View Full Version : Kennel Cough? would you take to vets
We have noticed boss is coughing and seen as though he has come back from the kennels i would say it is kennel cough
i have been reading the old threads about it and unsure what to do
shall i try him on some cough medicine or take him to the vet for antibiotics which seems pointless
hels1977 17-08-2009, 09:39 I thought most kennels insisted on Kennel Cough vaccinations for all inhabitants (cannine ones anyhow)? Was Boss vaccinated? I would phone the vet prior to going in so they know you're bringing a highly contagious animal in if required.
ive booked an appt but been reading old threads about using cough medicine
We tried benyline for out when they caught it. Calpol by syring helps with temperature, and benylin helps relievs the airwaves.
We had ours jabbed because the recue boy was so ill with it, however by the time the symptoms ar showing the vaccines too late anyway.
Also try vit c tablets and echinacea tablets.
thanks willman xxxxxx i thought as much xx
No probs - when we took the big lad the vet told us to prepare for the others catching it.
He advised(ans old me) Benylin original, calpol, and a drop of tcp in the water to help with sore throat infections from coughing.
Other people also recommend colloidal silver
ive just found a bottle of beechams venos dry cough shall i give him 1 teaspoon 3 times a day like an adult dose
Amy the only medicene he can have is childrens Benylin dont give him venos. The kennel cough will not clear up with the medicene you will still need antibiotics.
What Gemima says is true. We had an infection run rife around here because someone didn't get any antibiotics for their dog. It went on and on and while the primary symptoms had gone, the dog was still contagious.
It's really important to get your dog (and others) protected.
ill get childrens benylin today thanks guys xxxxxxx
claire1976 17-08-2009, 12:23 Benylin really isn't going to do much and is probably not licenced for use with dogs. Kennel cough is a disease of the respiratory system caused by a mixture of viruses and bacteria.
There is no specific treatment plan for it because there are so many strains of it. Antibiotics are sometimes prescribed to prevent pneumonia as a result of bacterial infections. Steaming is quite a good treatment method as kennel cough is usually a dry hacking cough. Try taking your dog into the bathroom and let the shower run on hot for a few minutes.
Cobijobi 18-08-2009, 12:21 I would take him to the vets if he is ill but if he is fine then just ease the symptoms with the benylin. It won't cure it only ease it. It usually runs it's course within a couple of weeks, but if he starts being ill, off his food and/or lethargic then go straight to the vets to get some antibiotics to help treat the cause. Sometimes it just sounds worse than it actually is.
Some kennels insist on the kennel cough spray and others don't bother.

The vaccine doesn't cover all strains of Kennel Cough so it's still possible to pick it up despite being vaccinated...
I think if it were Takara (who is 4), I'd just keep an eye on her and not allow her to socialise with other dogs for a while unless she was particularly bad in which case I'd call my vet and ask what to do - she'd tell me whether to go in or leave it.
If it were Eddy, who is 14.5 years old, I'd be panicking!
pets@home 18-08-2009, 13:06 unless your dog deteiriates then the benilyn should be fine but if he starts getting worse then he may need anti `s, but in general kennel cough is only equivelent to our flu, some of us get through it ok some need antibotics
Kennel Cough is a bacteria / viral hybrid. It's not equivalent to our flu, as that's a singular viral infection.
Antibiotics are prescribed to prevent secondary bacterial infections and to give the pooch a boost, but antibiotics do little against viral infections (that's why you need an antiviral agent for the flu virus H1N1 and they don't prescribe standard antibiotics - 'cos they don't do any good).
Best method of recovery for a standard infection is lots of rest and keeping them away from other dogs.
But remember, without medical assistance, your dog can carry the infection for several months after...
angellic 18-08-2009, 15:45 I know a lot of rottie breeders use kids benylin and some honey in water

you do need to take to a vet and get antibiotics, why would you not take your doggy to the vets when he clearly needs to go ?
