20 months is too young to breed from a husky bitch... please let her another year to mature.

You shouldn't breed under two years anyway but preferably no earlier than 3 years. 20 months is just too young. She hasn't fully matured yet.

I also assume (my apologies if I'm incorrect) that at 20 months she won't yet have had her hips scored or other vital health tests for her breed (sorry I do not know which health tests a husky should have) and you make no point of advertising for a hip scored and health tested stud?

I'm not about to tell anyone not to breed, but at least take care to do it properly. Health tests and correct age are so important!

sorry for the confusion! what i meant was that there are perfectly healthy huskys out there that for some reason or another dont have papers. therefore i dont want them to feel they cant post here but would like to chat to them anyway.

i understand age wise and think i will leave her another year, just want her to have experienced it :(

thanks for the advice

Hi Kruella,

I would go more by age than heats. They only really physically mature at around 2 years of age but emotionally, they tend to be ready around 3 years - some as late as 4.

Do be aware though, if you only want 'her to experience it' - dogs don't miss what they never had. She won't miss out for not having experienced it but there are serious risks involved with breeding - to both mum and pups and many bitches don't make good first time mums. To them, it can all be very confusing, even distressing and some don't take to it at all - which then means it falls to the owner to hand rear the puppies.

So if it's just because you feel she should have the experience once, don't be fooled that it's something she needs. It really isn't :)

Thanks for taking the advice as is intended :)

oh yea I totally understand and I know she wont miss whats shes never had, she is just such a brilliant dog and really healthy and I think she would have some really good pups.
I am planning to then have her spayed afterwards.
I have done quite a bit of research and fully aware and prepared for what i may need to do to help her and the pups. She means the world to me and I wouldnt want to put her in any unneccessary risk
