View Full Version : Star Trek's Scotty dies aged 85 Jon 20-07-2005, 17:42 Actor James Doohan, who played the chief engineer Montgomery Scott in Star Trek, has died at the age of 85. SpiderPete 20-07-2005, 19:11 Yes I have just read this, very sad. I liked the Scotty character alot. Full story here (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,163092,00.html) RIP HotPhil 20-07-2005, 19:19 A sad day indeed. Mr Purple 20-07-2005, 19:22 he has been beamed up for the final time... -Mr Purple [bad pun - sad day] uncleheed 20-07-2005, 19:38 Didnt like Star Trek, but R.I.P anyway Lestat 20-07-2005, 19:38 RIP - James. I remember watching the old Star Trek as a kid and it was a major part of my Sunday's! his distinctive voice will forever be associated with Scotty. H.P 20-07-2005, 21:11 Heghlu'meH QaQ jajvam ... R.I.P really sad news. may you find honor in death.. nick2 21-07-2005, 08:15 He played a great character, I base my own job estimates on the Scotty method, over exadggerate wildly then finish the job in half the time you quote, thus looking like you've saved the day. "I canny make SQL go any faster captain." Carmine 21-07-2005, 09:19 James Doohan will be sadly missed...one of the oldest stars in the Star Trek universe has blinked out. I was never as big a fan of TOS as I was of the NTG era series, but Relics was always one of my favourite episodes. The sight of Scotty lecturing Geordie La Forge on the demands of Starfleet captains and generally getting under his feet was one of the best moments of the series. Sultana 21-07-2005, 09:54 I was sad to hear this, but he will never be forgotten as long as we all say things like "I canna hold her captain - she's gonna blow" (that sounds a bit dodgy, but for anyone who doesn't realise - he was referring to The Enterprise) "Beam me up Scotty" although technically was never said, should be put in the dictionary! nick2 21-07-2005, 10:09 The fact that they needed an engineer in almost every episode of every Star Trek does raise the question "why do they make such shoddy, flimsy, unreliable spaceships in the future ?" Carmine 21-07-2005, 10:34 Originally posted by nick2 The fact that they needed an engineer in almost every episode of every Star Trek does raise the question "why do they make such shoddy, flimsy, unreliable spaceships in the future ?" The thing that always bothered me was that no matter what incarnation of the Enterprise you were dealing with, whenever it came to a scrap they always sat there and let the opposition take potshots at them before firing a few limp-wristed phaser shots and then noting that they'd done next to no damage whilst the other ship had nackered their shields and nearly wiped them out! I watched the whole of Nemesis screaming at Worf to keep firing at the bloody Remans and stop giving out long-winded reports on the damage the ship had sustained!:help: nick2 21-07-2005, 10:46 Voyager almost always drops to bits at the fist hit from anything bigger than a golf ball. Tons of sparks and random junk falls out of the roof togther with some bits of hose with steam coming out of them and all the lights flicker. Invariably some major system packs-up and the static warp bubble holding Janeways hair in place colapses so she looks like she has been dragged through a hedge backwards. This happens every episode, the whole ship must permanently smell of wet paint, polyfilla and singed eyebrows. How they managed to get home is a complete mystery to me. No wonder Kes jumped ship as soon as she got the chance, I'd rather disolve into a random blob of atoms that be involved in another prang in Voyager. Compared to the Enterprise D, Voyager was tough as nails! No more than two shots from a Ferengi waterpistol and the shileds were down to 15%, the warp core was on the verge of exploding and Riker's gut was shaking like a mountain of suet pudding! nick2 21-07-2005, 10:59 Originally posted by Carmine Compared to the Enterprise D, Voyager was tough as nails! There was an episode where some stella core fragment (WTF ?) was heading for some planet and Data said "we need something massive in it's way to deflect it", we sat shouting "throw Ryker at it !". ROTFL!:D :D :D I once sat down and set in concrete my defenition of Riker: "A pidgoen-chested tw*t with a sh*t-eating grin." Carmine 21-07-2005, 11:11 Goodness!!! A friend just emailed me on this subject and told me that James Doohan had his last child at the age of 80...now there's a great feat on engineering if I ever saw one! nick2 21-07-2005, 11:12 Full power to structural integrity I bet. Carmine 21-07-2005, 11:13 Originally posted by nick2 Full power to structural integrity I bet. "I'll get her going Captain; even if I have to get out and push!" Jon 21-07-2005, 11:32 "A chimpazee and two trainees could run her." -- Scotty, "Thank you. I'll try not to take that personally." -- Kirk, Star Trek III: The Search For Spock nick2 21-07-2005, 12:33 "I know every inch of this ship like the back of my hand", then he walks round the corner and knocks hiself out on a pipe. Carmine 21-07-2005, 15:07 Scotty: You told the Captain this would take three hours, but how long will it really take? Geordie: Three hours. Scotty: Laddie, you've a lot to learn about being a starship engineer! lucyjuicy 22-07-2005, 06:18 Originally posted by Jon Actor James Doohan, who played the chief engineer Montgomery Scott in Star Trek, has died at the age of 85. even though i didnt know him.. but may he rest in peace Lickszz 25-07-2005, 22:02 Never really a Star Trek fan but, Beam him up, captain! RIP coopster1974 26-07-2005, 07:53 One thing that really irked me in ST2 was when the engineering trainee died. What the film didnt mention was that it was Scotty's nephew. Had to read the book to find out why he was so upset. Watched the film again and saw it in a whole new light. RIP Scotty. |
