View Full Version : Beaches in yorkshire that allow dogs? elenab 16-08-2009, 17:27 we are going to the seaside and i was wondering where was best to go if we wanted to bring our pooch? x Evei 16-08-2009, 17:53 We went to Mappleton last week. It is south of Hornsea, there is nothing there but the beach is nice and sandy and we walked south along the beach for 2 hours and only saw 2 people. Then we nipped up to Hornsea in the car for fish and chips. Just check the tide times as the sea comes right in and the banks are dangerous as they are all collapsing into the sea. Quite sad to see the remains of houses clinging onto the edge and this can cause a bit of rubbish on the beach. There is a RAF bomb warning sign and we saw lots of dummy bombs on the beach that come out of the banks as the sea errodes it. Lots of fossils to be found too! Quite nice for a day trip if you take a picnic. We have also been to Cleethorpes, I hate the place but if you walk along the beach towards Grimsby they allow dogs on that part. EDIT: At cleethorpes be ready for a very muddy dog! elenab 16-08-2009, 18:00 ooooooooooo fossil hunting sounds fun! thanks!x drp215 16-08-2009, 20:29 Bridlington South Side you can walk dogs... for miles.... to fraisthorpe and beyond. cuddlycats 16-08-2009, 20:31 We took pippa to mablethorpe last year. Huge, wide beach. She loved it. diamond123 16-08-2009, 21:26 we have just come back from whitby with our dog and it was v dog friedly would def go back lovely beach dogs allowed and they are also allowed in lots of the pubs rotherhamgir 16-08-2009, 21:30 skipsea hornsea bridlington like been mentioned further up scarborough (parts of it fromw what i can remember) filey bogwoppit 16-08-2009, 21:36 we have just come back from whitby with our dog and it was v dog friedly would def go back lovely beach dogs allowed and they are also allowed in lots of the pubs It's funny you should say that cos we went to whitby at easter and we had a really hard time finding any pubs we could eat in with the dog and it said that large parts of the beach were closed off in the summer to dogs. All the same we had an amazing time, the walks are fab but got a bit frustrated with the pub situation. I love whitby so maybe we'll have to give it another bash... We have a caravan at whitby and dogs can't go on the beach there between May and September, think the nearest completely dog friendly beach we have been to was Saltburn up the coast from Whitby. Don't know about the pubs we just tend to stick to the site pub, and other than that we sit outside. But dogs are allowed on certain parts of Scarborough beach and Parts of Filey beach. katkin 17-08-2009, 11:49 Cleethorpes on the sandy dunes Cayton bay just outside Scarborough The far end beach at Bridlington (North pier?) Mablethorpe bits of Whitby too Hornsea lots of smaller beaches along that stretch are dog-friendly- there's usually somewhere on a beach where dogs are welcome- just check the signs where you park. We take Ailsa all over the UK and even in what we would expect to be nomn-dog friendly places, we've found lovely beaches for her to play on. Our very favourite place was Lulworth Cove in Dorset - we took Ailsa there a few years back and she had a fantastic time paddling in the sea next to Durdle Door! She's also paddled in the sea at Lyme Regis, along the Dorset coast, in St Ives and Newquay, lots of parts of Pembrokeshire, most of the north Wales coast, Northumberland (THE most dog-friendly beaches in the UK!) , Lincolnshire, Southport, Morecombe, Weston-Super-Mare, lots of bits of Scotland and the Sussex Coast (Brighton is lovely for humans but not very good for a dog, but Bognor Regis ias dog-friendly places). This year she's off to Norfolk with us - more new places to explore libuse 17-08-2009, 14:00 It's funny you should say that cos we went to whitby at easter and we had a really hard time finding any pubs we could eat in with the dog and it said that large parts of the beach were closed off in the summer to dogs. Its either/or in Whitby on the dogs in pubs front - the ones that do food aren't dog-friendly, and the ones that let dogs in don't really do food. The Black Horse on Church street is dog-friendly and does snacks (bread and olives-type stuff), and there's one up on Skinner St (can't remember the name of it but its the only pub on there) that does meals and is dog friendly. With the beaches, you can go on the Abbey side beach all year round, but the opposite side beach is only dog-friendly outside the peak season. bogwoppit 17-08-2009, 14:20 Its either/or in Whitby on the dogs in pubs front - the ones that do food aren't dog-friendly, and the ones that let dogs in don't really do food. Yeh definitely found that, it's a shame as if it wasn't for this would be perfect place for a short doggy holiday. Just come back from 2 weeks camping in scotland and the lake district and you're hard pushed to find a pub which won't let you in with the pooch... Everywhere should let em in if you ask me. Apart from the obvious benefits, I think it adds character and warmth to see dogs in a pub. The Black horse was persistantly packed when we went (think it might have been a bank holiday), but we'll look out for the skinner street pub next time. libuse 17-08-2009, 14:40 Yeh definitely found that, it's a shame as if it wasn't for this would be perfect place for a short doggy holiday. I remembered the Skinner St one - its The Granby, and I've also remembered that last time I was there a couple of months ago The Elsinore had started doing food and they are very dog friendly (one of those kind of pubs where the bar staff bring you a bowl of water for the dog) Sorry....I know this thread is about beaches, but Whitby pubs are one of my specialist subjects :) bogwoppit 17-08-2009, 14:45 I remembered the Skinner St one - its The Granby, and I've also remembered that last time I was there a couple of months ago The Elsinore had started doing food and they are very dog friendly (one of those kind of pubs where the bar staff bring you a bowl of water for the dog) Sorry....I know this thread is about beaches, but Whitby pubs are one of my specialist subjects :) I too am sorry for hijacking the thread but I would love for whitby pubs to becoem one of my specialist subjects :) Thanks loads and cheers for the advice! We went to Whitby in July for a long weekend. We took Evie as several people told me it was really dog friendly. In Whitby itself we only found one pub that would let dogs in and it was a right dive. Most of the main beaches do not allow dogs on in the summer months. And it was mobbed. Not great IMO. diamond123 17-08-2009, 18:44 the granby, the elsinore, the met, the resolution all do food and dogs are allowed inside the fleece inn doesnt do food but lets dogs in. the vineyard has a lovely court yard with heaters ect that dogs are allowed in and does food. i'm sure there were others thats names i cant recall. we were staying at west cliff and dogs are allowed on the beach (after the marker) all year round there? and i know this because there was lots of dogs on there and the owners of the b+b we stayed at have dogs and take theres on. the b+b was also dog friendly called the chiltern 4* AA rated lovely would stay again. elenab 17-08-2009, 19:22 thannks for the pub infor but anyone know anymore about beaches? how about scarborough> |
