View Full Version : Advice please: Any areas where undesireable kids dont hang around?
Hello,
I bet this is an old topic (cant see one quite right though) but I am thinking of moving and dont really know sheffield that well. I dont want to seem like a snob but I would really rather avoid areas that have lots of chav kids with nothing to do but hang around causing trouble and have no parental control stopping them behaving badly (ok maybe I am sounding like a snob but I am sure you know what I mean). At the moment I live in lower walkey/hillsborough which i think is really great (have to move though) and did live in sharrow/cemetary road (which was pretty good but not great).
I know favourite area is a very subjective issue but I am looking for an area that is quiet (ish), not to far from town (regular buses or tram), somewhere I would be comfortable walking around, doesnt have nasty groups of kids, etc. It doesnt have to be trendy at all just "nice" (excellent descriptive word for you there) where people dont look at you a little like little britain thing and you dont get strife if you dont "fit in".
Anyone got any suggestions/ideas?
Thanks!
pete_jim 21-07-2005, 08:39 Children/Youths hang around in every area of Sheffield to a greater or lesser extent. You cannot escape this I'm afraid.
Your best bet looking at yr previous postings is the Broomhill area, yes you will suffer the dreaded student population but very few families live in Broomhill resulting in fewer groups/gangs of youths.
Psalter Lane going down towards Hunters Bar is another area that doesn't seem to attract groups either. We often walk in the evening down to Hunters Bar along Ecclesall Rd and back up Cemetery(sp?) Rd. Never feel threatened or intimidated apart from the occasional overflow from Champs blocking the pavement at the bottom of Ecclesall Road.
Don't imagine that prices of property or socio economic groupings have that much to do with it.

But they do..... just check the correlation between house prices and crime levels. They have quite a lot to do with it.
In answer to the original question, most areas in S10 and S11 are relatively free from "chav" groups, though as pete says there will still be a degree of it in any area, even in places like Hathersage. Without knowing your budget though it's difficult to recommend anywhere.
There's none of those types you mention in S10 and S11 davus78
but it's wrong to say it's for socio-economic reasons - the houses in hunters bar are mostly rented student accommodation, or young professionals. not many families, and if they are, then generally, they're middle class
Having said that, I've heard on more than one occasion, from reliable sources, that S10 and 11 have some of the highest crime levels in the city (burglaries, vandalism etc) whereas Burngreave has the lowest.
1Man&hisBMW 21-07-2005, 13:42 Chavs get everywhere (they tend to drive aswell you know, this new breed of chav!). I wouldnt buy a house on a postcode, go and have a look at the actual road. Its suprising how much difference it can make.
I have seen chavs in ringinglow, greystones, far up as high storrs school area. They just hang around in their cars rather then being on foot. They don't belong to a 'class', as such.

You heard wrong. S10 and S11 (and S17) have by far the lowest levels of crime in the city. The crime figures are freely available of the Council's website and I have quoted them several times on this forum. Stick to facts, not hearsay. ;)

Aparantly not, looks like Stocksbridge (S30 ?) is the place to be.
Moving away from the crime level analysis...
If we're talking pesky kids (which the topic was set considering) ...
FACT from experience in Ranmoor (S10) chav kids dont hang about because ... there isnt a central village area to do it.
the ranmoor village shops do occasionally see the odd grafitti but usually just on the wine bar wall or financial advisers office front probably because some odd kid doesnt like high profilers.
i was disappointed to find however that you go up into fulwood (supposedly an even better area than ranmoor) and you have chav kids hangin outside the co-op. WHY? Because Fulwood village is a little village area where they can hang out.
Not a line of shops on a Main Road with no where/place to sit like Ranmoor.
The same applies in Stannington - like Fulwood there are areas where the kids can hang out.
Conclusion? - move to ranmoor where you dont see chav kids 'largin it' . they're not a threat in ranmoor. up the rd at nethergreen they may start to appear at tesco and as i say do hang out in fulwood but stay in ranmoor and your in a practically CHAV FREE ZONE!! pubs/chippy/restaurants/take away - no trackies present!
Hope this is of help.
cornerstone 21-07-2005, 21:19 Try Norfolk Park - I live at the bottom end (Stafford Road / Norfolk Road area) and its great. We have a few kids playing in the wildlife garden from time to time...and you see them walk home from skool. But other than that they seem to be locked away in an evening...

Yes but Stocksbridge isn't really in Sheffield, although it is a surprise result. It does have other things against it such as social deprivation, distance from the city centre, etc.
Stocksbridge!!!.......no chavs that is a surprise!
I live at Wadsley Bridge.....very close to hillsbourgh and have easy access to town. You should take a look at the private estates around there, for example Binsted is a excellent estate far from the chav community as the estate has a very up market feel but on a low budget considering what’s on offer.
If u research into estates such as Binsted and a lot of others estates that are on the S6/S5 boarder line you'll find they have a great atmosphere, and are far from chav populated as the people who live there don’t put up with the behaviour associated with chavs.
You can’t rule out this type of behaviour anywhere in Sheffield but looking towards the small more private estates that are usually unseen in many areas seems to be the best bet.
Stocksbridge (S36) cannot beat it - lived there 40plus years - would not move anywhere else:clap:

Don't they drive knackered old beamers and have offensive avatars? ;) Tee Hee Hee
SpiderPete 23-07-2005, 19:04 The safest place to avoid chavs are :
1 Pubs (mainly cause they are not old enough)
2 Any restaurant (they only prefer junk food - McDonalds)
3 Work place (they dont know the meaning of the word work

Erm, excuse me.. But since when are there chavs in Stannington.. I'm from Stannington (brought up in lower Walkley though) and I resemble that remark..
Granted the Liberty estate and the Hall Park estate collectively house the odd chav but that's only cos the bloody silly Council decided to import them up here from the Wybourn.. :loopy:
