That darned cat! First, he gets an abscess and ends up having to have £200+ dental treatment to remove some teeth then, a few weeks later, he gets another abscess!

So we're back to the vet this morning and I have to leave him to have it lanced. When I collected him, the vet said she'd taken a swab and it could be analysed to see if he had some sort of resistant infection, but it would cost £46. By the time I got out, the bill was over £90, and she hadn't even charged for the consultation or lancing, just for the meds and the swab test!

Poor lamb has got a shaved chop - with a slightly oozing hole in the middle of it - but when I got him home, he headed straight for the dried cat food. :loopy:

Would everybody please keep their fingers crossed that George's little problem clears up with the latest batch of antibiotics, otherwise he's off to a specialist for a scan to see if he's got a deep-seated problem behind his eye, which is draining into his top jaw. And gawd knows what that's going to cost me!!!

Oh God Dozy! Poor you, and poor George. And bloody vets charging the earth for doing very little!

Hope he makes a full recovery, for the sake of both of you, and your bank balance. Keep us updated. Chuffin' animals :)

Thanks. I'd send the beggar back, but I don't think Cats Protection would take him after I've had him for about 14 years! He does look funny, with his half shave, and I'm having to try hard not to laugh, because he'd get offended.

But he's got some Hills special diet food for his tea, which he adores, so he'll no doubt forgive me for making him suffer.

:hihi: Oh yes, Maddie looks very offended if you laugh at her for any reason, she stalks away and sulks for donkeys!! Very easily embarassed!

Yup, 'cos it's allllll your fault isn't it?! Why is it we get the bleeding blame for everything?

aww hope he's seen the last of it all now! Our rescue bengal Beauty went through a spate of infected abcesses very kindly donated to her my our other greeny-eyed monster barmy bengal Alfie- for the most part, they tolerate one another and even eat and sleep side-by-side, but occasionally, Alf decides to give beauty what-for and she always comese off worst. The first few times, she got abcesses where he bit her on the top of the head (ouch) but thankfully on the rare occasions they've disagreed since then, nothing's got infected - either he's not being as evil or else she's developed immunity to his sceptic bite. I was beginning to think we'd never be away from the vets at one stage and my poor purse was feeling the brunt of it all...

and what Beauty's ever done to deserve the attention I don't know- she's gorgeous (so I can only assume it's bungle jealousy on the part of Alfie even tthough he knows full well he is 'favourite baby')

Oh Dozy - I hope George's problem clears up and there's nothing underlying :( What a pain for both of you.

I hope he makes a speedy recovery :)

I had one cat who was forever getting abscesses because of bites, the first was on the top of his head, which was immediately interpreted by us as a brain tumour!! It's amazing how stupid you can be when you're new to cat ownership. :loopy:

The other two must have got the same number of bites/scratches from their occasional fights, but they never got infected. We decided his immune system must have been as weak as his brain, poor baby. :hihi:

It just doesn't get any better. Back to the vet's yesteday afternoon, results from the swab aren't back yet, but the abscess had filled up again. The vet took him off to drain it and the stuff he got out was red, rather than just pus.

He said he'd enlarged the hole from the syringe and that I'd need to squeeze it to get all the gunk out today. He said if I couldn't manage it, I could bring him back and he'd do it for me.

Well, I tried and tried today, but I think the hole must have healed up, because all I could get was a little drop of fresh looking blood. So guess who's back to the vet this afternoon??

And the vet mentioned the possibility of another operation - to clean it all out properly. He said there are lots of important nerves and muscles where the abscess is, so I suppose if they get damaged, it could stop him eating.

Oh, and Mina, t'other dog, has puked twice this morning, on an empty stomach, so not much, but I'm going to have to keep an eye on her, as well.

Hope he gets better soon!
