... oh... right, I get it now... :)
I've never heard a peep out of the kids at the junction of Valley Road and Rushdale Road (only been here a year tho).
Kids always hang out on some street corner somewhere.. (tho if I were a kid round here I'd definitely hang out at the top of the park!)
They seem alright to me... I thought the trouble that occurred previously was down to kids from out of the area?

Yes, they have caused trouble, e.g. one of the girls was kind enough to punch my friend in the face as she left the shop, but they only cause trouble (it seems) for people who they recognise (like myself). They're not very local, some are, but most live either at the top of the park or in Heeley Greenish, so the parents don't see them at it. In the end, they may look threatening but they tend to leave people alone. My main problem is with that bloody great dog they have on a choke chain.
I too wish they'd open that road again, it was a mistake to close it. It;s solve any problems.
Captain_Scarlet 26-07-2005, 23:18 After drinking a fair much with my neighbours (the houses n°20 to n°30) on Valley Rd, I was told of an ASB Order on the whole of Valley Rd and Meersbrook Park Av that apparently states than ANY less than 16 YO found staying still (like not moving, havong a chat with someone) for more than 5 minutes is not aloud to do so, and police are authorised to esocrt any such less than 16 YO back to their houses without reason.
So yeh, maybe it's OTT, but if you wanna buy some bog roll, and there are some kids there, you can call the SYP (Chesterfield Rd next 2 Swiggy's) they'll get taken away, and you can do your shopping.
Meersbrook, beeing quiet area as it is, was on the NATIONAL news for that, beeing one of the only FOUR areas in the country to have an 'Area ASBO', I.E. an Anti Social Behaviour Order on an entire area towards anyone !
So basically, the kids outside the store that were there this evening (I drove down Valley Rd around half 8 tonight) must be older than 16. I would suggest that ASBO be updated really, or perhaps a new ASBO for that particular road junction.
All this makes Meersbrook sound reit dodgy when it really isn't and a small group of people make it less appealing :(
Thanks for that everyone.
I suppose you get groups of kids in most places and logic dictates that they have to grow up and move on at sometime.

I'll be there tonight!! Will check out other threads and see you later . . .
Regarding the lads on Rushdale, I go running around the area and dread going past that bit as they always heckle . . . I always give them a good stare as I go by and they've never actually done anything worse but it still makes me fume.
Lucy25 - there seems to be an almost palpable divide in Meersbrook between the top end (Cliffefield, Brook Rd, Meersbrook Park Road etc) and the bottom end (Rushdale, Valley etc) in terms of young people hanging out. I think they just can't be arsed to climb the hill! But even down the bottom there's not much going on really, and the actual residents are as fab and friendly as this post would have you believe. Don't let it put you off.
See you later!!

I'm on Cliffefield road, and there are always groups of kids hanging out on Norton lees road, near the corner shop (corner of Norton Lees Road and Derbyshire lane) and sometimes on the corner on my road. There have been a couple of occasions where the girls have stopped my partner to ask him to help them beat up the boys! Obviously my partner told them to go away as he (a grown man) doesn't want to get involved in inmature teenagers problems, and if he did, he would get done for it, not them!
The ASBO order also stands in this area and we have seen the police come round and tell them to go home.
It doesn't put me off the area though, as you can get this anywhere. Hopefully, the teenagers will grow up and stop trying to be chavs soon, and join in with the hippy friendly cool types in the area.
So the kid problem is not just at the bottom of the hill.

OK, I don't know what I'll be wearing but I've got peroxide blonde hair and brown glasses so hopefully we'll spot each other!!
I'm writing a speech for my best friend's wedding (needs to be done today, eek) and it's taking ages . . . so, I won't be able to get there till later on. Got there last week at 9 and we'd missed the start of the quiz! So, I'll try to get there for 8.30 ish. Do we need to make an announcement for this elsewhere on the forum? Who else is up for a Meersbrook Meet tonight?
