Which was the first competitive Sheffield derby that you actually attended?

I started going to Hillsborough aged 8 in the 1980-81 season so sadly just missed witnessing the Boxing Day Massacre or our League Cup win earlier that season. The first derby that I went to wasn't until more than 8 years later and was the Zenith Data Systems game in 1989.

So overall, in my time I've seen 21 Sheffield derbies (not including friendlies or testimonials), and seen Wednesday win 8 times, United 6, with 7 drawn. Not a bad record really.

First one i remember was our promotion season in 1970-71

Blades 3 owls 2 -- King Tudor
owls 0 Blades 0

Went to them both, thats my first recollection of the derby matches but the old man could have taken me as an even younger kid and I dont remember

Mine was not long ago, it was the game after the 2 Wednesday fans were killed in a car crash near Coventry.

The lasting memory of that game was how well the United fans observed the minutes silence and holding up banners of respect.

I always thought mine was Boxing Day but now I'm not sure, weren't the League Cup two legged games the season after?

I can't remember much about it 4 months old taken by my dad
but my next one was both games 61-62 1-0 at home and 1-2 away been to most since then

BTW have you noticed WE don't have a party every year after the 7-3 win in 51 :hihi::hihi::hihi:

Yeah, they were the following season. My original post might have been misleading, when I said "earlier that season" I meant in 1980-81 the season I started going, not earlier in the Boxing Day season.

My first visit to the sty was in 1991, for the "Woods game". We'd been superior for so long that the thought of actually losing the game never crossed our minds, but as we all now know the Sheffield derby doesn't work like that!

1991 at the Lane, as we were struggling and had just sold Agana to that huge club Notts County (!!) - don't think hardly anyone gave us a prayer, but one of the most one-sided derbies i've seen - highlights being Warhurst and Sheridan running into each other prior to the first goal, and Woods attempt at goalkeeping on Deano's clincher :)

Very much the opposite of last season, when the (on paper) superior Owls side of 91-2 were beaten by a hardworking United side, and last year the hardworking Owls beat an (on paper) superior blades side.

I remember mine, 3rd October 1970 at Bramall Lane, losing 3-2 to United with Tudor putting the winner through Peter Grummits legs. It cost 3/- shilling (15pence) for juveniles, I remember that because my dad took me and my younger brother(I was 9 he was 8 ), dad gave him the entrance money for both of us, or so I thought, but he had only given him enough for him to get in, so I'm there pushing at the turnstile and this voice says 'thas not paid kid', purely by chance a slightly older cousin of mine was immediately behind me in the queue and paid the 3 bob ....RIP Neil

Boxing day 79 for me.I don't think there was a derby game for a number of years before then.I was 15 at the time and United had been the bigger club for a number of years. The significance of Boxing day was it signalled the change in power and we once again became the bigger, better club.

My first visit to the lane was the same season with the Curran goal.I also went to both cup games the following season. My mate got knocked down by a car outside Kennings on the way to the lane and we sent him home while we went to the match. His mother went barmy with us afterwards.

Early in 1967/68 season at the Lane - 1-0 to t'Owls - John Ritchie header that hit the underside of the bar and just crossed the line if my memory serves.

That game was my first Sheffield derby as well! .. me and my Dad stood on the old west terrace on John Street.

I seem to remember United were 2-0 up at half-time through (I think) Dearden and Colquhoun, but in the second half Wednesday came back to level the scores with goals from (I think again) Sinclair and Sissons. United then brought on John Tudor as sub and as you say he scored the winner, the ball going right through Peter Grummitts legs!

Went to the return as well at Hillsborough which I seem to remember was an Easter fixture and a 0-0 draw.

Boxing day 1979...Expected a close game and to be honest would have been happy with a draw as Blades were top i think and we were about 8th, how things changed after that! We went up and Blades ended up in old 4th division season after that.
