View Full Version : Kid's Unlimited, Millhouses (or other nurseries)
green-veggie 21-07-2005, 16:35 I'm a SAHM of a 2 year old girl and I wondered if anyone had any opinion or experience of this nursery?
I want to find a a great nursery for my two year old to start, but it's hard when they all present such glossy images of themselves and I would prefer to know what parent's think of the places themselves.
Is your child happy and settled there?
Are there issues about the place that made you feel you didn't want your child to go there?
Etc, etc.
Any info about any Sheffield nurseries would be greatly appreciated. If you prefer, please PM me. Thanks.

It's alright, I've looked it up, it means "housewife" for anyone else that didn't know. I suppose it must be untrendy to be called that now.
Sorry green veggie but nobody'll be able to PM, you've not done enough posts yet to enable your PMs.. Never mind, post 3 more times and it'll all come good :D

SAHM means 'Stay at Home Mum'
WAHM means 'Work at Home Mum'
MWOH means 'Mum Working Outside the Home'
None of these mean 'housewife' or describe such a gender related division of labour. IMHO it's absolutely nothing to do with being 'trendy'!!! Rather it recognises that both men and women, should they choose, can take equal responsibility for the unpaid work of child care or the running of the home, and 'paid' work either from home or at some other venue. It's great when marriage, or the long term committed relationship between 2 people, can be much more of a partnership, where both people support and facilitate the other reaching their 'whole' potential and fulfillment.
Like many abbreviations/language used on the internet, it is commonly known and understood by those who it affects.
So HTH and BFN.

PS. Do you know about any nurseries?

Thanks Rich. Didn't know about that. I've posted twice more now.
green-veggie 21-07-2005, 18:00 Ok, this is my 5th post. Now I can be PMed.

I am appalled at your use of the word "mum" in this context as this clearly should be replaced by NGSHBCW(F) or Non Gender Specific Home Based Child Care Worker (Female).
Quite honestly I can't see what the difference is? You are either a wife or a husband and either in a house or not. What difference is there between "Mum" & "Wife" and "Home" & "House" . Political correctness has gone completely bananas whn we hear these ridiculous acronyms.

LOL. I see your point exactly! I'm sorry you feel appalled though. Semantics seem to cause so much un necessary division between people don't they?

I think the difference is perhaps emphasis and application.
Whether or not 'political correctness has gone completely bananas or not', I'm not sure. As I understand it, the use of them is just a part of internet cultural, and as popular as Wysiwyg, LOL, BFN, TTYL, etc etc.
All you have to do is go to some of the online parenting communities and see that the even those considered by some to be more on the 'right', or indeed, of any political or other grouping, use these acronyms as a way of ordinary and everyday communication between members. It's just common practice!
I'm sorry if you feel offended or appalled. Please don't let yourself be. Life is far too short to let any of this get to you!! There are far too many real or important battles to fight.
I am new here and will approach all my posting and replies with great caution in future!
Now back to my original issue and question.... What can you tell me about your experience and opinion of nurseries in Sheffield?
Thx

Well I have no idea what two of those mean either. I know what "LOL" means but wouldn't use it myself because I can just as easily use English instead. My wife (I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it) uses a number of nurseries in her NPVCWWC* but I will have to ask her to log on when she has finished the hoovering and has brought me my tea. Actually I won't be able to ask her to log on as she will read that last bit and kill me. The only one that I personally have experience of is Little SchoolHouse and they are very nice, professional, helpful and flexible, they even feed all the children vegie food, I think, to keep it simple.
*What! You don't know this acronym? Non Paid Vital Community Work Without Compensation. That is she organises community events where nurseries are paid to organise a creche (so she will know several of them) - but doesn't get paid. This is work both inside and outside the home for which she does not get a salary but sometimes get some of her expenses back so it could be SAHSBNAM (Sometimes But Not Always)
I met a SHAM the other day, which as far as I can tell means Sitting at Home on her Arse Mum. But being a WAHD (Working At Home Dad) married to a WAHM (Working At the Hospital Mum), Joyphilspawn goes two days per week to the wonderful new Grapevine Nursery at Heeley Bridge (421 London Rd, Sheffield, S2 4HJ - 0114 255 8881). Liz McGill, the proprietor, is an ex-teacher - so the kiddies get a kind of structured play without the education thing being too heavy. Tis incredibly clean and holds food hygeine awards. The nosh is vegetarian and designed to avoid allergens. Brilliant staff who feed back info to the parents very well. Most importantly Child is incredibly happy there. She's only small, but is coming on in leaps and bounds in terms of responsiveness. Babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers are all mixed up together, which seems to teach them loads about community. Total recommendation. I think they still have some vacancies, so get in there while you can!

A new Kindergarten will be opening in Meersbrook in January. It will take 3-7 year olds and will be a Steiner Waldorf Kindergarten. This will be an addition to the one in Nether Edge.

It's a compliment that people think it is a "hippy" form of education and I have been called a hippy on a few occasions but...........it's more of a complamentory form of education that has been around since 1919. The government are now seeing the value of it and are helping towards it being state funded as it is in Northern Europe.
Sooo........soon in Sheffield there will be a Steiner School for all to attend, the Kindergartens are the foundations for this and will feed into it.
Thanks for the support Noseyrosie, it all helps and it is all good.
:D
for an excellent nursery try the one at hallam uni on brromgrove road.....all my kids have gone there, over the past 7 years, and they are the best bunch of staff you could wish for. many have been there for years, so are a well established team. In all our years there have never had a single problem - any behaviour issues are dealt with swiftly and professionally.
manager bernadette is lovely....very helpful and always available to chat over any questions/problems etc.
cant praise them high enough.....my 3 kids loved it there, and the twins were quite sad when they realised they wouldnt be going back in september (starting school
 )
