I would like Laws to go with this team any other ideas?

Grant

Spurr Wood Beevers Buxton

Potter O'Conner

JJ Miller Esajas

Tudgay

4-2-3-1

I understand your thinking here, but we struggle to play anything other than 4-4-2, we even struggle with that :hihi:

I'd go for:

Grant

Buxton - Wood - Purse - Spurr

Gray - Potter - O'Connor - Esajas

JJ - Tudgay

I'd love Esajas to play, but we'd need Gray to balance it up a bit, therefore put JJ upfront with Tudgay - which I reckon could thrive if given more chances. I think Potter and Miller would be too attack minded hence putting O'Connor in there.

i only left Gray out coz i dont think he can play Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday (similair to Purse), I hope im wrong coz he's important to us. Pre-season i was slating O'conner but he's started off playin quite well so while he's doing well i'd get him in there (i cant c it lasting!!!)

Esajas needs a long run in the team - he's confident and calm on the ball, with a qicked left boot!

I'm gerrin on a bit, and my memory's not what it was ......
I can't remember a direct signing either, except maybe (Bernard Shaw) I think. He was a crappy left back, and if memory serves we signed him when he was in his mid thirties.
I await the grunting pack correcting me in their hundreds, as is the norm.
Anyway, I still don't want a United reject .... end of.

Seeing as you have Alex on ignore i will post this.
Bernard Shaw went from Blades to Wolves to owls to worksop and he was such a crappy left back he played in a Uefa Cup Final :huh:

Shaw began his career at home city club Sheffield United as an apprentice. He made his first team debut during 1963 and, by 1966, was a first choice player. He was sold to Wolverhampton Wanderers for £70,000 in July 1969.

He made his Wolves debut on 8 October 1969 in a 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday. After battling for his position during his debut season he was a first choice player over the following seasons, which saw him play in the 1972 UEFA Cup Final.

After 154 appearances in total for Wolves, he returned to his native Sheffield in Summer 1973, joining Sheffield Wednesday. He played over 100 games for the Owls over the next three seasons before dropping into the non-league with Worksop Town before retiring.

Match Stats

Shots (on Goal) Newcastle United9(6) Sheffield Wednesday4(3)
Fouls newcastle United 12 Sheffield Wednesday 26

Ryan Taylor almost wrapped up the win within seven minutes of the restart when, after Sean McAllister had been penalised for a foul on Jonas Gutierrez 25 yards out, he forced Grant into a fine save with a curling free-kick.

Nolan blasted a long-range effort just over after the visitors failed to clear the resulting corner, and it seemed only a matter of time before the home side extended their lead.

But Wednesday rallied as the game passed the hour mark and Harper was called upon to make his first save of the game from Gray's 64th-minute free-kick :o

Ryan Taylor could not hit the target after being set up by substitute Xisco and Ameobi 20 minutes from time.

But Harper had to dive bravely at Jeffers' feet with four minutes remaining after full-back Tommy Spurr had played the striker in behind the home defence.

not according to the stats, stats never lie

not according to the stats, stats never lie

They don't lie, but they can be manipulated.

For example - the country has a Labour government. That means that most people in this country want a Labour government. No. The stats, on which you place so much weight, say that at the last election, around 38% of people voted Labour. So two-thirds didn't want a Labour government. Just like any statistic, that's been manipulated so that we have a Labour governmnent.

I guarantee you now that I could twist the statistics from the match yesterday to make either team look the better team. I absolutely guarantee it. Pitsmoorlad did it earlier. It's dead easy.

At the end of the day only one statistic matters - goals scored. We lost, that's all that matters. Onwards and upwards though.

That said, the statistics could say anything favourable to Wednesday and you wouldn't believe them or you'd try to twist them.

We lacked width last night until JJ went out wide and every time he got the ball he caused problems for the defence. Apart from that the teams were pretty equal. The referee stopped the game too much for nothing and stopped any chance of it gaining some momentum.

Gray was unlucky with his free kick, good save from Harper. I thought Purse had a solid game. Tudgay's first touch was poor last night. We had no other outlet up front really.

I heard Ameobi controlled the ball with his hand before scoring but I couldn't see, I was literally on the back row. Very high up! But I did see a pippistrelle bat flying round in front of us. That was nice.

scoobydotcom
20-08-2009, 10:38
First-Half we can have no complaints, we couldnt keep hold of the ball and although we had the odd chance before Ameobi's goal i was never confident of us taking the lead. They took charge of the game and up until the break we looked lacking.
Second - Half we were a bit edgy for 10mins or so but then grew confident and our midfield really came into the game although i think Laws should have brought Esajas on earlier, JJ looked dangerous on the wing and made some exciting runs but no end product. Jeffers had an amazing chance to equalize and I can only see this further denting his confidence and his popularity (if that's possible!) with the fans. Overall i wasnt to dissapointed, we didnt look like scoring for the majority of the game but was nice to see us having a lot of possession (somthing to do with them letting us play in midfield i reckon, but non-the-less still good to see) and i can only think that if we play like that against a lot of teams (starting with Scunny) we'll get that win sooner rather than later

p.s another great away set of fans and the Barmy Army for sure outsung the Toon Army, i believe the small allocation of away fans was something to do with our refusal to sit down very often!! Time for a lemsip for me - my throat is killing and ive lost my voice!!!

The ref was poor and Smith got away with murder. We should have had a pen but he was never going to give it.That said newcastle did create more chances and scored. Was handball but what can you do.???:(:(

the smith thing was a joke, i hate refs who refuse to book someone (while happily booking others for the same kind of challenge) just because he's already on a yellow ... dowd had ample chances to send him off but bottled it.
I never like seeing anyone get sent off but if u go around fouling for 90mins then im sorry but your gonna walk (unless your at home infront of 40,000 home fans of course!)

RS must have invented the whole of the second half last night then.
Were Paul, Seth and John Pearson in a bar somewhere, and not at the game?
We outplayed them for 60% of the game, and even the big Blades Paul Walker and Seth said that any contact at all was pulled up as a foul. This explains the high free-kick count. Newcastle's attacking surge, and shots on target mostly came in a poor first half. Wednesday were never under any 'real' pressure, whereas the Toon were bricking it for long spells of the second half. Better result than many expected for Wednesday, and I'm 'happy' with the narrow defeat.
The only stat that is EVER worth it's salt is the goals scored.
Newcastle 1 Wednesday 0.
Bring on Scunny ...... 4-1 to the Owls Carved in stone!.... and yes, JJ on one wing, and Esajas on the other, and we'll frighten most teams to death. No team could handle both of these players on top form.

agreed, although i do agree with BL not going for this tactic last night, it could have set us up for a Reading style 3-0 whereas we got into some good positions last night without giving Newcastle much counter-attacking possibility, if only jeffers could find his scoring boots from all them years ago and we could be sitting here talking about a well earned point

Just got back from Newcaste. Though it was a pretty even match. On chances a draw would have been fair. Both teams passed it round nicely at times, but neither teams had that cutting edge up front. Apart from Ameobi's goal, they had a free kick brilliantly saved by Grant. For Wednesday, Gray had a free kick also brilliantly saved by Harper and Jeffers had that one on one - not going to criticise him as he brought the ball down superbly to create that chance.
I'd say JJ was the biggest threat out of both teams - we were so much better when he was put on the wing and Esajas on the other, Newcastle seemed to crap their pants when JJ was runnign at them.

Great support from the Owls! Have to say the Geordies were a really friendly bunch and not the stereotypical arrogant 'we're the best fans in the land' you hear about, nice down to earth people and EVERYONE had a Newcastle shirt on.

amen! although if there was one thing i wouldnt agree completely with its the jeffers thing ... i wont criticise him purely for that chance, he looked like a £10m stirker the way he brought it down but he looked like the Jeffers we're used to at S6 with the way he finished it, he just doesnt score goals

Thought Harper did well to close him down though, but suppose he should have slotted it in. I was screaming like a woman just before he shot :hihi::hihi:
On that point, there were plenty of very attractive Wednesday lasses and Geordie lasses last night at the ground

Scooby ..... we have to attack, attack, attack every game and we need JJ and Esajas to make the most of it.
Let's face it, to win most games, we have to score at least 2, which we're capable of doing, but we're fragile defensively, so we have to defend from the front. If we had United's defensive steel, I'd be well confident about this season.
Maybe I'm deluded? ;)

(Save our Sluggy friends from adding it!) :hihi:

i think we can, and did last night, attack without going "gung ho" from the first second - im just of the opinion that away from home against a team who are one of the favourites for promotion it would be far too risky to have 2 wingers who blow hot and cold (jj especially) and dont always track back (esajas especially) would have left us incredibly vulnerable on the flanks. nolan looked quiet last night and thats tesimant to our midfield for doing that.
we might look a bit fragile at the back but last season we were rock solid (well, at home) and hopfully when we decide who is going to be our first choice pair in central defence we will grow solid again

They said that Toon dominated throughout! that`s totally wrong!

True,we had a lot of possesion but didn't create many chances, sat with Geordies, had to give a little clap when they scored, hated it but thought safer.
JJ looked dangerous on occasions but most of runs came to nowt,Jeffers should have scored.
