does the council even remember that they are supposed to fix these when people report that the bulbs go.
talked to people allover sheff an they seem to take at least a monthor more to fix.
they put a roll of tape round em an then forget them again.
there are a total of 9 out in a small area in netherthorpe that have been out for 4 weeks now.

I see many stretches of road without street lights for weeks on end. It often crosses my mind that they could be trying to penny pinch.

I reported a street light and it was repaired in 7 days. They claim that the average length to fix a *reported* street light is 8 days, as claimed on this page: http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/in-your-area/street-force/street-lighting

The best thing to do is actually email them and then if they don't do it, just reply to the "ticket" and ask them for an update. By using email you then have a "paper" trail. You can email them at: http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sys_upl/templates/PT_AZServices/PT_AZServices_details.asp?ServiceID=263&pgid=4191&tid=68

Good luck and hope this helps - it worked for me :)

If it's a stretch of lights that's out then that's the responsibility of the electricity company, afaik. It means that it's more than just a lightbulb missing.

Of course but street lighting is an important issue and to be without lighting for a period of over 2 weeks is totally unacceptable IMO.

I'm not saying it's not important it was just an observation that the council is not responsible for solutions in all instances of streetlights being out.

I was not saying they was but they are the first point of call and any work carried out will surely need to be authorised by the council.

Yes this is true. When I reported a street light that didn't work they told me it needed to be reconnected to the mains by the power company. The council chased up the electricty company who then fairly promptly came out and fixed it. If I hadn't asked the council to chase them, I doubt it would be fixed today.

Max, I know you like to defend the council, but surely you can see it's their responsibility to keep the pressure on the contractors to actually fix things?

If you look at how this thread started you will see what I was on about. Granted, the council is meant to chase these things up but they aren't responsible for doing the work in every case. Yes Geoff, I do defend the council when they are being unjustly blamed for everything.

If the lights which Lickszz saw have been broken for weeks, then surely it's not unjust to criticise the council for failing to chase up whoever is meant to fix then? I understand what you are saying about a lot of criticism being unjust, but in this particular case it would appear the council have performed badly.

OK Geoff, you win. The council's to blame for not chasing it up.

I have just spoken to Streetforce who tell me these lights were repaired around the 4th Dec and they were notified yesterday that they were no longer working. There is a job card for them to be attended to by the 17th.

I forgot about the subject of streetforce and streetlights until today.

I recived an email from them thanking me for an email over ten days ago and the night repair team would be in the area this week, the problem they will have is that the lights were fixed only 2 days after I sent the original complaint.

I think there are some communication problems in the department but at least they got fixed.

There is a long stretch of lights on The Parkway which have been out for weeks, if not months, now. I can't ring the Council on my mobile to tell them (it is illegal, after all).

Does no-one from the Council ever drive along the Parkway - or do they have to rely on reports from the public before they do anything?

Why not ring or email the relevant department and ask them? While you're on the phone you could tell them about the lights.:D

This is sort of related to streetlights subject. Over the last decade alot of street furniture and buildings have had special lighting put in, but once the first bulbs have blown they never seem to get changed. for example. the star and telegraph building, the buildings on pinstone street above Somerfield, Lighting on the wall next to the millenium galleries, The catherdral square,Granted they have changed the lights on the stairs on the left hand side, but all the trees in the square also had up-lighters beneith them which have not worked in years.

I just feel its a waste of time putting this lighting in if it is not going to be used!. Ive noticed they are putting up-lighting in the trees on Eyre street and Charter row shopuld look nice as long as they are maintained!
