It does seem unbelievable and horrific to us that someone would do such a thing doesn't it? in different places of the world they have an entirely different outlook on animals.
Awful and repugnant as it is to us I suppose so long as the dog was well cared for in its life and humanely killed it is no worse off than any other animal killed for meat

I see no harm in it, a lot of fuss over nothing.

Wish I'd killed mine, vets charge too much.

To the contrary. They can be treat like livestock and become a relatively cheap meal high in protein.

I can understand that in some underdeveloped, countries dogs, cats and horses are considered to be meat animals. I cannot understand the need for this in civilised, modern countries and find it hard to believe the NZ doesn't have a law against this! There are plenty of animals already farmed for meat around the world- cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, turkeys etc. I have a real problem with animals perceived as pets being used for meat, afterall a dog is 'man's best friend' and both dogs and horses have served mankind throughout the centuries and helped shaped the history of the world. I personally feel it's disrespecful towards these animals to treat them so unhumanely. Horses and dogs have been instrumental in helping mankind throughout wars and conflict. Horses and dogs are still used to help people now - think police, mountain rescue etc, I think we owe them a little more rather than treating them as a potential meal.
Just my humble opinion.

It doesn't say anywhere that the dog was a long standing pet of his. I personally am really uncomfortable with this but then again I am uncomfortable with eating all animals. I have spent a lot of time around farm animals as well as household ones and therefore don't necessarily see how one is more valid and worthy then the other. How is this so very different from eating pig, cow or sheep?

Agreed.

I personally couldn't eat dog. It's a strange (and probably wrong to many people) thing as I do eat meat.

If the dog was kept and killed humanely it is no different to eating any other animal. The dog knows nothing about it.

In some cultures it is perfectly normal to eat dog, amonst other meats that we would choose not to.

I personally can't get my head around killing a pet and eating it - I couldn't kill and eat a chicken if I'd kept it as a pet, despite enjoying eating chicken in general.

However - what he did doesn't make him evil, or wrong - it's his culture and he has said he will go against that so as not to offend people in future which is more than can be said for many.

Pig cow sheep are not fluffy wuffy cuddly wuddly animals.

A lot of people keep pigs as pets... and chickens... and rabbits... and ducks...

it is generally accepted here to eat all of those!

In a way I think eating pets who've been loved and led a varied, interesting life and been well looked after is a lot kinder and more realistic then eating battery chickens or intensively farmed cows....

I agree bogwoppit. It has to be kinder, but I couldn't do it.

My mum was brought up with farming family and they often had animals going to slaughter that they had reared and lived closely with and they were fine with it - to mum it was a perfectly normal thing (although I think she has gone soft as she's gotten older!) but, probably due to my upbringing, I simply couldn't!

Exactly. Just perception thats all. Cows, Pigs, Chickens etc are all viewed as food, and dogs only as pets. They are all animals though and it is no more or less justifiable to kill and eat one because it is a pet
