Trying to think of some not so run-of-the-mill girls names, yet by the same token, some not so wacky and weird names either! Any suggestions for strong, unique girls names?

Any suggestions for strong, unique girls names? lovabulrogue 21-07-2005, 09:02 I named my girl (she's nearly 5 now) and chose Zahra. But I had a long list to start with, and it was my job to name the child, it was either gonna be Zak for a boy or Zahra for a girl. I actually like Honey now ? Also the following - Olivia, Kirsten, Hannah, Sophie, Lydia, Amy. A little out of the norm and not too hippy (apoogies to all the hippies) Modesty 21-07-2005, 09:16 Their's loads of great names to choose from (It's part of the fun) but personally I would'nt choose Lola at the moment. It seems their's hundreds of them sprouting up! sugarnspice 21-07-2005, 09:16 Millie, Isla, May, Leila, Violet..... There used to be some good baby naming sites where you can search by using meanings, origin andnumber of syllables. http://www.babynames.com/ pdrnsf 21-07-2005, 09:26 Lilly, Tianna, Ruby. ilaria 21-07-2005, 09:33 i chose the name jacqueline for my 3mnth old daughter. sugarnspice 21-07-2005, 09:37 My 11 month old is Lily Rose and if I ever went on to have any more baby girls I would probably contine the floral theme and have a Daisy or a Poppy, Fern or Holly etc. Fragonard 21-07-2005, 09:40 Many of those sound like early 1900s names! I need something that will go with the middle name of Elizabeth. Am struggling cos me and my other half have opposing taste in names. banesmabes 21-07-2005, 09:41 I like some of the old-fashioned names, names people have heard of and know, but that you don't see many little girls called these days. So something like Elsie - which I think is a very pretty name. sugarnspice 21-07-2005, 09:42 Originally posted by banesmabes I like some of the old-fashioned names, names people have heard of and know, but that you don't see many little girls called these days. Jan39 21-07-2005, 09:43 What about Freja (Freya), Fransisca or Amelia? cruella 21-07-2005, 09:44 Why not go for the most common names ive heard shouted in public....... ..." Nahhhh then! " ...." Gett-ere ! " .... " Behave ye sen ! " .... These all seem very popular. ;) Sultana 21-07-2005, 09:45 I rememmber how hard it is to choose names. A lot depends on your last name too, if your surname only has one syllabale, then the first name needs more than 1. For girls, I always liked Anna or Hannah, also I like Judith which you dont hear very often. Hannah Elizabeth seems to trip off the tongue, but it depends on your surname. Good luck! sugarnspice 21-07-2005, 09:46 Good suggestions Jan, Amelia's a very pretty name. Can't stop thinking about names now! Edie, Lorna, Molly, Scarlet..... psyn 21-07-2005, 09:50 If my son had been a girl, he would have been either Amalie or Matilda. whisper 21-07-2005, 09:52 http://www.names2be.com/girls2.html there are some girls names on here viking 21-07-2005, 10:00 By the time your little girl starts school, these "British" names will fit in nicely: Sabihah: (Beautiful, Graceful) Aafia: ( Good, healthy) Fahimda: (Intelligent, wise) Dhakigah: (Bright, Intelligent) bornandbred 21-07-2005, 16:25 I've got 2 sons but a girl would have been called Eve. Just before my second son was born I fancied Meredith shortened to to Merry for a girl, my husband was relieved that we had another boy. NicoleM 21-07-2005, 17:08 How about Evie. I think that's a nice name, or Madeleine is also nice. sexibabe 21-07-2005, 17:10 My little girl who's now 3 is called Olivia-Jo. I also wanted something a bit unusual and loved Olivia but it is a popular name at the moment so we decided to make it double barrelled. Jo is after my sister who's thrilled we named our child after her! Good luck. Draggletail 21-07-2005, 17:23 I quite like 'Lucy' :) Kthebean 21-07-2005, 17:32 I have always thought Shanti was a lovely name. Isabella, Sophie, Charlotte and Victoria are all lovely, I think. Also Lucy and Joanna. For more modern names Kira and Courtney are nice, but unfortunately they seem to have been taken over by the chavs! :( StarSparkle twinky1 21-07-2005, 20:30 Grace, Mary, Georgina, Charlotte or Elizabeth is a lovely first name Hels 21-07-2005, 21:12 A friend of mine called her daughter Brogan (i'd never heard of it before). I also knew someone called Grainne Some other more slightly unusual names - Mercedes, Paris, Vienna, Greer, Zandra, Morgan, Calista, Carmen Norton 21-07-2005, 21:33 I like the name Lola. Don't think they'd be too impressed about being named after a transvestite in a Kinks song though :) Shiesh 21-07-2005, 21:54 Mia (Miah) Elizabeth sounds nice......or Caitlin Elizabeth.....I like the differant but 'non Chav' names so if I was expecting a girl I like the above! Norse? What are these? Phonetic pronunciation? My daughter's middle name is Roisin (pronounced 'Ro-Sheen'), which is Irish Gaelic for 'Rose'. I like unusual names. :) the_rudeboy 21-07-2005, 22:08 We had a shortlist of around 5 or 6 girls names....Bethany was the fave. But when our daughter was born it just didnt feel right so we chose a completely different name.....one not even on our shortlist. I think having a list is a good idea but if i was you i wouldn't pick a name and stick to it no matter what. See how you feel when your child is born......it paid off for us. redrobbo 21-07-2005, 22:13 Originally posted by sugarnspice My 11 month old is Lily Rose and if I ever went on to have any more baby girls I would probably contine the floral theme and have a Daisy or a Poppy, Fern or Holly etc. Poppy! That's my 83yr old mother's name! Hannah was my late grandma's name. My daughter is called Jenny (not Jennifer). I can recommend any one of these three names! PS. Mum was called Poppy because she was born on 11 November (Poppy Day). She hates her name though, as for her generation it is so unusual. Once, on her birthday, she was having her annual rant about her name, and cursing her parents for calling her Poppy, when a mate of mine said that he thought she should be very grateful to her parents - after all, they could have called her Armistice instead! :hihi: sugarnspice 21-07-2005, 22:15 Poppy is a scrumptious name! You go and tell her! pretty_woman 21-07-2005, 22:33 I always Liked Madeline or Maddie for short . I was going to call my eldest Hope but ended up naming her after a relative, old but it suits her . I like Lydia too and poppy or Masie . love PW xx Beakerzoid 21-07-2005, 22:56 Our first daughter was Anastasia Louise. Our next daughter will be Eloise Rose. kblade 21-07-2005, 22:58 I love the name Skye for a little girl :) Apollo_C 22-07-2005, 09:13 What about Alicia? joyphil 22-07-2005, 09:18 Go on, be daring and accept that your kids' names are part of what you're all about. Wear your aspirations on your sleeve, like the bloke I spotted in the paper once. He's from North Sheffield somewhere. His two delightful daughters are called Portia and Carrera, but I don't know if he's been able to buy the car of his dreams yet. StarSparkle 23-07-2005, 14:11 I was thinking a bit more about this thread, and I just thought that Katy Elizabeth sounds really nice. Anyway.... StarSparkle :) robbie 23-07-2005, 14:14 I like the name Pella (the moon goddess) Strix 23-07-2005, 14:34 Mr Strix still favours 'Tricity Bendix' I hope we don't have a girl :suspect: karenjane39 23-07-2005, 15:23 How about Caitlin? My little girl is Caitlin - Irish form of Katherine:) Sierra 23-07-2005, 17:19 Choose wisely, 'cause you'll be hearing it for a long time! lol. I wanted to name my girl Jacqueline, or Megan, or Brooke. (she's now 17) Her father didn't like any of those. We finally settled on Victoria. A family name on my mother's side. But I was dreading hearing her called Vicki, because every Vicki I'd ever known was a complete ditz. (apologies to any non-ditzy Vickis) Surprise. At age 8, she announced she would be called Tori from then on. Which left me explaining to people that NO. I did NOT name her after that girl on Beverly Hills 90210. http://www.tori-spelling.com/ Imagine her glee when she spotted this. http://www.epinions.com/kifm-Barbie-Basic_Barbie_Dolls-Generation_Girl_Tori Barbie named a doll after her! Yet more names. http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/newborn/popularnames_2001.html Good luck. Pick something pleasing to the ear. (Especially when you're screaming it over the phone at 2 a.m.) Kidding! Just kidding! :) Sierra mistyraven 23-07-2005, 20:12 i was going to call my little girl ERICA..... then I was watching the race,s and saw a horse named, EBONEY JADE... so I called my little girl EBONEY JAYNE.. sad I know... but it,s a lovely name . well I think it is . trophyman 23-07-2005, 20:30 if we hadnt had a boy 2 years ago we where going to call our chloe victoria good mixture of modern and old Ann* 23-07-2005, 20:41 When choosing a name for your little girl, may I suggest that you think very carefully about whether the name could have other connotations or can be turned into something else, e.g. Lucy = loose elastic, etc. My sister had twin girls about six weeks ago, and she named one Tamara, which will probably be shortened to Tammy, which has its own connotations, and the other she named Kaylin (I had to check with two people to make sure that it wasn't Katelyn), and my first reaction to that was "oh...kaolin and morphine", when one of my other sisters told me. I actually think that Kaylin is quite a nice name, but my first reaction to it wasn't good. FairyNormal 23-07-2005, 21:39 When I was pregnant with my second child, I had chosen Tehya for a girl. It's North American Indian and means Precious. I ended up with a boy lol! I do love the names Esme, Lola and Tilly. anabel 24-07-2005, 11:46 if my son (felix) had been a girl, he would have been...ahem, Fuchsia, Sunshine, Madeleine, Orchid or Ocean, I'm better now, thanks!!! sugarnspice 24-07-2005, 11:48 When I was 3 I told my Mum I was going to have a boy and a girl: Cheeky Charlie and Little Miss Sunshine (?). Well, I was 3! I now have my Cheeky Charlie but when I had my little girl... I just couldn't go through with it! weenireeni 24-07-2005, 13:28 ever since watching romy and michelle's high school reunion i have loved thee name romy, so if i had a girl i would call her romy lydia, not sure if romy elizabeth goes though...?! good luck :) noseyrosie 24-07-2005, 13:39 Originally posted by Hels Some other more slightly unusual names - Mercedes, Paris, Vienna, Greer, Zandra, Morgan, Calista, Carmen Unusual? Not on the manor they're not. Check the old chav names thread and most of these are on them, as well as the ever-charming girl called Sheffield from my friend's old school. What's that? Prejudice? Me? Surely not... Liking 'Greer' though. Who'da thunk old Germaine would start inspiring names for sprogs? spinny 24-07-2005, 13:42 My sister named her daughter now 10 Reagan. No one had that name befor as she wanted something diffrent,Now we know at least 4 other Reagans in sheffield. "Ooh Bart.... that's a nice name.. now can it be altered into something nasty?" "let's see..." "Art, Bart, Cart, Dart, Eart... " nope, nothing wrong with that, so Bart it is!" lol I am a bit traditional, with names; for my kids, I'd have liked, for a girl, names like Emily, Charlotte, Elisabeth/ Elizabeth. Elis/z/abeth is a traditional name on my mother's side, as a middle name, each generation has had an ---- Eisabeth. My great gran was gladys Eliz' , my gran was Gladys Eliz', too. My mother was an Irene Eliz'. I have cousins, Sarah Eliz, and Siobhan Eliz, my sister is Donna Eliz'. Had all things been equal, and my mother had been allowed to give me the name she wanted for me, instead if being given the name my grandmother wanted, I'd have been christened Julie Elizabeth. For a son, I would have used my Great-grandpa's name, Elias, which is the greek for Elisha, (i think:- it could be Elijah) his given name was Elias Joseph. When I was married to my ex-hubby, he wanted to use Irish names for any children we might have had, because of his Irish roots, so his choices were "Liam Padraig" for a boy, and "Megan Eilish" for a girl. (Eilish is the gaelic for Elizabeth, so I'd have been okay with that). You have to be so careful with naming your child, as it's something that they will have to carry for life. Some names can be a real burden for a child to carry, or to live up to. Some can be an embarassment. Also, you have to be very wary about not chosing a name that will clash with the child's present, or future surname. (for example, if it's a girl-child, and she takes on her husband's name on marriage) PT Darkdreamer 24-07-2005, 15:33 I love the names Eve or Ava and Samantha and an old friend of mine is nameing her baby after ME!!! Joanna ;) lizzmobile 24-07-2005, 20:53 My daughter is called Andorra (Elizabeth Jean), as hubby and I met there in 1996 and decided WAY before the beckhams were doing their mad name thing to call an eventual daughter as such whilst we were still on the ski lifts. Eliz is in the family and Jean was hubby's wonderful mother's name. Andorra bears her magnificent copper crown too. To my knowledge there are no other Andorra's in Sheffield. Or Yorkshire, or even the Universe, but I'm quite happy to be proved wrong. We waivered on Zoe and Mathilda Maryse after a wonderful woman who gave me a home in Paris many years ago. Also liked Willow, Ruby. PT, we have the Elizabeth thread all through our family, it's so versatile. The name you give your child is really important as it conveys so much about yourself, how you feel about the child and about the world. If you just call them any old name, you will have to bear the consequences so its nice to see people finding so much meaning in names. absynthfairy 25-07-2005, 09:19 My nieces are Faime and Kalyca (Kal-ee-ka). My sister wanted them to never meet anyone with the same name as them and so far so good! I'm a teacher and am really worried about the time I have to name a child of my own - I am put off so many nice names because I associate them with not so nice children! So many unusual names are just common now - I have a class with 5 Jordan's (3 boys, 2 girls) R_kid 25-07-2005, 12:46 Originally posted by Fragonard Trying to think of some not so run-of-the-mill girls names, yet by the same token, some not so wacky and weird names either! Have had a NIGHTMARE (understatement) as me and the other half have totally opposing taste in names. He hates what I love, and vice versa. Will keep you posted. I like more traditional names - they don't date and sound classical. PIPER1978 15-08-2005, 19:26 My favorite name for a little girl would be Imogen. I also like Erin. Pipine 15-08-2005, 20:59 Despite previously vowing never to have kids I seem to spend a fair amount of time pondering girls names.. think its my biological clock telling me something... I would probably go for... Bea Amelie Daisy (tho this is super popular at the mo) Althea With Hope as a middle name as its my grandmas middle name. RazzleDazzle 15-08-2005, 21:25 Heres a few i think are quite nice- Abigail, Rosanna, jessica, Bethany, Zoey and Gracie-Mai. Hope i helped =] pattricia 15-08-2005, 21:28 What about Pattricia with two tees . Im sure know one else is called that. msdiane 15-08-2005, 22:41 I was pregnant in 1989, if it was a girl she would havebeen named Nevenka!!!!! Thankfully though I had a boy and picked Zachary so not too bad Don't pick a "today"name though I remember the 80's and people calling kids Kyristal and such after Dallas stars This maybe a new thread starter "who were you named after" Fragonard 21-08-2005, 09:46 Imogen would be my first choice...but my other half hates it. Think we have chosen our names now....after hours of pain-staking list making and arguments over whether Chantal (CHANTAL???????????????I ASK YOU!) is appropriate. Sorry if you are called Chantal. Just not a favourite of mine...to say the least! PopT 21-08-2005, 21:14 How about looking in the Bible. You will find plenty of names in there and I'm sure you'll find one you will like. Happy Days Lexxy 22-08-2005, 04:36 Valentine is a beautiful girls name. or tulula! lol prefer Alexandra! think thats a great name lol alex or ali for short aim'n'Mark 22-08-2005, 12:06 My elsest is 14 and is called Jack Daniel, no not because its my fav drink but just because I liked the name. Our middle one who 10 is Heather Laura, not sure where Heather came from, but Laura is a middle name that has been given to the first girl of each generation in my family. Then our newest addition who is just 7months is Phoebe Cate. She was going to be Lily Mai through most of my pregnancy, but then it seemed to get popular. With all of mine I have had a list of names, but when they arrive they dont seem to suit any name you have picked. Good luck anyway and let us know what you choose.. teflon 22-08-2005, 12:33 what about charlie i think that is a good name for a girl unusual but good all the same  speenie 22-08-2005, 12:43 I teach kids so I thought I'd throw you some names of the under 10's, in no particular order: lois, laura, amy, charlotte, emeila, bronte, abigail, megan, maddy, chloe, hannah, katie, melissa, morgan, courtney. My friend had her baby last week and called her Kya. fosy 22-08-2005, 20:56 Girls names I really like are as follows: Emma Harriet Clara Grace Good luck Hels 23-08-2005, 01:52 It's funny how names move in and out of fashion isn't it? My paternal grandmother was called Lucy (she would have been 105 had she still been alive) and my maternal grandmothers name is Lily. I like the name Lily, but gran hates it  It's funny though, no matter what names you think of, when you see your baby for the first time, you think of another totally different name. When I was pregnant, my daughter was going to be called Danielle, but when she was born she was a Julia. Julia Elaine (diminutive of Helen) Marie (name ran in 1st husbands family). So her initials are: JEMM - quite appropriate because she'd my little GEM - she'll be so embarassed when she reads this! tots 23-08-2005, 19:45 when i was pregnant my daughter (5yrs) was going to be called India but when she was born we changed the name to Ocean. At first some ppl thought it was a bit strange but now everyone thinks its lovely and suits her cos she is one of a kind. jessycar 23-08-2005, 19:47 I really like the name Aisling (pronounced Ashling). Also like Grace, Eloise, Alicia (Alyssia, not Aleesha), Imogen. I know a little girl called Remy. Although I've a few years yet before deciding all this. Good luck choosing and let us know what you decide :) sparrow0114 23-08-2005, 20:26 Hmmm...I like unusual names, too, but wold like to add two things from personal experience. 1. If the name is too unusual, she will spend her entire life answering the question 'how do you spell that', send certificates, passports, bank account applications etc. back because they've been misspelt and are therefore illegal, accept mail with spellings that look however remotely connected to her name, and will probably arrive at a point here, when people ask her how it's pronounced, she'll go: oh, any which way, take your pick, I answer to most things'. 2. I would have loved a name or a middle name I could have passed for a boy's name - I was such a tom-boy and had great fun not telling strangers I was a girl. My name gave it away. Therefore...Kerry or Robin :) gorgon 24-08-2005, 20:12 ive got a Ruby (13) when she was born everyone thought we had cursed her with a crap name, she is now ubercool, we have a Lily, (11), we call her Lil, shout it in morrisons and watch the old dears spin round , its funny!!, If we had another daughter we would name her Dorothy, Dotty .... its a great name, madelaine is my eldests second name, and we have a Florence and a Celeste as second name too, its very important to imagine yourself shouting the name in a supermarket ...... or imagine the doctors receptionist calling out the name, if it makes people look, its good.... you never forget a good name, it has to go with the surname though. best of luck gorgon 24-08-2005, 20:27 Hettie, Verity, Felicity, Fay, Freya,Grace,Matilda, Joy,Imogen, Francine, April, Lettuce was a victorian name , honest... have a boy and call him Spike... i have 3 wonderfull daughters and would love a son called Spike....
