View Full Version : Celtic in 4 million bid for Kilgallon
CorkerSWFC 11-08-2009, 10:02 Ive just been reading tht Celtic of all team's have tabled a 4 million pound plus bid for Matthew Kilgallon.
That might be a hard one for Kilgallon to refuse in all fairness if it's true that is.
I dont think he will be tempted to sweaty sock land where only two teams will ever win the league. Its a division where most championship teams could beat anyone in that league. Yes you play in Europe and get knocked out very early on. If I was Killa I would wait for a premiership team to come and make an offer

You fogot about the probable 30 grand a week they would be able to pay him though.
Money talks......

He would be able to get that with a premiership club. I think he has more ambition than to go to Scotland, where he will only get seriously tested 4 games in a season

If this rumour is true, I suspect the lure of the Champions League / Europa League would have more to do with any real desire to move.

You call 2 matches a season in Europe "Regular European football " ?
Or is playing in Scotland considered European to you, seeing as its playing outside of England :hihi:
Mind you be nice for him if he transfered before September.
Benfica to play Celtic September 2nd at BMO Field
There is no official press release as of yet but due to the fact that both clubs have a number of days off in a row, Benfica and Celtic will come together in a clash at BMO Field on Wednesday September 2nd.
I'm sure the game will be yet another outstanding display in a long, illustrious displays of 'friendly' matches that have so far graced BMO Field.
According to ticketmaster, the ticket prices will be between $51.50 and $151.50 and they go on sale from 11am eastern this Friday, August 14th.

Celtic play a lot more than twice a year in Europe. They've been in the Champions League group stages for the last 3 seasons, playing against teams such as AC Milan and Barcelona in the process, and although they're unlikely to be in it this season unless they can beat Arsenal they'll still be in the UEFA Cup, or Europa League as it's called now.
Scotland may be a two horse title race, but he'd still have a 50/50 chance of a league title every year, plus two shots at domestic cups which they have a strong chance of winning, and he'd be playing in front of 50-60k every other week for one of the most famous clubs in the world.
Let's face it, he's not going to get that kind of career success by staying in the Championship or for a lower Premier League club, is he?

I largely agree with this and another point is that Kilgallon doesn't have to move to Parkhead and stay there for the rest of his footballing career. He could move for 3 years and he'd still only be 28 when he left, so have time to make a move to the Prem (as long as he did well at Celtic).
The experience of playing for Celtic for 3 years would be more appealing to me than moving to a lower league Prem side although there are obviously drawbacks to both moves. I think a lot will depend on who else is in the race for his signature though.
canadablade 11-08-2009, 12:59 Do Celtic have £4 Million to splash out on Kilgallon ?
The demise of Setanta has hurt Scottish clubs financially and thats why you are seeing Celtic come to Toronto,Canada for a mid season friendly.
Be shocked if he did end up at Celtic myself
scoobydotcom 11-08-2009, 13:02 With Celtic being one of the best supported clubs in the world im sure they have enough money for Killgallon!!! And I can't see why he would stay at SUFC rather than go to Celtic? He has rhe choice of Guarenteed European football, challenging for title every year, higher wages and playing for a massive team with a great history - for me its a no brainer
LADYBIRDS 11-08-2009, 13:05 "IF" the rumour is true, a player who is in his last year of contract, refusing to sign a new contract at present. A £4m plus offer has to be taken seriously.
We all would like to keep Killa, but some offers are too good to turn down.
"IF" this were to happen, a major rebuild of our defence is urgently required, on the plus side has any other Championship side been able to attract £14m plus for three players at a total cost of £2m. Money talks some times with silly £, agents and short contracts one has to bite the bullet and accept ones fate.:(

I bloody love Canada. Lived in Edmonton for 6 months as a kid and travelled to some great little towns. Even met a Sheffield in Jasper (tiny town) who recognised by Dad's accent. Would love to live there, but I couldn't knowing I wouldn't be able to see Wednesday each week.
Anyway,I think selling Kilgallon would be a really tough decision. £4m for a player in the last year of contract is a decent fee and keeping him you're risking losing him for nowt. But selling him, you're losing a good defender, which is why United are so hard to break down. I wouldn't like to make that decision.(well I would, I'd give him to Celtic for free :hihi:)
hurstyowl 11-08-2009, 13:44 blades have a good chance of getting promoted, its one of those gambles, keep killgallon in the hope you get promoted (as im sure he would have a big part to play in your bid for promotion) then he would probably sign a new contract. But if you fail for promotion he would go for nothing. i think id rather keep him and have a better chance of promotion.

Is that where Andy Taylor comes in to the picture?
Still on the Canada theme a Sheffield girl was one of the guides on a whale watching trip we went on, its a small world.

4 million for killa- hhmmm- im not sure what to think about this- its a very decent bid but unless we already have someone specific in mind to replace him with a deal agreed then id tell them to go get stuffed.

Me too as although I think 4 mil is an excellent figure for Kilgallon because it's the last year of his contract (i'd want more if he had 2-3 years left), his loss would be massive.
Unless he is kicking and screaming that he wants to go we should keep him and gamble the money on getting to the Prem and the £60 mil or so we get for promotion. In effect we would only be 'making' 1 or 2 mil on Killa anyway as we would need to spend big on a replacement who is close to his calibre - not worth it at all and surely we don't need the cash now the 2 Kyle's have gone?
NERVY-OWL 11-08-2009, 21:22 i'd say it worth trying to keep him and risk losing him for nothing. i do think it will be a big pull for him though so it wouldn't surrprise me if he does try to get a move, say what you like about the scottish league but they will be able to pay a decent wage and playing in front of crowds like theirs and for such a big club is bound to turn his head i would think.
however i would be surprised if they can even afford the fee anyway
