View Full Version : Leaving matches early..
I can never understand why people who have paid a lot of money to attend a football match then proceed to leave the stadium 5mins before the game has finished.
Ok, if your 5-0 down and playing poorly, fair shout but at yesterdays Owls v Barnsley game with the match poised at 2-2 Barnsley having the better of the 2nd half and either team still capable of winning people were drifting away.
At £28 a ticket in the south stand I find it bizarre.
Its like walking out of "Jaws" before he kills the shark.
Paul2412 09-08-2009, 09:01 There are 3 guys (dad and 2 sons) who sit near us on the kop. Every match without fail they will leave long before the end. I think the earliest I've seen them leave is 65 minutes, and the latest 84 minutes.
Really can't understand what is so important that can't wait another 10 minutes!
I really cannot understand it. Its not as if football matches are a cheap activity these days.
tallanddopey 09-08-2009, 09:17 leaving matches early is at epidemic proportions down at the lane. i dont understand it myself, ok if your teams losing and isnt improving maybe then. but people have been leaving when we were winning. the only games that people stayed were the play off semi, and a few tense games.
I think its just that people are impatiant and dont want to sit in a que of traffic. that is easily remidied though. catch the bus.
Funky_Gibbon 09-08-2009, 09:31 I think its just that people are impatiant and dont want to sit in a que of traffic. that is easily remidied though. catch the bus.
That's precisely why people leave before the end of the game. There's a 53 bus that comes a few minutes before the end of the game. Catching that is the difference between getting home at a reasonable time and having to wait for an hour plus after the game before you can even get on the bus outside the ground because of the congestion after the game.
Longest time I ever had to wait for a bus after the game was 2 hours. If people miss the last 5 minutes, so what? It's their decision and better 5 minutes than an hour plus.
Depends how well were playing and if I'm getting a lift back afetrwards. Invariably if I'm getting a lift or were playing ****e then I have to go with what the driver says and end up leaving around the 87-88 min mark but if its back to a pub then I'll stay untill the end, wait the traffic out and get a cab onwards.
Earliest I've left was at half time away at Leicester about 9 -10 years back and were three nil down if I remeber correctly, watched the second half scores on Sky Sports from a pub round the corner and one by one during the second half most of our coach arrived leaving about a dozen out of the 50 odd watching till the bitter end .
Paul Blade 09-08-2009, 09:46 I admit I leave before the end of the game. I leave when the 4th official puts up the board as if I stop till the end I am stuck for at least 30 mins because of pedestrians
Before people generalize not everyone can catch a bus straight away and I have to catch 2 to Stannington so its 15 mins by car or 1 1/2 - 2 hours on bus no brainer really
I never leave the Lane early, but its only a 15 minute walk home for me
I wish I had left at half time yesterday !
Plain Talker 09-08-2009, 10:03 I tend to leave a shade early,( about 5 or so mins) as I have to make my way past the away end, and would rather not plough my way through the hordes of away fans and coaches that I have to get past on my way home.
I noticed a lot of people on the kop doing it yesterday in the background on Sky Sports when there was still 5 minutes of normal time left and you were still playing for a win. The same thing happens at the lane all the time, and obviously if you know that you're going to lose it happens more. I've only ever left early when I had to somewhere to go, Harrogate if I remember rightly and had to leave ten minutes before the end.
I don't actually have a problem with people leaving if they want to, if they have somewhere to go that's up to them, doesn't make them less of a fan in my eyes, but I do find it annoying when you have to keep standing up and you keep missing bits of the match.
doubletop 09-08-2009, 10:23 probably don't want to Que in the boozer aswell?
sham.69er 09-08-2009, 10:56 sometimes i feel like leaving before the game as even started coz i know what coming :hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi:

That's daft, bet you could have walked it in that time.
Paul2412 09-08-2009, 16:36 I understand peoples reasoning's (well, the ones given here are perfectly reasonable) but I'm pretty sure that it can't be doing the team any good seeing streams of fans leaving early.
Yesterday, I was embarrassed that with 10 minutes to and drawing 2-2 hundreds of fans were pouring out. Quite rightly, the Barnsley fans loved it with the usual "we can see you sneaking out" chant. Just makes the fans look like they don't give a toss what happens.
only time I leave early is if I've taken my little girl, because of the idiots who like to push people over and stampeed onto the tram like its the last tram ever from leppings lane!!!
CorkerSWFC 09-08-2009, 17:58 It's very rare for me to go out until ive clapped the player's off unless were getting seriously dealt with lol.
Nice applause for Bobby Yesterday, and the atmosphere at Hillsborough to be fair was electric all the game.
NERVY-OWL 09-08-2009, 18:06 to be fair everyone has their own reasons for leaving early and i wouldn't judge them for doing it. i personally leave about 2 minutes before the whistle just to avoid trying to get onto the gangways when everyone else is. the only exeption to that is if we are looking like being capable of getting another or i am bang next to the gangway
A bit like Paul, we wait until the board goes up for the added time, and we try and time it to start walking down the gangway about 30 seconds before the end, so we usually are just at the bottom as the whistle goes... if we're a bit early, we'll usually watch the last moments on the tv's in the concourse on JSS. Saves a lot of hassle getting away.
I can only remember missing one goal, Deano's late equaliser against WBA, must've been late 80s or early 90s.
The annoying thing at the Lane is the stewards allowing fans to stop at the top of the gangways and block the exits, as people stop there and watch the game, while others are trying to get out.

not just the lane matey, happens all the time at hillsborough.

Off-topic but am I the only one (apart from my brother) who hates the 'minutes clapping' that we have to do now? Perhaps I'm a traditionalist but I think that a minutes silence is much more respectful. This clapping thing was only brought in to drown out the very occasional idiot who thought it was funny to shout out during the silence.

no your not. i prefer a minutes silence but it seems to be the norm nowadays.

OMG, the shark dies at the end???!!! You've completely spoiled it for me now, I had no idea. I've always left the cinema early to get out of the car park quicker, and when I've watched it on DVD I've always turned it off 5 minutes before the end so that I can get to the kettle a few minutes earlier.
But seriously, I can't understand why so many people pay so much money to watch a game and then walk out without knowing how the game ends. I never leave early, in fact in nearly 29 years of going I've only ever left before the end of a game 3 times (0-5 v Everton in the mid 80s, and that was only because my dad was fed up and dragged me out, 0-2 at the sty in 1991, and losing 1-4 to Wrexham in the league cup a few years ago), even then it was deep into injury time and I wasn't missing the 10 minutes of play that some people usually do.
My mate was a cracking example, in a pre-season friendly against Everton a few years ago he left early with the score at 1-3. Final score...3-6 :D
canadablade 10-08-2009, 12:13 the Blades leave early to get a good spot at the boozer being the p*ssheads that they are ;)

I third that sentiment, chaps, and, yes, it's a damn shame that, no matter what, you always find some idiot who cant resist shooting his mouth off, and be quiet and respectful during a minutes' silence.
It's sixty seconds, FGS:- is it so hard to be quiet for just sixty seconds, when you've the whole of the rest of the game, to make as much racket as you please, cheering your team on!
Left early once 0-7 to Middlesbrough, missed their 8th.
fact: leave ground at 86mins
fact: get to front of bar
fact: saves a 20min Q..
:D

Thought i'd resurrect this thread after the terrific nailbiting game against Huddersfield, yes people were still leaving early, totally and utterly bizarre.
hurstyowl 19-12-2011, 23:29 i rarely leave early. if i always did i would have missed out on some great moments. brunts last minute wonder volley vs the dingles to win 2-1. or mark crossley comin up for the corner to score the equaliser in the last minute vs southampton after being 3-1 down. there are obviously times when you concede late but still
I'm a Barnsley fan. I remember in the 90s, Barnsley 6 Huddersfield 0 at half time. I've never seen an away end empty so fast!

Not everyone walking down the stairs is leaving. My brother and I always walk down from our seats with a few minutes of the game to go and stand near one of the exits to watch the rest of the game. We do this so we can get out of the ground as quickly as possible when the game has ended and either catch our bus (if comes at almost the same time as the match usually ends) or get near the front of our bus queue if we've missed it.
Although admittedly I did leave after Hudderfield equalised so I missed the nailbiting last 10 seconds of the game. I don't think I'd have noticed anything though, I was too busy swearing in frustration. :D
I leave early every game, Don't know why tbh but its summat i have done ever since i've been going, I go with my o/h dad and he has always done it, I know your missing bits of the game but its only 5 minutes and the difference between getting away from the ground quickly and sitting in traffic forever is crazy.
Stockers 20-12-2011, 08:46 rarely leave before the end and stay in my season until the final whistle (at the moment).
Last season and the season before there were plenty of matches which i left just after half time to get some more ale in, the cardiff match (4-3 to them) i missed 5 of the goals cos i went in late and left early, plenty of matches when i just lose interested and would rather stay in a nice warm ale house, you'd be surprised how many do it (well Blades fans anyway!!)
Not been mentioned yet, but do you think season ticket holders find it easier to leave early than those who have just parted with real cash?

Should have been at Hillsbro for the last 10 years mate the boozers were always busy 10 minutes before the end and rightly so ......

Don't you think season ticket holders part with real cash?.
A bit of a strange question that one mate.
I never leave early although sometimes I wonder why I went in the first place.

Not really strange I see where hes coming from ....... when you pay up front for a season ticket you dont feel the economic sways of your personal finance through a season ..... If you pay weekly its a conscious decision every Thursday Friday as to whether to part with your cash so emotionally its a completely different rational
DerbyTup 20-12-2011, 13:46 I'm a season ticket holder and I never leave early.
I think that's nothing to do with it.
I arrive late though sometimes - but never after the kick off.
I think some of those who leave early do so because they are making some kind of protest at the football. This is a particular problem when the footy is bad. Doesn't apply to our Sheffield teams right now eh?
I think there's then another group of early leavers who are thinking about dodging the traffic or catching a bus. They either don't like getting caught up in crowds or queuing - or they lead extremely busy lives!
But the biggest group of early leavers are those that booze before during and after the game. They leave early to have a pee on the way out before heading to the pub for a top-up.
Where do people park and what matches do they attend to be "stuck in traffic for hours", the last time this happened to me was when Man Utd came to Hillsborough about 10-11yrs ago.
I leave the ground when the match has finished walk a 10min journey to the car and get away no problem.

Same here, I park about 150 yards away from the Lane on my pals drive, a couple of minutes walk to the car and 15-20 minutes later I am in my house being accused of lieing and not going to the match by the warriors on here.:hihi::hihi:....
CorkerSWFC 20-12-2011, 14:06 It's all about timing, i just make sure I stand near one of the exits with about 30 seconds to go, but Saturday I was stood there an extra 2 minutes and got shifted lolol
For us Owls at the moment I think the team must be leaving the ground early :-)

I hope the owls at Walsall didn't find it easy to leave the game early today.

like the old days mate...scrapping on the terraces....mind you their heroes were slapping old men with kids after game....
hillsborough might be interesting for them...naughty naughty
Stan Tamudo 27-12-2011, 11:20 I don't leave games early but today poses another problem, I have been known to skip the short walk from London Road to The Lane due to beng chained to a barstool when the game is on the goggler and the ale is tasting good.
