Has anyone actually seen this and is it really a megalithic monument or just an unusual bit of rock of random origin?

Ecclesall Woods is of considerable archaeological and historic interest, and is recorded in a wealth of documentary sources. It is probably the most important woodland for archaeology in Sheffield. (South Yorkshire Archaeology Service, pers comm, 1999).

Most significant is a Bronze Age "cup and ring" stone, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

From: "Ecclesall Woods - Site Management Plan" (Sheffield City Council) which can be found here:

Well I live in Ecclesall too, just don't bang on about it all the time

I was wondering if anyone knew directions to it, though I noticed on that site they say it's best to carry a GPS to find it.

Neither do I - only when people confuse where it is, which is one of my pet hates.

Well, I live in Ecclesall, adjacent to the woods and walk there regularly. I have never heard of this monument, let alone seen it. The woods are so large though that you could walk there for a lifetime and never come across it.

I struggle to remember where the memorial is to the charcoal burner so I'm not really surprised that I've managed to miss this stone. It must be well off the beaten track as I'd never even heard of it and I'm sure I've been on nature rambles in the woods a few times in the past. It's probably near the foxes sett and I've only found that twice and both times by blind chanc, the woods are fairly extensive!!e

I was the OP under a different name. I got good instructions on finding the stone, but even so I looked for 1/2 hour and couldn't find it. I'll take another look using the instructions at http://pecsaetan.weebly.com/ecclesall-woods-1.html

Haha, you'll find the first one easily from my instructions, the second one is very much off limits for various reasons.

Megalithic,

I ventured into Ecclesall Woods yesterday afternoon and found the first cup & ring stone. Your directions were spot on - thank you.

I'd sure love to see the other one. Hope they are able to publicise the location real soon. I wonder how many more are lurking in the undergrowth?

Glad to help Anarchon.

Regarding the second stone, i can't give it's location i'm afraid, you'd have to take that up with SYAS.
I visited it 2 weeks back with John Gilpin, the discoverer and Jim McNeil from SYAS, a couple of friends tagged on too, you'd have been welcome to join us if i'd only known.

I've searched for this many times and never found it. It all adds to the mystery...
