View Full Version : What (if anything) do your cats catch and bring in the house?
I was thinking about this the other day - quite a few people on this forum constantly go on about how evil cats are for killing other animals for fun. We have a fair few, and I've never known them kill anything, let along bring it in. One of my wife's cats brought in a slice of pizza before I knew her and sat growling over it, but that's about their limit :) They certainly have the play instinct, and will sit chattering when they see birds in the garden, so are they just incompetent or lazy? Or are they so well fed that they've simply outgrown the need for mother nature?
The poll is (hopefully multiple choice). I've just remembered the fun our young cat had in spring when the rain brought worms out, so I've added those :) But I've ticked Nothing myself, because generally that's the case.
Oh and this thread is for cat-owners only, so if you've just come on to tell us how much you hate cats, go start your own thread :P
Heres my list of kitty related offerings...
An empty brid nest
An old chip pan filter :gag:
One really moldy old sock.. smelly
A live frog (may I add uninjured and returned to the pond)
A robin, again alive and well and returned to the wild .
Since she's getting on a little shes mainly sticking to leaves and twigs at the moment.
clogginchris 21-07-2005, 10:02 I have a cat who loves digging for worms (he's a bit stupid....). When it's been raining he comes in with his paws muddy, and mud all over his face, but really proud of himself because he has a worm in his mouth!
A previous cat of mine - who was quite small and delicate - caught rats. She used to leave the head, the tail and one foot on the doormat for me. One day she left them in our hallway - I got up and walked sleepily down the hall in barefeet, and then discovered I had a rats head stuck to my foot.
I've owned many cats over the years, and only very rarely have they caught birds.
valentine 21-07-2005, 10:06 Our cats have brought us,
mice, (depending on which cat sometimes only bits of them)
rat,
magpies, thrushes, sparrows, and on Xmas eve one year just after midnight we were presented with oneof next doors doves. ( we never did tell him)
Can Cats catch "Crabs"
and if so, can they claim for the Nippers?

louise170419 23-07-2005, 06:46 one of my cats love bringing mices or birds misus the heads, and leave them on the bottom of the stairs for me to tread on when im half asleep, lol so ive had to put my slippers on 1st thing in a morning, cos there isnt any thing better then a dead creature in between your toes.
I saw a cat the other day that looked as though it had caught the under side of a truck wheel. Best looking cat I have seen for ages.
littleboo 23-07-2005, 08:16 We live in a very wooded area so nature is rife, I have two cats ( well three if you count the one that turns up a couple of times a month) They have always caught birds, mice, worms, slugs, frogs and anything else that they choose to slaughter. they don't always kill them but 8 times out of 10 they do, but they do often leave them in the garden
last summer they went through a real phase 1,2,3 birds a day always brought in to the house......lovely.everymorningwhen I got up there was always feathers scattered around and I would have to play hunt the corpse. One moring I got up with my usual "Oh not again!!" and "where is it?" Walked into my lounge only to find a love bird. I don't know where it came from, or how they got it. I think that it had probably escaped and they had got hold of it....as clever as they are I dont thing that they could open a cage! and no one ever came forward to identify the body.
another stange story of cats my friend who used to live in my house her cat brought a squirrel in through the cat flap......don't ask!
I do think is awful that cats do these things, but its nature. But on saying that if I knew a way to stop them doing it I would!!
I have housed many soggy birds and let them dry out over night then released them the next day.
b1u3grass 23-07-2005, 13:10 well i think the worst phase our kitty's went through was pigeons, alive and dead. We had a rooftop garden and would catch an average of three a day!
also worms left in the toilet, so we'd see them first thing!
was impressed when mr. phil returned one night with a bat!
On the stranger side our newest moggy George at six weeks old, only just arrived disapeared behind the sofa and presented us a bird  the other three cats were also amased.
crowefan 23-07-2005, 14:19 a few years ago my cat joan
