View Full Version : Virgin Active advice please!
I've been on thier web site to get an idea but it does not have any prices for membership or monthly costs.
Does anyone go to the sheffield one? How much is it? What are the classes like? Does it get very busy? What is the best thing? What is the worst thing?
Any advice wouldbe welcome! It's getting to the point now that I'm spending £32 a month on other classes/ booking courts/ swimming that I think I'll be better off joining a gym and having all the advantage of going roughly when I want.
Thanks!
Hi Evei
Virgin has 2 packages - one is £45 a month, or you can pay £40 a month but are committed for a year.
Plusses
The sauna / spa bit
Boxing gear (bags, pads etc)
Climbing Wall if thats your thing
Lots of machines
Downers
Can get very busy
I was a member until last month but I only quit cos I moved from your end of town to Hillsboro and it seemed daft going 5 miles across town to to the gym.
There are a lot more people there now then when I started and that really is the only bad thing (apart from the price) about it. Weeknights can be VERY busy.
Don't know what the classes are like but Tai Chi is supposed to be very good.
Hope this helps!
Saifa
Thanks
I have noticed it is very busy in the car park during weeknights as I cycle past occasionally. Due to the holidays coming up I will have loads of spare time in the day as well as at night so I might give it a go.
I'm much more interested in the classes than the gym part, though it might be somethng I can get myself into!
Any more details about what the classes are like would be very good!
Hi - I've been a member of the Virgin gym for about 3 months now, and have to say it is just fantastic (and no, I don't have shares in the company!) There's a huge range of classes and I've never had any problems getting on them, and although Mon and Tue night around 6-7.30 can be quite busy, there's no probs the rest of the week - I can always manage to get on all the machines without having to wait. I think it's all the guilt-wrecked people that have manic weekends and want to burn off those calories early on in the week!
I still find it highly ironic that when Virgin Active was launched, it aimed to stick two fingers up to the whole 12 month contract idea and hence said you could stop your contract at any time. When this 12 month thing was launched, they offered existing members the chance to transfer to it, but they had to pay a £25 transfer fee. I think new members had to pay a £50 activation fee. Where does all this money go, has anything new been added to the club since it opened?? Someone at Virgin is making a lot of money out of everyone!!! It's not just Virgin, Fitness First offered me a no joining fee offer, yet if I wanted to join I would have to pay a £35 admin charge!!

I'm not the running type,
1) I hate how cars slow down or beep (silly men!)
2) It is really boring
3) My hips don't like it!
I already excerise 6 times a week but it costs a fair bit. I cycle twice a week (only in summer) but I'm really not keen on the traffic in sheffield, I swim twice a week, badminton, aerobics classes/ body pump just wondering if it is actually cheaper in the long run to join a gym!
I easily spend a £10 a week, running would be a good idea if I had the confidence to do it!
It's interesting to see that virgin have a £40 fee. I might just join the council run one first to see if I like it as It's cheaper and I can do the day one as I'm on holiday for a month now.
teddygirl 26-07-2005, 17:18 Corr you do quite a bit then!
hope you get sorted soon
Fitness Unlimited is only costing me 21.99 per month.
I use it for swimming, yoga, circuit training and body pump, all at Ponds Forge. Sometimes venture across town to Hillsborough Liesure centre, or once in a blue moon to Don Valley (out door running track).
Evei:
You are spot on about running, not that good for your joints, but if you do decide to do some, I'd recommend running around Derwent and Howden reservoirs (in the Peaks). Gorgeous scenery and lovely fresh air ... + no traffic!
I've been a member of virgin since it started and I'd highly recommend it. Having been a member of just about all of the gyms in sheffield I think its by far the best.
I just avoid monday nights 5-8 cos its the busiest time. Later on or other nights its fine. And friday and sunday nights you can almost have the gym to yourself.
Theres sooo many classes.. loads of interesting options.. the climbing wall.. a really well equiped MASSIVE gym.. and the spa is really good... well worth my £42 a month!
