renting a flat at the minute which is 525 a month, too much for dead money so its either a spare room somewhere or take the plunge, they seem to get snapped up quite easily so if i ever had to move i could let or sell, i'm thinking that even thoguh it would be expensive, it would be an investment and i'd get back what i put in - if i get a spare room somewhere i'm still paying dead money and have to live with strangers, anyone know how much the repayments would be for a flat there?

Go talk to an independant financial advisor mate, mortgage repayments vary so much and depend on so many factors.

Would recommend Samantha Knight at Independant Mortgage Services (Chesterfield Rd, Sheffield). She doesn't charge you for her services (if you take a mortgage, the lender covers her fees) and she'll travel to meet you. I've dealt with her for years and she's 100% trustworthy and gives really good advice.

Good luck !

go on line to an estate agents website (foxtons.co.uk) and look at the mortage calculator and get rough figures.

u got to remember on top of mortage u got insurance, lot more bills etc. does work out quite a lot on top so dont overlook that.

Hi,

I was looking at buying a flat in West One, and as nice as they are, they are very expensive. Your looking at around £100k just for a Studio apartment (no seperate bedroom)!

I also happen to know that it is more difficult to get a mortgage on a building which is more than 6 storeys high (im not sure why this is, some lenders are awkward)

I think that West One could be a good investment, but it would be much easier to get a good return on them if bought off plan. There are some new off plan developments coming up in sheffield, why not get some info, from an investment point of view it would be much better.

As nice as West One flats may be i think you can get better for the money and a bigger place, which is easier to get back on. I think once other developments have been built West One might loose some of its desirability because there will be a new block and then be the same as other apartment blocks in the centre.

West One is the only development in town with any imagination, the others that have sprung-up like MDF mushrooms are merely large concrete boxes with no character or style.

I recon West One with it's attempt to be a "community" will continue to be popular and still full when the bubble has burst and people can't shift the other "apartments" for love or money.

There is a new apartment block on the cards, eclipse, which seem to be quite nice. I do agree and west one has imagination etc and they are lovely to live, just rediciously priced.

Unfortunately they aren't suitable for me because they are too noisy on weekends and this is no good unless your the one making the noise!! lol.

Lisa, it looks increasingly likely that Eclipse will be cancelled.

I agree, there is still no sign of any activity on site, and a "for sale" sign has appeared.

Mortgage lender dont like lending above 4 floor's, unless it's a prestigious development. As they would put it its their security!

As with owning a house you need to budget not just for mortgage and relevent insurances and household bills and i would imagine west one like ward site (where i use to live) charges a service/management fee.

Problem is selling the apartments in Sheffield. There are, in my opinion just too many. It took a year to sell mine and they we had to trade it. Though in fairness a certain local estate agent valued our apartment really high and like a fool we bit the carrott. You can only learn from your mistakes...get more than one opinion! I worked for the company at the time, so thought they would be fair!

Good luck and will the mod's let me recommend you pm me for mortgage advice?!?
