RIZRAT 15-08-2009, 07:49 Hi Paul, I would say your best bet for barbel on the Don would be either the riverside business park stretch near meadowhall overspill car park or the deep stretches up Neepsend. A mate of mine has had barbel up to 6lbs from the riverside stretch on luncheon meat or cat food !! SchMilner 15-08-2009, 08:52 The carp at rivelin were at the first pool up from Malin bridge.....Wolfe pond i think its called......not many, but of a half decent size. Since the floods of 2007 as far as i know most of the fish ended up in the river which runs next to it, I've not seen any sign when i've fished it (I don't bother anymore). possible though that the E.A. have restocked it owlman1 15-08-2009, 11:44 i caught barbel on the don years ago, behind the powerstation at the back of owlerton stadium, you can drive so far from hillfoot bridge end and walk the rest, fish below waterfall behind the powerstation.large carp in crookes valley park but only a few, best place is tinmill dam at deepcar but need a permit koikeeper 15-08-2009, 12:46 tinmill dam at deepcar but need a permit £30 , if yu go on river for barbell look for gravel bars and weirs barbel loves them paulwhiteley 15-08-2009, 18:16 Great hopefully a Barbel will grace my landing net soon. pikie 15-08-2009, 19:17 you can def catch a barbel at niagra falls which is situated right at the back of winn gardens estate, down by the side of the football pitches. its very snaggy though. best method is worm, fished with plasticine as weight(attached with a thin wire spiral), so it pulls off in snags. fish tight to the weir. you will also catch big perch and chub. ive landed barbel for friends up there at just short of 7lb, and had them myself to 2 1/2 lb. was speaking to the E.A who said that the don around swfc has them up to 14lb! seeing is believing me thinks. Chris412 15-08-2009, 19:31 river rother at woodhouse mill one caught other week 8 pound depoix 15-08-2009, 19:36 aston ponds hold carp me and my two sons had over 13 out today all over the 5 pounds mark,we all missed quite a few as they tend to dodge the net and make a dash to the legs on the landing stages NanO'Second 15-08-2009, 19:44 Just a reminder for anyone fishing on the canal. Don't forget to leave the ashes from your fires, empty tins of sweetcorn, bread wrappers, empty Carling and Special Brew cans and plastic carriers, either in the canal or on the towpath for others to enjoy. mrs roo 15-08-2009, 21:58 Have a look on here plenty of water to go at http://www.ravenfieldponds.co.uk/ Mandem 16-08-2009, 10:59 My son caught a whopper barbel yesterday at Loxley Fisheries. Behind the Nags Head. The other one further up the valley (don't remember what it is called) is a lovely pond, but you can only fish until 7pm, so not much good after work. Ghostrider 18-08-2009, 21:59 I saw a 4 foot eel come out of the lake at dam house today - funny story behind it which I will post tomorrow.... Oddgitt 19-08-2009, 08:25 Plenty of pike in the Dam Flask, in fact thats all theren seems to be nowadays, we don't seem to catch much else. Really? I went there the other week and caught nothing - apparantly it's got a reputation for not giving up its fish very often. Halibut 19-08-2009, 09:40 I saw a 4 foot eel come out of the lake at dam house today - funny story behind it which I will post tomorrow.... Please do Ghostrider, I'm intrigued! boyface 19-08-2009, 10:09 river rother at woodhouse mill one caught other week 8 pound Interesting. Anyone know what permits you need to fish that river and what stretches you can fish? Cheers Ghostrider 19-08-2009, 10:35 Here we go... I took my daughter to weston park museum and afterwards took her to feed the ducks down at Dam House... We had been there about 15 minutes and there were a group of lads fishing, after a few minutes one of the lads went to speak to his mates - his fishing rod then shot off into the water ! He runs back to see it heading into the middle of the lake, so, after a minutes hesitation he strips down to his boxers and dives in.. He gets back to dry land and then realises theres something on the end of the line and starts reeling it in..... After a few minutes he lands an eel which was about 4 foot long :wow: Cue round of appaluse from the people in the beer garden that had seen it all happen... Wouldnt have beleived it if I hadnt seen it myself.. Halibut 19-08-2009, 11:00 Nice one! Bit brave of the lad to go into the water, don't think I'd fancy it. Ghostrider 19-08-2009, 11:07 I wouldnt have if I would have known that thing was in there, lol tallanddopey 19-08-2009, 16:32 ive stripped off and dived in before. i wasnt concentrating, and the top4 sections were just loose in my hands. a fish just took it straight into the middle of the pond. if it was my top sections i wouldnt have bothered, but my dad would have put a hefty bill in my lap (close to £300) if i hadnt have retrieved it. the things that graze your leg like weeds etc, feel extremely wierd. you can feel like something is going to pull you down. luckily the water was only 5" deep where the pole was being towed along behind the fish, i didnt fancy having to swim around. warbinton 25-08-2009, 09:29 Plenty of pike in the Dam Flask, in fact thats all theren seems to be nowadays, we don't seem to catch much else. Yes agreed, Dam Flask = Pike Central! Oddgitt 25-08-2009, 12:36 Yes agreed, Dam Flask = Pike Central! Really? Where abouts do you tend to go when you fish there? The 'big end' or the tapered end? I like the venue but was a little disappointed as I haven't managed to catch anything there yet and have had similar accounts by others. alex3659 25-08-2009, 12:40 Here we go... As for the four foot eel, are you sure your not a fisherman. tallanddopey 25-08-2009, 13:50 Really? Where abouts do you tend to go when you fish there? The 'big end' or the tapered end? I like the venue but was a little disappointed as I haven't managed to catch anything there yet and have had similar accounts by others. i havnt been there a few years so it may be different now, but back when i went there was a cove (well it was a decent sized cove) like place with an in/outlet at the side of it. you may not be able to see the outlet as it may be under water, but on the otherside of the road there is a stream that rins into/out of the dam. that used to be a good place to fish whether it be for pike or whatever. i cant picture where it is on the lake though as i havent been for a while so i have no directions and my decription may be poor. i allways found the thin bit to be pretty poor. and the big side where the wall is, if you fish a few 100metres down the bank it can be very good for bream, but you have to be patient. alex3659 25-08-2009, 13:54 The Bream at dam flask are known to be some of the hardest in the country to catch. You have to fish really light for them. Great, thanks T&D. Can you recommend any others venues for pike & perch? (other than the canals!) Tried the Stainforth @ Mauds Bridge last week - lovely venue but didn't manage anything. Not having much luck with this fishing game! paulwhiteley 03-09-2009, 06:29 Has anyone fished at Catcliffe for Barbel? I have had fish at Meadowhall which was great. Runningman 03-09-2009, 08:07 Can't apologise for casting this into the thread, but can I ask if any of you Sheffield fishermen / women ever bother taking your litter home. Does all the garbage at the side of the canal from town to Meadowhall, at the side of Beauchief ponds and around the middle pond at Graves Park somehow blow there !! tallanddopey 03-09-2009, 08:30 Can't apologise for casting this into the thread, but can I ask if any of you Sheffield fishermen / women ever bother taking your litter home. Does all the garbage at the side of the canal from town to Meadowhall, at the side of Beauchief ponds and around the middle pond at Graves Park somehow blow there !! I allways endever to take mine home with me, or use a bin if provided. Im not going to lie and say i havnt left anything behind, because i probably have, either through dropping or simply missed it whilst packing away. my fishing box is a testiment to this, as at the moment it is full of pop cans and wrappers. however there is a large amount of fishermen out there who simply dont seem to care, they leave all manner of rubbish and it isnt an oversite. the problem is, if it isnt a paid venue then there is noone to police it and so they do as they please. Oddgitt 03-09-2009, 08:36 Can't apologise for casting this into the thread, but can I ask if any of you Sheffield fishermen / women ever bother taking your litter home. Does all the garbage at the side of the canal from town to Meadowhall, at the side of Beauchief ponds and around the middle pond at Graves Park somehow blow there !! I always check the area I've been fishing in for stuff I've dropped - and have even picked up other peoples litter. You've obviously got a bee in your bonnet about this - let's not turn it into a argument about littering. However taking into account the ratio of fishermen/women to walkers, dog walkers, bike riders etc etc that use the paths by canals and in parks, I'm not sure it's too fair 'having a pop' on here. I think you'll have to try quite hard to find an angler who doesn't respect the environment in which they practice their hobby. koikeeper 04-09-2009, 08:31 i all ways take my litter home even carry a carrier bag infact every mate of mine does the same even if its not there rubbish we even walk around the ponds or river bank picking it up some times it just joe public that drop litter as well Grandad.Malky 04-09-2009, 08:46 I would have thought “proper” anglers would look after the river banks maybe its kids or the dodgy fisherman that aren’t throwing them back that are leaving the mess. boyface 04-09-2009, 14:08 The vast majority of fishermen will take all their rubbish home (and any other stuff they see laying around). Sadly the odd person does leave stuff. What you have to keep in mind is that down riverbanks/along canals etc. are popular places for people to dump rubbish. It starts as a heap in one place and gradually blows about/gets moved etc. This is very common. Don't assume just because there is litter by a river/canal/pond etc. that it is the fishermen who have left it there. paulwhiteley 24-09-2009, 08:01 Has anyone fished loxley fisheries? paulwhiteley 14-08-2010, 15:19 Has anyone fished Loxley Fisheries recently would like a bit int as to wat bait to use and wat pegs. lewis1234 18-08-2010, 07:23 Aup im wondering if any 1 can help me ive started using the float on the rod and im wanting to catch some carp.
