View Full Version : Does anyone know of a good herp vet in the firth park area if not
Does anyone know of a good herp vet in the firth park area an if not then jus in sheffield ? as i have a 4 year old female leopard gecko that has recently developed a small lump behind her right front leg, that looks as though it hads fluid of some sort inside, as it is squidgey and not a hard lump, but i called a reptile shop for advice and i was told " if the leo has a fat tail and still proceeds to store fat it cud cause these small lumps, but too keep an eye on it incase it got any larger, and to alert a vet if so" and it has ever so slighty grown, although it doesnt seem to be bothering her at all.
CHEZZFAYE 15-08-2009, 23:52 you could try peak vets ther on woodseats they deal with allsorts of animals cant think of any other good 1s

thats what i would have also said as i kept them for 14 years and saw it often...
i cant think of any good reptile vets in sheffield, each time i went i had to tell them what it was and what meds they had to give me....
when i have seen turmours in gex, they lose weight as they fed the tumour, but then im no rep vet so that might not be correct for all tumours and cancers etc. can you take good close up fotos?
i will av a try at takin some photos now an hopefully get them on later
it says i have to make 5 posts before i can post a link to image lol so here it goes this is 3 =3
i have uploaded the pictures of her onto photobucket here are the links, there is also a picture of her in the viv, jus to show wat she looks like.

ok........thanks for the fotos, it clears a lot up now i can see it.
the first fotos, its NOT a build up of normal fat/storage, its in the wrong place and shape...from what you said earlier, it sounded like it....but its not, never seen that before.....unless it was agravid female, but the shape doesnt fit...can you please take some from underneath.
the last selection of fotos, of the male, i saw that, in mine, only once in 14 years, and no treatment at the vets worked.....and the gecko went blind, but in my case, as i rescued reptiles...so not as pets, time/handling together etc. it wasnt a problem, the gex learnt to understand when it was feeding time for it, and i had to hand feed it...it still lived in a large colony.....
there is a website, reptile forum UK....join that and post the picks (let me know when you do, i am very interested in what people say) there is a lot of good advice (and some crap!)
i can only comment on what i have come accross, and i have....but i know lots of fellow herpers can comment from more experiance in this

one we have had in has this and it was a fat pocket, i didnt think it could be at first so she went to the vet had it looked at and drained and it was.
second one is old shed and as said it will make the leo go blind if not taken out, we had a male in that had it in both eyes really bad we managed to get it out using warm milk and a cotton bud. then had to use antibiotic eye drops but i wouldnt think you will need them for this one as its no where near as bad as the one we had in.
berlingo 17-08-2009, 23:53 William Taylor used to be a vet at springfields @ firth park, Now at springfields on Moorgate rd Rotherham 01709 377241

KarlM1983 18-08-2009, 10:42 If you need it in future there are a couple of good rep vets based in Springfields in Rotherham
cooljules 18-08-2009, 13:38 Ah well its good news about the first of your concerns, i have just never seen them like that in 14 years...but learnt something new!
The 2nd i treat with something (forgot what now it was about 9 years ago) and by chance when William Taylor was at firth park...the whole treatment didnt work, and the milky thicky sticky build up got worse...and it gets hard off even when i tried to keep it moist and remove it...so much so in the end i hd to really be careful to remove it from over the eye with a v sharp pointy scalple which i wouldnt recomend for someone new to it...it still went blind but she lived for years like that (you could she went blind as she could not dilate her pupil etc) and had to be hand fed for months..and got used to it as when i opened the noisy door, all the others hid but she came to the front knowing it was feeding time...
over time she learnt her way around the viv and learnt to hunt for herself..and got very basic sight back, just enough to see basic movement so could then close in on food with her other senses...
and KarM1931, are you saying there are rep vets in Rotheram one?
I hope for god one isnt from NZ, who happened to be at the firth park surg last year...
we had a consignment of very bad WC tokays, and i took 1 of the 10 in has they were happy to give me the meds to treat at home, once they weighed a average one to work out how much i needed for a couple of months....
Well i wasnt happy with her dosage and recomended way to treat them...so i did 5 MY way, and 5 HER way....all my 5 lived, and her 5 died... i remember that day, she was asking me lots of questions about reps, infact so long we was there for over a hour...and she charged me for that hour, which was to be a free weigh...and just pay for the meds..
I have the fotos of how the tokays came in last year, and then how the ones that survived looked much later...you wouldnt belive they were the same ones

yeah just looked...
carpetviper 19-08-2009, 15:13 In my opinion the first gecko looks quite chunky and it could be a fat deposit
and the second looks like conjunctivitis.
But that is my opinion and Im not a vet but I do have the number for the reptile vet at springfields in rotherham at home I'll find it out for you when I get back.
It would be safer to have him check them out.
berlingo 19-08-2009, 15:33 All ready given the number further up the thread 01709 377241
berlingo 19-08-2009, 15:37 I hope for god one isnt from NZ, who happened to be at the firth park surg last year...
No he's not a NZ vet
carpetviper 19-08-2009, 15:47 I hope for god one isnt from NZ, who happened to be at the firth park surg last year...
No he's not a NZ vet
No I saw him the other week with my big boa and he didnt look too keen to come near it lol. I only wanted panicure lol.
thanks for all the advice guys i have made an appoinment at the vets for my male leo with his eye an i feel that the other is jus a fat lump as she is rather chunky lol
well i made an appointment to see a vet at springfield's in firth park, and specificaly asked if they see reptiles and they said yes, and i was astounded at her approach to the problem, she put on some latex gloves and approached the box i took him there in and then looked at him through the box?!?! to which i told her you do know you can take him out of the box, to which she said oh ok, proceeded to remove the lid and carried on looking at him in the box, not touching him at?!?! i basicaly had to tell her what was wrong with him, she tried to sell me calcium powder?!?! for retained shed?!?!? to which i said yes i already have some of that at home. She then left the room for around 10minutes?!?! and came back with some eye moistener gel, and when i asked her does he need that then? she replied well not realy its not that bad. and then we were charged £20-odd quid for her to basically say yep thats what it is and theres not much you can do about. Although relating back to this from bobsnakegirl

I was advised by the vet not to use milk on the eye as it contains sugars that are not good for infection, but as far as the rest of the diagnosis goes this may not be right either.
i also forgot to mention that at one point she was looking at the wrong eye and i had to tell her it was the other eye :loopy:
cooljules 27-08-2009, 19:00 i also forgot to mention that at one point she was looking at the wrong eye and i had to tell her it was the other eye :loopy:
yes, i have seen many so called vets like that, who say they know about reps....and its me who talks them through it...and im not vet, nowhere near.
Its pretty easy to pick up the gex, which you have to do to get a good look at it. never heard that about the milk, and no one i know has ever mentioned it, and i know herprs going back 30 years, twice as long as me (its them i ask, if i cant get a qualified rep vet )...i find a normal vet with reps, is like getting a mechanic to make a wedding cake......
Its a pity im not back in England for a weeks, i could show you how to clean it properly etc, and it could come to a point where to have to get really close upto the eye, and remove retained skin from it...which is nerve racking if you dont know what your doing....
cooljules 27-08-2009, 19:01 oh and selling you calcium powder for the retained shed...heard it all now
bobgirlsnake 27-08-2009, 22:29 well i made an appointment to see a vet at springfield's in firth park, and specificaly asked if they see reptiles and they said yes, and i was astounded at her approach to the problem, she put on some latex gloves and approached the box i took him there in and then looked at him through the box?!?! to which i told her you do know you can take him out of the box, to which she said oh ok, proceeded to remove the lid and carried on looking at him in the box, not touching him at?!?! i basicaly had to tell her what was wrong with him, she tried to sell me calcium powder?!?! for retained shed?!?!? to which i said yes i already have some of that at home. ive never known that be said before, ive used milk with a few and was advised by a rep vet it was good to use warm milk. if you want my partner to look at his eye for you let me know as he was the one who got rid of all the retained shed in the ones weve had in.
