View Full Version : Ideal pet for my 11 year old?? alls972 17-08-2009, 15:45 hi my son turns 11 next month and all he wants is a pet to look after, he dosent want fish tho!! ive no idea what to get him, was thinking about a hamter anyone got any other suggestions?? blossom2 17-08-2009, 15:48 What about a rabbit? A hamster sounds like a good idea fairly easy to look after even though give him a few months and it will be up to you lol! so make sure it's something you like aswell:) hamster or small rabbit is ideal for his age. good luck whatever you buy:) shorty558 17-08-2009, 16:04 what about a cat? There's a stray hanging around my mums, soooo skinny so she feeds it. He's soooo lovely and affectionate and great with kids as my nephew and niece have played with him. simplymel 17-08-2009, 16:09 Guinea pigs make fantasic pets! Easy to look after, affectionate, easy to handle and can be quite talkative. Its good fun learning what different squeeks mean. Ive got four :) helenasq 17-08-2009, 16:37 I've got baby rabbits and guinea pigs for sale. If you was interested you could bring him round to have a handle of some of my own pets and see if he liked either of them :) Lexi 18-08-2009, 00:53 Rats!! They make lovely pets, They are like little pet dogs :D lottie_s 18-08-2009, 07:42 Definately a couple of guinea pigs. They make lovely noises and have great personalities! *Peaches* 18-08-2009, 08:36 Guinea pigs - 110% chrissy84 18-08-2009, 09:57 Ducks? and you get eggs everyday too :) bobgirlsnake 18-08-2009, 10:43 how about a snake or a lizard? my 4 yr old has his own corn snake and leopard gecko he looks after himself, he gets them out and feeds them on his own even cleans them out. he also helps me with day to cleaning of all our other reps. carpetviper 19-08-2009, 14:19 how about a snake or a lizard? my 4 yr old has his own corn snake and leopard gecko he looks after himself, he gets them out and feeds them on his own even cleans them out. he also helps me with day to cleaning of all our other reps. Corn snakes make great pets as they only require feeding once a week and are different to the usual rabbitt hamster or cavvy. They dont make any noise and apart for a few minutes immediately after going to the loo they do not smell. They are fairly cheap to set up and are easy to keep and they will outlive almost any other pet. Lizards are also great geckos are better allthough they can be a little more expensive to set up and most will require live food. I personally favour tortoises and they have loads of charachter and they eat veg and fruit so no bugs for you to have to keep.:D Frisbee95 19-08-2009, 16:49 I'd suggest a reptile or spider....something that doesn't matter if you forget to feed it EVERY day (be honest, we all know what kids are like!) sezbetz 19-08-2009, 16:59 It really depends wat space and time your family have as much as anything. Do you want something fairly low maintenance or something that requires a lot of attention every day? Does he want something that is 'interactive' or purely something to love and look after? It also has to be something you are keen on in case he gives up on it after a while!! lol I have had many different pets but would say that my kids (younger than 11 though) have got the most from the guinea pigs chickens and ferrets. Although I would not say that ferrets are a childs pet - they are mine and the children enjoy them. The chickens and guinea pigs we have had though the kids really enjoy and can maintian themselves. cornishmaid 19-08-2009, 17:19 Having had six children , I would say that the right pet for an 11 year old is one that you will be happy to look after yourself ! kate alls972 19-08-2009, 20:33 thankyou for all your suggestions, my son has now decided he wants to keep the corn snake that we were trying to rehome for a freind who has had to move back in with his parents that dont want the snake in the house!! sorted 2 problems in 1!!! carpetviper 20-08-2009, 20:11 Personally I think you made a great choice pics would be great Tess 21-08-2009, 12:31 Guinea Pigs! I had two when I was tiny and they always will be my favourite little pets, (besides dogs of course!) its just a shame I developed such an allergy towards them :( Edit: Just seen that your son has got a snake now..oops! Maybe keep the Guinea Pigs well away in that case :hihi: |
