View Full Version : Which of these towns would you choose to go to for the weekend?
Kthebean 21-07-2005, 18:55 We want to go and see the fun lovin criminals, unfortunately they are not playing in sheffield so we're thinking of making a weekend of it and going away. Unfortunately none of these towns stands out as somewhere great to go away - what do you reckon?
KookyKoo 21-07-2005, 19:07 hmmm I'd say Edinburgh! Lovely place
muddycoffee 21-07-2005, 19:13 I went to see the Fun Lovin' Criminals last year at the Octogon, and am in fact, currently wearing their T-shirt.
I was very sadly dissapointed. Much of the music was sampled, and it would have been a fantastic gig if they would have had a proper band on stage, rather than just Keyboards, Leadsinger -guitarist and drummer.
The whole gig was a bit flat, as they were having to play to a sync track, and most of the reviews stated that they are severely lacking in new material, as at the time they hadn't realeased anything for a few years.
London is a great place to visit, there is so much to do, don't miss the ride on the thames, ferry, which you can use to get from station to station on the thames and see the sites at each one. Once you have paid you can hop on and off. And they serve fosters lager on the boat!
Kthebean 21-07-2005, 19:15 I'm suprised, muddycoffee! I went to that gig and really really enjoyed it :) London would be great, I just don't know if we can afford to stay down there.
Kookykoo, thanks for the suggestion but they're not playing in edinburgh! Would sure like to go there sometime though.
the_rudeboy 21-07-2005, 19:18 I think a lot of it depends on wotelse u wanna do apart from c the FLC. And also how u intend to get there.
For example, Norwich is quite a nice place with some nice surroundin areas but its a nitemare to get to on public transport.
KookyKoo 21-07-2005, 19:19 yeah just realised i had a stupid 5 minutes there!!! tee hee hee
I'd say Bristol or Manchester, both lovely places with good vibes, though be warned: a fair bit of snobbery abounds in Bristol! But then in my experience you always meet lovely people at gigs who make up for any shirty locals
I just adore Glasgow, the perfect place for a break. Edinburgh is gorgeous, but Glasgow has the grandeur, the buzz and the vibrant city feel. Great shopping and night life too.
alchresearch 21-07-2005, 19:34 Not in the list, but I'd choose Newcastle. Done loads of weekend city breaks and that one sticks out beyond most other places as there's just so much to see and do.
I'd chose Bristol. Great night life.
redrobbo 21-07-2005, 19:47 You can go to Nottingham or Manchester any weekend - too close to Sheffield.
Bristol and Birmingham are both nice places - but Glasgow has more to offer for a weekend away - but is it too far away?
London is too expensive.
I voted for Norwich. Great little city, and you can get around it in a weekend. Beautiful cathedral, fantastic castle museum, and nice hideaway pubs set amongst narrow, cobbled streets.
Go for it kathythebean!
Kthebean 21-07-2005, 19:57 Mmmm I think we'll be driving, so really, londons out of the running :(
That sounds lovely red! I have had bristol reccomended to me as well. It will be sooooo lovely to get away just the two of us. As well as the gig we would probably want to go out for a nice meal, look round some sights (castles, art galleries, etc) and go to some pubs.
Is glasgow quite rough? It has a bad reputation as far as I'm aware...(although its in the lead at the moment!)
Please vote concientiously the decision will be binding! :)
madblast 21-07-2005, 20:47 we had a weekend in manchester a few weeks ago, had a fab time and canal street was a real eye opener, and we really enjoyed it
i wouldnt go to nottingham for the weekend, in fact avoid nottingham at all cost.
I've been to them all except Glasgow, so I would opt for there. Although I do enjoy a trip to London, as there's simply so much to see and do. But if I had to go on a city break then I'd actually choose somewhere like York. I'm very fond of rainy, miserable old Manchester, but it's far too familiar to spend a weekend in.

I am sure I could name a couple of people on here who would take offence to that!!!
I'd love a weekend in Glasgow, I want to see all the architecture and things associated with Charles Rennie-MacKintosh.
We regularly shop in Manchester, and it is a great city. However, for a weekend, I would choose London every time. There is so much to see and do, although I acknowledge that it may seem expensive to some.
I agree wholeheartedly with Teebee, avoid Nottingham at night. The city centre at the weekend is widely regarded as one of the most violent places in England. For some reason it is a magnet for aggressive genetic refuse. I feel safer in Sheffield, Liverpool and Manchester city centres than I ever do in Notts.
York or Lincoln. Much better than any of the poll options.
Edit: Just actually read the post properly and seen that you can only choose between the stated cities, so go for Manchester.
BoppinBruce 22-07-2005, 07:18 Have a problem going to any of the towns, they are all cities!

Ooh, take the coach if London, and get someone other to do the driving for you. It's rather cheaper than the petrol for the trip, too. Glasgow's edgily cool, Nottingham's an utter hole which its residents unaccountably adore, Bristol's a really nice place. But the gigging capital of the world is London. You could do the Crims, then the next night go see a little Indy band in a dodgy pub in Camden for the contrast. That's the main thing I miss about London really.
Ousetunes 22-07-2005, 07:44 None of the above.
Get up to York, it's fantastic!
It's very romantic, has nice pubs (many, many, many), bistros, restaurants, riverside walks, floodlit buildings and bridges (Clifford's Tower, the Minster, Lendal Bridge), superb gardens (Museum Gardens) and ofcause medieval alleyways with nice shops to look in. Also, most of it is pedestrianised so is nice to walk round.
It's got ghost walks (!), York Dungeon and Yorvik Viking Centre. The Minster itself is well worthy of the entrance fee (irrespective of your opinions on Christianity).
Plenty of cheap, friendly B & Bs to choose from, more expensive, luxurious hotels or even a campsite nearby. Most hotels and B & Bs have their own parking. This will save you up to £15.
All within an hour's drive (okay, an hour and fifteen) or less than an hour on the train.
What more could you want?
If you want more detailed info PM me!
Oh the Fun Loving Criminals?
BoppinBruce 22-07-2005, 07:52 Ousetunes, they cant go to York to see FLC if they aint appearing there. Bristol has a nasty area called St Pauls, if you go there, avoid it. And I cant see why you have put London as expensive.
If a visitor came to Sheffield with no prior knowledge they may find the accomodation expensive.
Look on the net for Easy Hotels, slap in the middle of London from £5.00p a night, no frills, like Easy Jet but, hey, you only want to sleep there. Owned by Stelios, now is that cheap or what?

Then surely it would have to be Glasgow?
That was my choice.

Bruce, see comment at foot of my post. And the note which explains why the message was edited.
Indeedy, I forgot about Fun Loving Criminals (which I'm sure you'll excuse me for).
BoppinBruce 22-07-2005, 08:10 Excuse accepted

Correction!!!! Bristol IS a nasty area, it just happens to contain an even nastier area called St. Pauls!!! (Think Guns, think mindless violence, think that 70 % of crack and heroin dealt in Southern England goes through there.)
This is not mindless prejudice... This is me living there for 21 years before moving up here...
Glasgow has its rough areas just like everywhere, but if you're there on a weekend break, rest assured you won't be seeing them. It is architecturally stunning, and once you've had your fill of the central area you can take a short underground ride to Hillhead and the West End - one of the most wonderful leafy areas of any city. Great restaurants up there too.
Whenever I've been to Glasgow I've just wanted to move there immediately.
Kthebean 23-07-2005, 14:18 Well I expected you guys to help me out, but now its about as clear as mud :D
The poll says glasgow. Hmmm London is tempting, especially since the better half has never been there! I will certainly have a look at the easy hostels, thanks for the tip.
Nottingham and bristol I think are out on account of being a little bit rough (not a good idea to wander round trying to find somewhere!)
I'm quite excited now  I love going away

We voted for Glasgow  We've spent a couple of weekends away there, and I used to live there in a former life ;)
It's like any other city - I wouldn't recommend a tourist visit the manor in Sheffield, so there's parts of Glasgow that are similarly less attractive ;) The centre is fine.
It would be hellpful for you to check where all the venues are in relation to whichever hotel you may be staying in, and how you would get back

Do London a different weekend - a long weekend, with no concert getting in the way ;)
I voted for Birmingham they have spent a hell of alot of money on its centre and its looks great :)
Is the gig at the NEC? I like the NEC for gigs :)
You have to get back out agian by train (realistically ;) ) so pick a hotel near New Street
I'd opt for Norwich and while you're there try the Plasterer's Arms on Cowgate. A proper pub with a wide range of good beers.
Plus, there's a direct train from Sheffield to Norwich.

... that takes so long that it is quicker to go to Doncaster and get a GNER train to Peterborough and change there
Kthebean 23-07-2005, 16:11 Oh good lord. This is getting complicated!
(I have not told the BH that we are going to wherever the forum decides :D )
Reasons why you should go to Birmingham (http://www.kontraband.com/show/show.asp?ID=908&NEXTID=0&PREVID=905&DISPLAYORDER=20030821000008&CAT=anims&NSFW=0&page=8) :)
fnkysknky 23-07-2005, 21:31 Glasgow every time - can't stand London and Brum - maybe that's from working in both a lot. Always had a soft spot for Scotland and would pick Glasgow without a second thought.
Birmingham, simply because I haven't been on a night out down there before..
Try owt once :D
SlimboyFat 23-07-2005, 22:08 Id go along with Kookykoo (not actually go with, dont go worrying Mr Kooky :D ).
Make a weekend in Edinburgh, It wont take that long to drive to Glasgow for the show.
Hey what happened to Dublin?? I'm off there next weekend - its cheap to get to and the Guinness... well, we dont need to say anything about the Guinness! And that dreamy accent!!!
Manchester! def!
nottingham has the best independant record shop but for a really gud vibe and brill atmosphere pick manchester!
spyro2000 24-07-2005, 04:40 Come to Birmingham, great place, guaranteed to have lots to do. If not Brum then Manchester. Plus points for both is that they are both only down the road from Sheffield (compared to most of the others), Notts its just a no no, nothing in Nottingham whatsoever.
Kristian 24-07-2005, 05:16 I got to echo both Redrobbo and Max in their support for Norwich.
I've had the pleasure of staying there several times, and it really is a lovely city. If you decide to go there, check out Sprowston Manor hotel, it really is something else!
Good luck, and let us know where you choose!

I thought Tricia had finished filming in Norwich? Is Five's show filmed there too? :o If so, even more reason to go... :D

totally agree with this... the West End is very nice and if you come out of the hilhead underground turn right up up the hill then across the main road (Great western Rd) there is the botanical gardens as they are fantastic... used to go up there all the time to feed the squirrels.... 10 min walk down hill to the main road at the bottom and turn left past the hospital and you are at the Art Galleries and Transport museum which are both free and very interesting...
there are loads of things to do so really worth the trip :D :D :D D

It is indeed: Sprowston Manor (http://marriott.co.uk/Channels/globalSites/propertypage/UK/nwigs) It's about five years since I stayed there, but it really is top-notch!

Not sure thats quite what the other half had planned for our romantic weekend but i will CONVINCE HIM OTHERWISE!!!
 What watching Trisha does to the human brain (http://www.camif.fr/wwwSurf/images/images/1/2/C030100_647_9.jpg)
Go on. Ruin a good weekend :suspect:

I voted for Bristol for its seafaring history.....but I wish I had voted Manchester now so I could disappear into the Peak District all day rather than stay there.
Kthebean 26-07-2005, 19:06 So at the moment its definitely Glasgow, followed by Bristol, followed closely by London!
I did suggest the trisha idea, but his reaction was similar to yours, strix. Some people just don't have their priorities right :D
redrobbo 26-07-2005, 19:16 Although I recommended Norwich, I just must come to the defence of Nottingham.
Let me name a few of the many delights of Nottingham City....
Green's Windmill & Science Museum at Sneinton - just around the corner from Notintone Place, the birthplace of William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army.
Goose Fair! (1st. Thu-Fri-Sat in Oct).
The Caves of Nottingham tour
The superb Nottingham Castle Museum (and tour of Mortimer's Hole cave)
Galleries of Justice
Brewhouse Yard Museum
Historical Lace Market (and do look up the shops on nearby Hockley)
Museum of Costume & Textiles
Ice Arena
Concert Hall
Theatre Royal (Victorian theatre - similar to the Lyceum)
Nottingham Playhouse
Severns Lace Centre - opposite the castle
and the pubs.....especially -
Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem - old pub (do go upstairs to the bars set inside the caves!)
But....you can nip down the M1 to Nottingham any day (I had a Sunday pub lunch with my daughter in Nottingham last Sunday - and was still back in time for the Dev Cat forum meet!). So, Kathythebean, still go for Norwich - but do visit Nottingham sometime, if only for a day out!

We lived in Nottingham for a short spell. We visit my sister there sometimes.
Do it for a day out from here another weekend ;)
