View Full Version : Peak District walks and public transport
theflyingfish 17-03-2003, 17:04 wahey - isn't this weather beautiful?! I caught a 257 bus to Stanage edge at the weekend and had a glorious walk in lovely sunshine, it was great, then some lovely scampi in the Scotman's pack in Hathersage - what a great day.
Anyway, can anyone recommend any other walks in the peaks (hoping the weather stays nice for next weekend!) that are also accessible by train or by bus?

The Plague village walk is a nice educational walk.

I posted a link in the Sheffield Links section about "Sheffield Walks" check out it.
There are some pleasant ways to walk to Grindleford, which can take in Ecclesall Woods, Whirlow and Padley Gorge. You can catch the train back from Grindleford to Sheffield (though it only goes once every two hours). If you want something shorter you can walk from Grindleford to Fox House, and catch the 240 bus back.
nb., whatever you do at Grindleford Station, don't bother with the cafe there. It's billed in some places as 'the best cafe in the world', but I found little evidence to back this up when I tried to get a sandwich there yesterday! (was out on a walk with a couple of friends too)
This brought back many memories of walks in the Peak district when I was just a nipper, and I didn't even live in Sheffield then.
I was born in Goldthorpe,in the Dearne Valley but we used to go for rides in the car all over the place and Derbyshire was no exception.
Thanks for the memories!

Well anything along the Hope Valley line. Just get a train out to Edale and take your pick. Or get off at Hope and walk to Edale over Lose Hill and that ridge.
Or there's a bus out to Caslteton about every hour or so I think.

Kinderscout is a good walk.
Or you could catch a train to Horton in Ribblesdale and do the 3 peaks which is what I'm planning to do soon :)
alchresearch 20-03-2003, 19:46 A nice walk is along the Burbage Rocks valley past Carl Wark to Toads Mouth. Take the road from Sheffield to Ringinglow and start at the car park. Walk down the valley past the forest.
Then, turn right, over a delightful bridge and up Carl Wark and onto Higger Tor.
Or, for the more adventurous, carry on to Toads Mouth and then follow the road towards Hathersage. Stop for an ice cream at the Owler Tor car park and make up the hill towards the Mother Cap rocks. At the ridge, follow the path back to Carl Wark.
alchresearch 20-03-2003, 19:46 If you don't fancy shelling out for a map, go to www.streetmap.co.uk where you can view and print OS maps for free.

i did that a couple of years back, got bus to Fox House, walked to carl wark, across the hilltops to blue john cavern, and down to castleton, circling the hilltops surrounding castleton and then onto grindleford, caught train back home :)
Phanerothyme 21-03-2003, 10:56 Went out a fortnight ago - Started at Wyming Brook, headed upto the headstone, back down to the redmires reservoirs, up to stanage edge and turn left, past cowpers stone, turned right at the road and up to Higgers Tor, accross to Carl Wark, down Burbage Brook to the Fox House, then follow the Totley tunnel back into Sheff. Quadriceps hurt like hell the next day.
At one point on stanage could see 4 or 5 power station cooling towers in Notts and Lincs! Great walk, fantastic weather, utterly captivating views.
All we need now is the sea.
mickyhix 10-04-2003, 13:58 yepyep, mam tor in castleton and across the peaks into edale. usually a good one. but i live in the peak, so keep your muddy boots away! :p
Internetowl 18-04-2003, 20:11 Just thought I'd add a coment on the above venue. They have no competition so can afford to serve up what they want which is a pity. Went last week with the nipper, they were rude and abrupt to customers and the food was poor. Packed lunch next time I think.
:(
baublebag 19-04-2003, 15:54 We did a bloomin' marvellous day out by pub trans last summer, somehow we bought a return ticket from Sheffield to Edale that worked on both buses and trains and only cost about a fiver. Coming from Norfolk where buses and trains are as rare as gold-plated kalashnikovs and twice as expensive, this in itself seemed like some kind of major miracle. Still not quite believing it would work, we got the bus to Hope, ambled into Castleton for a bit of exercise (hardcore, us!) then picked up an amazing free stop anywhere minibus that takes you up Winnats and over the top into Edale FOR FREE! You just hail it anywhere along the road. After a skinful and a top tea in the pub at Edale, we found there were loads of trains home to Shef, even until quite late. Extraordinary. If they are still doing that deal this summer we will definitely do it again.
Enjoy such amazing public transport while it lasts, we are definitely spoilt for it round here compared to other parts of England.
mickyhix 23-04-2003, 12:44 the busses round castleton are good. i live in bradwell which is four miles from castleton. my brother is a tour guide at treak cliff cavern in castleton, so go pay him a visit, a great underground trip, go up and ask for rob :p
Win (Winn?) hill, next to LadyBower Resevoir is a fantastic walk. A bit of a steep climb up, but the views from the top are exceptional. I'm not sure how accesible this is by public transport though.

Not sure about buses but you can get the train to Hope easily enough and walk from there.

In the Sheffield 20s & 30s walking group, we keep a searchable record of all the routes we've ever walked - and you can get to loads of them by bus or train. Have a look around here:
